Many poor white people too?

Nogoodnickname · 20/03/2020 00:00

My DH has been offered a job in Holland for a substantial amount of money a week. I’m really not happy about this at all but he sees it as a good opportunity. I’ve told him that if a lockdown happens in the U.K. he won’t be coming home and will be stuck in Holland. Just to add that I’m in the high risk category, so if he did go he’d have to isolate for two weeks elsewhere in the U.K. before he comes home to our house Hmm

istherelifeafter40 · 20/03/2020 00:01

Yes sure, but you can't argue that although the USA has many poor white people, there is definitely a race problem there. Slightly different here, maybe very different, but it's not like we are a colour-blind society.

AvocadoOwl · 20/03/2020 06:58

Was just saying to DD what happens if everyone at nuclear plants gets it and their is a mistake made-so that thing about the nuclear staff below as given me the willies...

After Chernobyl I'm pretty confident that nuclear power plants are fairly human error proof these days and presumably have watertight plans in place for this sort of stuff. You aren't going to have a power plant of infected people wandering round like zombies pressing buttons they shouldn't Grin

CrunchyCarrot · 20/03/2020 07:07

Morning everyone. Bringing the thread up.

gnomeisland · 20/03/2020 07:35

Vague and waffly.
Who's writing this stuff?

Gammeldragz · 20/03/2020 07:36

Love how that guidance says keeping kids home will limit the virus spread. I mean, we know that, but Brosi kept saying it wasn't about that and there was no evidence to support closing schools and we are only doing it because they can't staff them.

Bessica1970 · 20/03/2020 07:39

I thought that essential worker guidance was quite thorough!
They finish off but asking people to check with their employers to see if their job is essential which should cover any jobs that weren’t specified ( refuse collectors was one that sprang to mind).

Saucery · 20/03/2020 07:40

I’m really not doing the ‘my friend’s dog sitter’s second cousin’s teacher’s brother ‘ thing but I do know that our nearest nuclear processing plant has procedures as tight as fuck right now, with plenty of backup and split teams etc.

Lifesavesocialdistance · 20/03/2020 07:41

Maybe he's not mentioned lock down after what happened in Italy, and everyone fled South.
Disgusting whether spooned!

Matt Hancock now on TV, not reassuring at all. Totally stumbled and stuttered when saying, reducing spread and rising NHS equipment.

NOW HE SAYS LORRIES ARE TAKING PPE TO CARE HOMES, GPS AND HOSPITALS. we have the kit and we know there is demand for it.

Getting stuff out of storage is the bottle neck??

He's more worried about getting it out for need!!

Pathetic!!

The lorry should have gone weeks ago to get this!! Pathetic!

Lifesavesocialdistance · 20/03/2020 07:42

He gets the importance of this Confused

That's good. He does understand how important this is. Hmm

Lifesavesocialdistance · 20/03/2020 07:46

Arghhhhhhh!

He says test is what they want, it's how you get ahead of the virus!

No bloody shit!

LuxLFC · 20/03/2020 07:51

We are living an episode of Years & Years or Black Mirror. Crazy!

GlisteningBlob · 20/03/2020 07:56

Woke up to the news articles from Italy, utterly, utterly terrifying. Please everyone watch Sky News lead article today. This is what is coming to us in 10-14 days and everyone should be made to watch this, especially the Its just Flu and a cold brigade. Boris and Co must be aware of it so that the fuck are they doing? The whole country needs to be in lockdown NOW

CrunchyCarrot · 20/03/2020 08:03

Matt Hancock saying most people are obeying the guidance re social distancing and it's fine if we all keep 2 meters apart. Has he actually seen supermarket queues? Are people keeping 2 m apart in supermarkets? I don't think so. Hmm

This looks so organised from Dublin. A national stadium set up for drive through testing. I wonder if the UK has even started organising anything this? The film I've seen so far of the pilot drive through places here was woeful.

SunshineCake · 20/03/2020 08:14

And quite a few others - the COPD suffer in Birmingham sadly didnt sound like he had too much time left in him if he didnt get it.

That is not what his family said and a really horrible thing for the OP to post.

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 20/03/2020 08:14

Nuclear plants have a safety mechanism where it shuts itself down if there's a proper problem. The rods fall by gravity so it will always happen.

In nuclear engineering terms, the automatic shutdown of a nuclear reactor is called a reactor trip or scram . A reactor trip causes all the control rods to insert into the reactor core, and shut down the plant in a very short time (about three seconds). ... Inserting them all at the same time shuts down the reactor.

Horehound · 20/03/2020 08:50

@Lifesavesocialdistance I actually thought he was very aensible, calm and reassuring 🤷

Regarding keyworkers getting food from empty shops my suggestion is to get fruit, veg and staples delivered to schools so they can get free food and pick up their kids at the same time.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 20/03/2020 08:59

Is there a list of helpline links that people may need?

Like free school meals, universal credit fund for those who have been made redundant, self employed HMRC help?

Saucery · 20/03/2020 09:00

Some schools have fruit delivered for KS1. If the collaboration between supermarkets happens perhaps it could be extended to distribute staples through that method.

NapTrapped · 20/03/2020 09:03

Hello, new to this thread. I hope you don't mind me dropping in. I hadn't felt too bad so far as all of my friends seem to be following government advice at the moment but starting to get quite angry with family members.

My mum who is a #keyboardwarrior, who's making sure my gran is keeping to the advice and is sharing at least 5 posts a day from front line key workers deploring people so practice social distancing was at a local (tiny) restaurant last night, with my dad who took the week off from having a "bug". My dad is returning to work next week, around food stuffs!

In laws are visiting each other with baby in toe.

I'm getting frustrated that our family (my immediate family) are following government advice however people continuing as normal will really curb everyone else's efforts. It's not hard to stay at home!

NapTrapped · 20/03/2020 09:13

Apologies for the many typos, I hope my post makes sense. It's the rage! Grin
