I was wandering around the supermarket doing my weekly shop earlier and noticed all the pasta was gone but the shelves of pasta sauce / passatta/ pesto etc are still full, what the heck are people planning to do with their big stockpiles of plain pasta?

I apologise in advance because I realise this type of post has been done to dealth already

@DGRossetti , I agree that people need to have a think about dependence on toilet paper. But I am not sure now is the time.

KahlanRahl · 10/03/2020 12:31

The "essentials" do make me wonder about peoples cooking skills. If you have basic flour and other basic things you can make pasta, bread, chapati, pancakes, pizza et cetera. I don't see why people feel the need to stock up on separate stuff when the basic products would actually give much more options.

bringincrazyback · 10/03/2020 12:34

Good grief, the condescension from some people on this thread. No, some people don't make everything from scratch. The horror!

Really would have thought that in 2020 women would have stopped judging each other on crap like how much they cook from scratch. If some people enjoy cooking from scratch, that's great, but why the looking-down-nose-ness from some (note that I said some) of the I-always-make-my-own brigade? Hmm

Baaaahhhhh · 10/03/2020 12:34

Even in "lockdown" you are able to go to the shops (as long as you are not unwell of course). People will still go to work, and you can still go out to the shops.

bellinisurge · 10/03/2020 12:37

@KahlanRahl , again I agree. I'm a general prepper so going back to basics and multiple uses for things including food ingredients is what I do.
But while I think current events should give people pause to reflect moving forward, tbe here and now needs to be addressed. For the overwhelming majority of people, not being able to go out and maybe not having 24/7 access to everything will be a massive shock.

Frangipanini · 10/03/2020 12:37

If you run out of lasagna sheets you can always use squares of loo roll instead or curl it round to make cannelloni.

bellinisurge · 10/03/2020 12:39

Ha. Ha.

I probably could make all of those if I felt so inclined. But I don't. Plus if I'm ill I'll probably be even less inclined than usual to make anything. But the DC still need feeding and I'm a single parent.

Having said that I haven't stock piled anything beyond what I've usually got. And most of that is running out thanks to a fuck up with my pay AngrySad

DysonFury · 10/03/2020 12:44

With butter and salt Gin

Jux · 10/03/2020 13:25

I actually like cold plain pasta - no butter, no salt, nothing - and will eat any left over the next day.

Notwiththeseknees · 10/03/2020 13:36

Add butter, fresh sage (from the garden) and cheese?
Garlic, bacon & butter?
Chopped (tinned) tomatoes & herbs?
Peas & onions (frozen)?

I've bought one jar of pesto in case I feel too ill to stand & I can just chuck some on. Otherwise, salt, pepper & chilli oil?

My pasta stash is tiny and I'm not back in the UK until the end of the month, so just a little box of stuff to see me through.

That's fine. It's about knowing how to, not actually doing it every day. If you have to choose between being hungry or baking a bread then most people would rather bale the bread. I can bake bread if need be, but till then I'd rather buy it in tge shop because I find it time consuming. People are stockpiling stuff where they might make different choices and save money if they thought about it more. Just panic buying loo roll and spaghetti just seems a bit.... I'd like to say a pity but not sure that that is tge right translation.

Now is exactly the time. When this is over, people will forget. Same way they'll forget how shit SSP is, and zero hours contracts, and the frightening reliance of working women on a precarious childcare system.

steppemum · 10/03/2020 13:56

I did my on-line shop last night and I needed PASTA
Just meal planned and innocently thought we'd have a blooming lasagne.

I now have fresh artisinal lasagne sheets as they were the only pasta left in the whole sodding shop, and I couldn't be bothered to remove all the other ingredients and cmoe up with something else.

PUT THE PASTA BACK people, some of us just want to eat!

No chance of me making pasta or bread from scratch thanks. Life is too short.

and besides which, if you have lots of flour and nothing else in the cupboards everyone knows it is time for pancakes

Thisisworsethananticpated · 10/03/2020 14:13

I also bought tinned tomatoes Grin

outnumberedmummy · 10/03/2020 14:15

My DC would live off plain pastaGrin

I namechange often but recognise you from the prepper threads -waves-

I still find it useful to post these things. These threads are read by more people than just the posters on them. If it stops someone panic buying and thinking about other options then I'm happy. It's exactly the people who d

Posted too soon.

Its the people who don't think and never do things differently who are most vulnerable during crises. That is seen time and time again.

Evolution in action, perhaps. On a macro scale ?

bellinisurge · 10/03/2020 15:01

I take your point @KahlanRahl [waves back].
It's hard to know how receptive people on here are going to be to looking at things from a different angle or trying different ideas that suit them as a possible alternative.
Still smarting a bit from being called fucking mental.
It's all about taking back control Grin so that you could perhaps have an alternative to bog roll at a pinch.
I think people generally would prefer to choose when they experiment with new ideas. I hope all they get from these events is pause for thought about stuff. Not something more drastic.

Geneshish · 10/03/2020 15:06

No tinned tomatoes on the shelves in my local supermarket- theres your answer!

Kuponut · 10/03/2020 15:07

I had a glut of tomatoes in the summer from the garden so made vats of tomato sauce and froze it... hence I need pasta but not sauce.

KahlanRahl · 10/03/2020 15:25

@Bellinisurge Still smarting a bit from being called fucking mental.

If it helps: my dad always thought that my mum was mental with her stockpile of food, medicin and water (tapwater wasn't drinkable). We lived in eastern europe when Chernobyl happrned and in our town the shops were empty. We lived on that stockpile of food and water healthily for almost a week before stuff quieted down.

Prepping has always been seen as unnecessary, till it is.

YourVagesty · 10/03/2020 15:31

I'm with 5zeds on this - you don't need jars of pasta sauce. It's rare for me to use jars of pasta sauce. I usually use tins of tomatoes, tomato puree, Italian herbs, kidney beans etc...I've ample stocks of all of that.
