I was wandering around the supermarket doing my weekly shop earlier and noticed all the pasta was gone but the shelves of pasta sauce / passatta/ pesto etc are still full, what the heck are people planning to do with their big stockpiles of plain pasta?

I apologise in advance because I realise this type of post has been done to dealth already

I could cheerfully never eat pasta again

bitheby · 09/03/2020 20:22

Can't be bothered to RTFT but am genuinely amazed that the OP doesn't know that you can make you own pasta sauce. You can even make it then freeze it. I know. It's a wonder of science.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/03/2020 21:36

My Sainsbury’s delivery came and they’ve substituted my spaghetti for QUICK COOK spaghetti

That stuff is FILTH pancakes

Porcupineinwaiting · 09/03/2020 21:38

Quick cook spaghetti? Is that for people who cant wait for the 8 min normal spaghetti takes to cook?

TroysMammy · 09/03/2020 21:45

I noticed pasta flour was sold out too. Are people really going to make their own? Or will it be another wasted purchase?

Frankiecandle · 09/03/2020 21:48

lol at the 'we never use jarred sauces' lot , typical MN.

Legoandloldolls · 09/03/2020 21:54

We eat 3kg in a normal week. It's a cheap meal with 4 kids. I was scared doing a normal weekly shop I'm going to get judged for stockpiling

Ninkanink · 09/03/2020 22:27

I don’t see what the lol’s are all about - lots of people do make their own sauces as a matter of course. We went out this evening to run errands and by the time we got home it was too late to cook the meal I had planned to make, so I made linguine. I threw together a quick sauce with garlic, red chilli and parsley gently sautéed in extra virgin olive oil with lemon juice/lemon zest, seasoned with salt and black pepper. I chucked in a big handful of small prawns from the freezer as well and it was all warmed through and ready by the time the pasta was done.

StampMc · 09/03/2020 22:39

i has almost exactly the same as ninkanink tonight but with courgette and without lemon and parsley. I do it with clams sometime instead of prawns.

On Saturday I had spaghetti with tinned sardine, garlic, chilli, tinned tomatoes, and onion. Last week I also had pasta with butter, Parmesan, black pepper and frozen peas on one day, carbonara on another, bacon mushroom, blue cheese and spinach on another. It’s more dull than lol.

Ivebeentohellanditscalledikea · 09/03/2020 22:45

Think I must be the only person who buys jars or sauce. Mainly because whenever I try to make my own it's horrible as I am a terrible cook. I can cook other things but every time I've made pasta sauce the kids won't touch it.

mastertomsmum · 09/03/2020 22:47

I never buy jars of sauce or passata. We make sauce with tomatoes or other veg and olive oil

Ninkanink · 09/03/2020 23:06

We do use passata. As do plenty of Italians. If it’s good enough for them it’s good enough for us.

katewhinesalot · 09/03/2020 23:14

If it's not used now the pasta can be used up eventually. If you buy the other more interesting stuff that a pp suggested meals/pies/curries/sausages/meats/sauces/etc that would provide a much more balanced and enjoyable meal plan if one was actually trying to eat rations. that you wouldn't normally buy, then in the hopeful event that it isn't needed, you are left with stuff you would prefer not to eat or waste money and food by not eating it.

Pasta is a safe emergency food that won't be wasted. Toilet rolls won't be wasted either. Don't forget diarrhea is predicted too.

Ninkanink · 09/03/2020 23:20

My comment on tinned foods/packets which you’ve quoted was in relation to baked beans, not pasta.

Facingtheunkown · 09/03/2020 23:24

Someone did mention adult nappies? For the covid diarrhea?

Sparklingbrook · 09/03/2020 23:27

I hate tinned tomatoes, and not fussed about pasta at all so I won't be sat in my loo roll fort eating them while waiting for my home made bread to rise...

I haven't read anywhere that Coronavirus causes diarrhoea so the whole loo roll thing is a bit strange anyway.

JellyfishandShells · 09/03/2020 23:32

Jar sauce is weirdly gloopy.

I buy WAY more pasta than sauces. Mostly we have it with cheese of some kind. I also use it as an easy side for a lot of meals.

I promise I'm not the poster with the chicken Kiev and pasta husband, but we do quite like chicken Kiev and pasta.

NeckPainChairSearch · 10/03/2020 02:01

lol at the 'we never use jarred sauces' lot , typical MN

lol at the 'typical MN' shite.

I don't know many grown adults who buy pasta sauce on a regular basis. It isn't 'typical MN' to fry an onion and add passata/tomatoes or stir a spoonful of pesto into pasta.

Trying to dress up basic cooking skills as 'lol typical MN' is a bit forced.

excitedmumtobe87 · 10/03/2020 02:10

I always make my own pasta sauce too... but in defence of OP tinned and fresh tomatoes were in plentiful supply on sat and mon in my local aldi and Tesco even though the
Pasta had sold out. Ditto Ocado online. So how to make tomato sauce for the pasta!? (I’ve been buying two tins from each local shop for days rather than make a dent in stock and I usually make a batch sauce out of 20 tins every month and I’ve run out!)

excitedmumtobe87 · 10/03/2020 02:13

And pasta is also lovely with just oil, oil and veg or salad, cheese sauce, pesto, herb or veg sauce. I do find it weird the tomatoes are in full stock though!

Isn’t pesto usually jarred.....?

bellinisurge · 10/03/2020 07:02

Shit. I must be MN-ing wrong. Had Lamb pasta bake last night and [whisper it] used a shop bought jarred sauce because it was quick.

I often jar up my own sauce using tomatoes from my own garden if that helps reset the balance. 😂😂

SoupDragon · 10/03/2020 07:05

I do and I don't give a shit :) There is one day a week when all I want to do is stir a jar into some pasta.
