I was wandering around the supermarket doing my weekly shop earlier and noticed all the pasta was gone but the shelves of pasta sauce / passatta/ pesto etc are still full, what the heck are people planning to do with their big stockpiles of plain pasta?

I apologise in advance because I realise this type of post has been done to dealth already

We always have an entire shelf of tinned tomatoes. And frozen home made pesto.

TweetUsOnFacebook · 09/03/2020 14:01

The pasta shelves are very bare here but rice and noodles are still plentiful in my supermarket. I just add stir fry frozen veg and a bit of chilli sauce. I'd happily live on that for 2 weeks.

Porcupineinwaiting · 09/03/2020 14:03

Pasta keeps, it can be cooked using v little fuel and it can fill you up. It's also easy to cook, which is a consideration if all the adults in a household are laid up.

And for those who think you cant eat it plain, you can flavour it easily and anyway you can if you are hungry enough.

Reginabambina · 09/03/2020 14:05

Presumably they have tons of tomato and lot of garlic/onions etc?

Ninkanink · 09/03/2020 14:07

Mmmmm I love pasta. Really fancy it now! Tonight we’re having pork/beef mince in a tomato sauce with lots of garlic and roasted aubergine. Probably with rigatoni. (Not the point of the thread but I’m really looking forward to it! Grin )

willowpatterns · 09/03/2020 14:14

What are they actually going to do, eat nothing but baked beans for weeks on end??
Well that would explain the need for all those toilet rolls. Perhaps they'd better stockpile some air freshener as well Grin

willowpatterns · 09/03/2020 14:17

Pasta does not give you diabetes
I beg to differ. If you are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes (as I am), then a long-term diet which is very high in carbohydrates could push you over the edge.

Thinkingabout1t · 09/03/2020 14:18

I know one sainsbury that had a flll stock of loo rolls as of an hour ago...... should I announce it on FB and cause a riot?

Run back and buy the lot, sell on eBay and take early retirement!

Ninkanink · 09/03/2020 14:19

Yes but I venture that most people are not planning a long-term diet of nothing but pasta...

Coquohvan · 09/03/2020 14:19

We always have various types of pasta in. OH Italian, tinned tomato’s passata purée garlic in fact all Italian foodstuffs In stock as we eat a Mediterranean diet.

Mintjulia · 09/03/2020 14:21

I’m not sure I’ve got this prepping business right. Grin

I got food and toiletries in to last me and ds two weeks so if we are ill and I feel terrible, I won’t have to drag myself to Tesco.

Others seem to be prepping for six months civil unrest. If that happens, we’re going to starve.

KahlanRahl · 09/03/2020 14:21

I don’t get why people are bulk buying eggs either ... they only last a couple of weeks

Whisk them and freeze in bags per 2. That way we can make our own pasta by adding flour 😁.

Just kidding, I don't make pasta (anymore). But I do make my own sauces.

willowpatterns · 09/03/2020 14:22

@Ninkanink I was responding to a comment about pasta - it applies equally to other carbohydrates. Or shall I tell the expert who runs the pre-diabetes clinic I go to that she and the NHS have got it all wrong?

KahlanRahl · 09/03/2020 14:29

How about pasta with homemade pesto (basil, garlic, parmezan cheese and roasted pinenuts). Add meat if you wish (like chicken).

Or soffrito (chop fine and cook the life out of celery, onion and carrots in some olive oil), add tomato puree. Add meat and red wine to that for a bolognese sauce.

Or make a sauce with spinach and cream.

Or salmon, leeks, mushrooms and pine nuts.

There really is no need to buy a jar of sauce.

swishthecat · 09/03/2020 14:29

Eat it with butter and sage sauce. Very simple to make.

codenameduchess · 09/03/2020 14:29

Others seem to be prepping for six months civil unrest

Only with loo roll, dry pasta and had wash though, pretty dull 6 months and surely eating nothing but dry pasta will bung them up and render the loo roll redundant.

Ninkanink · 09/03/2020 14:31

Given that I have type 2 and my child has type 1 with unusual presentation, I’ve read a lot of books and engaged with many knowledgeable people at the forefront of diabetes research and treatment, including some of the country’s leading consultants, so I reckon I’ve got a pretty good understanding of diabetes and its known causes. Added to that I’m a seasoned low-carber of many years’ experience so I do get what you’re saying. Smile

I wasn’t really arguing with your point anyway - just saying that having to eat pasta 3 x weekly for let’s say maybe two or three months probably isn’t going to be the tipping point (and that’s only if they want to clear their stock more quickly, in reality they’ll probably just eat through it over a year or however long it takes for their stash).

Topseyt · 09/03/2020 14:33

When my kids were preschoolers (long time ago now, youngest is nearly 18) they used to use dried pasta to make things like Christmas decorations. Glue the pasta to a piece of cardboard, spray it with silver or gold coloured spray, chuck on some glitter and a bit of tinsel - job done.

We do eat pasta, maybe about once a week. I make my own sauce usually, so would rarely buy any except for the odd jar of pesto, which we like better. I've always got at least a couple of bags of pasta in. My daughters have always loved it. I might do it tonight now. I have some veg to use up and I need to finish off a jar of pesto.

Pasithea · 09/03/2020 14:40

NO GALAXY RIPPLES.

bobstersmum · 09/03/2020 14:47

Not seen any empty pasta shelves near me, the only thing sold out is hand gel.

StampMc · 09/03/2020 14:52

I’ve never bought pasta sauce and we have pasta probably 3x a week. I have a few “store cupboard “ recipes but none involve jars of sauce.

ColourMyDreams · 09/03/2020 14:52

They're welcome to it. I can't stand the stuff in any shape or form. Yuk.
Same goes for rice.
They've probably got so much that it will end up in the bin.

HazelBite · 09/03/2020 14:55

So every Sunday evening I sit down at the laptop to do my weekly online grocery shop, from my saved list, to be delivered usually on a Tuesday 10am-12pm.
Huh the earliest delivery available was Thursday and loads of the stuff on my list was "out of stock"eg baked beans, tinned tomatoes, bottled water etc, etc.
Why would the Supermarkets be out of bottled water? Only sparkling was available, am I missing something here? Unfortunately I can't drink tap water, but the vast majority of the population can, perhaps they are going to cook all that pasta in bottled water!

TheCoolerQueen · 09/03/2020 14:57

I'm surprised that the pasta sauce manufacturers haven't gone bust, according to this thread no one buys the stuff.

GrumpyHoonMain · 09/03/2020 14:59

I doubt anyone has been panic buying pasta - the supermarket probably hasn’t gotten around to ordering it due to all the extra toilet rolls they need.
