Most do look over 70 from the pics.

I fear for italy - the ultra far right is surging and they the type to say it was migrant and non white italians who spread it.

How horrible! Why not allow them to stay for a period until they can find a new home? What if some of them have symptoms and need to self isolate? How can they look for a home in that circumstance?

MurrayTheMonk · 19/03/2020 22:48

Was just saying to DD what happens if everyone at nuclear plants gets it and their is a mistake made-so that thing about the nuclear staff below as given me the willies...

Youngatheart00 · 19/03/2020 22:50

@tryingtoprep I know. It’s been trending on Twitter. Apparently another hotel chain (MacDonald) have offered to put staff up.

I tell you what, a crisis doesn’t half show up the best and worst in humanity.

Youngatheart00 · 19/03/2020 22:50

The nuclear thing is worrying.

Angryrant55 · 19/03/2020 22:54

Thomas Penny - 'Wetherspoons are going ahead with a beer festival in their 13 pubs in Bristol next week, encouraging drinkers to go against the advice of the government and risk spreading #coronavirus.'

@Angryrant55 Your post on the far right has made me wonder whether (possibly subconscious?) racism is playing a role in our government's lack of action? London is already so badly hit and yet still no mandatory social distancing. The last census showed that many (around half?) in London are from non white British backgrounds. The majority of white Brits there are young and healthy. Could it be that the government sees the more vulnerable - migrants, elderly, disabled - as not important enough to save?

Angryrant55 · 19/03/2020 22:58

Not sure about the facts - in poorer inner london lots of white elderly whose family live out of london.
But i do think some element of racism is playing a part - they might not want to discourage fully the felling that non white people in london led to spreading nationwide.

Angryrant55 · 19/03/2020 23:02

But it could hit the Older Asian people in the uk exceptionally hard due to a higher rate of multi generation households -this being blamed in italy

In Italy do some priests decide that it's god will if they live or die and delay treatment to hope others get it.

No mention of any nuns dying - prehaps less nuns plus more isloated life and the fact men simply die more from it.

Youngatheart00 · 19/03/2020 23:03

Really?? Racism??? I don’t think it’s time to play that card.

And if anything at all, it’s upper middle class white people spreading it outside of London, fleeing to their second homes in the countryside or coast.

I have faith that the government is not institutionally racist. Please let’s not do this.

TheCanterburyWhales · 19/03/2020 23:05

Salvini is certainly trying to make political hay out of it all. Which shows what a vile piece of shit he really is.
And I was no fan of the Conte govt until 2-3 weeks ago, but jeez Louise I'm glad they've got my back now.

Angryrant55 · 19/03/2020 23:06

Which the goverment wants by not getting a grip last night on lockdown rumours till this morning.

All the papera today mentioned london lockdown coming.

@Deux just watched the C4 piece.
Absolutely terrifying and heart breaking.

tryingtoprep · 19/03/2020 23:14

Yes that's part of the reason it could be partly racism. The government knows the affluent in London will flee (as they have been doing). Still today, affluent people are more likely to be white. Not exclusively so of course. Which means many left behind in London will be non white including many migrants. Others left behind are elderly or disabled. All groups possibly seen as costly to the government. The government failing to act to mitigate the spread could be down to seeing these people's lives as less valuable. It's a mark of a civilised society how we treat the most vulnerable.

Yes those leaving London will spread it to other parts of the country but our government seems to act on short-term thinking.

Of course it's quite possibly nothing to do with racism or contempt for the vulnerable. It could well simply be complete and utter incompetence. Either way it's not good enough.

Angryrant55 · 19/03/2020 23:17

Suspect wealthy non white londoners are less likely to have a cornish holiday home as well.

Does anyone have any info on how Italian hospitals are coping with non covid19 issues? I'm pregnant and due in June when we're predicted to be at our worst. I'm genuinely terrified. My first baby was still born, I developed sepsis and went into toxic shock with my second, who was premature and was very touch and go with, and this was all without the NHS being on its knees. I'm genuinely terrified.

Angryrant55 · 19/03/2020 23:28

In bergamo they moved everything elsewhere.

I also think that this epidemic in Britain will have a colour. And so much even more in the States.

Angryrant55 · 19/03/2020 23:31

Well in the USA African Americans die on average younger than white people on average anyway.

Petiolaris · 19/03/2020 23:33

Omg Angryrant55 that is terrifying. Ditto the C4 news segment. I’m worried sick that I or my parents will end up like that.

mrshoho · 19/03/2020 23:34

I don't believe racism has anything at all to do with our governments approach to this situation.

PlantHerd · 19/03/2020 23:38

What's the C4 piece that has been mentioned recently?

I am an on and off lurker since the beginning and I can't thank you all enough for the regular posts.

istherelifeafter40 · 19/03/2020 23:39

I am not saying the government is governed by racist ideology in their choices, but that race is correlated with poverty, capacity to buy food ahead, lock down, access to information, etc and this will transpire in the epidemic. The government has certainly not been taking care of the poor - which in London would also mean people of colour. So it is racist in the structural sense.

defthand · 19/03/2020 23:40

On Chloroquine, there’s a suggestion that it’s effective because it’s a zinc ionosphore, that is it helps transport zinc directly into the cells, where that zinc blocks viral RNA replication.

If so, it’s possible Quercetin — another zinc ionosphore — may do the same thing. There are studies in Canada evaluating this now.

See: www.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=vE4_LsftNKM&app=desktop

Quercetin is a natural OTC product. I’ve bought some in case. Probably a Hail Mary but It’s good for immune function whatever, so not a lot to lose.
