Boris has already told people it all be over in 12 weeks.

The 12 weeks was what a journalist put to Boris, I don’t think he has ever said it’ll be all over in 12 weeks.

Asking the PM to predict when things will all be back to normal is utterly pointless!

Schools have been closed 'indefinitely', not just for 12 weeks, in which case we would be talking about going back after spring bank holiday. In fact the disease will be peaking at roundabout that time. People are hearing what they want to hear.

In defence of some of these elderly people is that they're living alone and some of them have very few visits. So there is a serious risk to the mental health of some of them. (My DM and MIL are in this boat.)

Yes, some of them aren't taking this seriously enough. But it's too simplistic to label them necessarily as selfish, the reality is more complex.

Have you read the imperial college paper? It sets out mitigation and suppression strategy. The "suppression" side of things is triggered by hospital capacity / deaths. If they are following that, which they seem to be, it will come and go. once the hospitals gain some control, they'll relax things and then be more strict once the hospital capacity is triggered.

Worth a read even if it is quite scary.

He shouldn't have said the 12 week thing. It is simply the tip of the peak and so naturally, after the peak things decline but that doesn't help persuade the stupid to take steps now. He is honestly, an awful leader for something as horrendous as this.

'FAMILIES have today been told to take their rubbish to the tip as bin collections will be cancelled during the coronavirus outbreak.
Councils across the country have scaled back household bin collections and people have been told take their own waste to the dump rather than wait for lorries.'

I've read several reports suggesting treatment needs to be given early for the best chance of success. Several drugs have shown promise. It's very worrying if people aren't getting prompt treatment. That could potentially free up a lot of ICU beds - and save lives.

Without these threads I'd question my sanity. Everyone - the UK government, our media, NHS official line, downplaying. Last time I spoke to my GP they insisted capacity would never be full, it was usually mild, "only elderly and severe health conditions". I don't know if they've been told to minimalise perhaps to calm patients. I find the downplaying and denial more anxiety provoking than anything else.

How short-termist is Boris? What does he think will happen when the penny drops for people. Now we're facing 12 months disruption. Had we acted sooner this wouldn't have been necessary.

'The move has infuriated residents - especially the elderly - who have no means of disposing of rubbish.
Eileen French, 75, said: “What are the elderly supposed to do?
“We have bins overflowing into the streets and no way of getting rid of it. I think it is disgraceful the council has made this announcement so soon into this crisis.
“Coronavirus raises all sorts of public health concerns and the council seems to be abdicating responsibility.”
Ellie Wood, from Brighton, said: “At times of stress it is up to the council to try and maintain basic services. Rubbish strewn across streets is a clear sign of civil breakdown.
“The council has a responsibility to maintain collections not just from a health and hygiene position but also to reassure residents that there won’t be some total deterioration of services.”
NO COLLECTIONS
Another resident said: “This the exact moment they should be going the extra mile, for all of us, including themselves. If refuse starts piling up in the streets, other diseases will spread, put extra strain on the NHS.
“The bin collectors will not escape these consequences either.”
A spokesman for Brighton and Hove Council said: “We will be unable to catch up on missed work. If a collection is missed, residents’ next collection will take place on their next scheduled collection day if possible.
“Residents can take any type of waste to the two Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRS). This can include taking friends and neighbours waste if they can’t get there by car.” '

This might cause riots.

Do the government realise how many people live in areas where little neighbourly sprit exists - plenty of people will not be able to get their neighbours to help in this way to that extent.

@fedup he tweeted this. It doesn't matter that he doesn't say it'll all better in 12 weeks. This 'we can turn the tide' is nonsense and belittles the situation.

People to take their rubbish to the tip. What about those who can't drive? That will include many elderly and disabled.

Speaking to my elderly relatives, I got the impression the ones not taking it seriously have absolute trust in the NHS. Many are also children of the WW2 generation. When things got serious during the war, there was no government "advice". Important measures were mandatory. The elderly might see lack of compulsory action as evidence things aren't that bad. They have a misplaced faith in the government. The believe we have it under control. The government is negligent and incompetent.
