I was wandering around the supermarket doing my weekly shop earlier and noticed all the pasta was gone but the shelves of pasta sauce / passatta/ pesto etc are still full, what the heck are people planning to do with their big stockpiles of plain pasta?

I apologise in advance because I realise this type of post has been done to dealth already

It's for making necklaces and bracelets while bored when they're not allowed out of the house Grin

Develop type 2 diabetes?

dayslikethese1 · 09/03/2020 12:57

I wondered this too.

dayslikethese1 · 09/03/2020 12:57

Build a fort?

katy1213 · 09/03/2020 12:58

And what they're going to put on it if the shelves are bare of fresh produce? But this could be my golden chance to clear the cupboard of 15 different pasta shapes (at last count) when I normally only use spaghetti/fettucine/penne.

People who are very confident that a major health crisis won’t impact water supplies or the national grid.

FreezerBird · 09/03/2020 13:00

Eat it, probably.

Maybe plain (my ds will happily eat plain pasta Hmm), or with cheese sauce, carbonara, that lovely marmite pasta recipe nigella does, with veg in a pasta salad.

Loads of options.

slipperywhensparticus · 09/03/2020 13:00

It's a toilet roll and pasta fort you heathens and I'm not letting ANY OF YOU IN!!

(yes of course I'm joking....🤫)

SoupDragon · 09/03/2020 13:00

In my case, I thought it was easy to cook if you're feeling ropey and also DD could cook it herself and add a jar of sauce. However, I only bought one bag (and really should have checked my cupboard before shopping!!)

It's like people are preparing for the zombie apocalypse.

I actually need some for the DC, wonder whether it'll actually turn up with the online shop.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 09/03/2020 13:01

One of the empty shelves in our supermarket was bread mixes. So at least some forward planning...

SoupDragon · 09/03/2020 13:02

There was no flour in my local Aldi this morning.

5zeds · 09/03/2020 13:03

Eat it? We have pasta several times a week. It never involves a jar of “pasta sauce”. I think that’s only what people with tons of money or very small families do.

Isthistrueor · 09/03/2020 13:03

Create weapons for the inevitable apocalypse.

ACautionaryTale · 09/03/2020 13:04

I know one sainsbury that had a flll stock of loo rolls as of an hour ago...... should I announce it on FB and cause a riot?

LOL

TW2013 · 09/03/2020 13:07

I would never usually have a shop pasta sauce so I imagine they will use tins/ frozen veg to make their own sauce.

sittingonacornflake · 09/03/2020 13:09

I've never used a jar of sauce. I like pasta.

goodwinter · 09/03/2020 13:10

Maybe they'll make their own sauces? Tinned tomatoes, egg yolks, flour/milk, etc... It's not all jars!

fedup21 · 09/03/2020 13:11

Add a tin of chopped tomatoes, basil and some tinned mixed beans!

BiddyPop · 09/03/2020 13:17

We occasionally have a jar of pasta sauce (and occasionally use a jar of "pasta" sauce with a different meal involving potatoes....). But more often than not, have things like:
Cream and white wine sauce
Carbonara
HM tomato sauce (with tinned tomatoes or passata as the base)
Olive oil and lemon dressing
Cheese sauce
Pesto (which I get at delicatessen not supermarket)

Or use it as the basis for getting crafty with my Cub Scout pack..... Grin

Although the Cubs are using this "time of crisis" to persuade me that they should be doing more backwoods cooking and making their own soap using ash from wood fires - we can't do a cooking activity for a few months, schedule and resources-wise, and I have no notion of making our own soap!! But we'll teach the new ones to whittle sticks (for marshmallows at campfire, but some older ones will claim they can go spear fishing with them.....). Hmm I do love the little darlings and the way they see the world!! Grin

I guess eat it eventually! I wonder if there will be any shortages due to the situation in italy? I know we make pasta here but typically i only buy italian pasta as its a bit nicer but perhaps won't have the choice soon?

Cheesymonster · 09/03/2020 13:22

I wondered this too. The cynic in me thought they were selling it on eBay.

My tesco has run out of furniture polish which I thought was odd.

shortytrekker · 09/03/2020 13:24

I live a long way from a big shop so always buy a couple of massive pasta packs. Now I look like I'm stockpiling! Confused My children like it with just olive oil or even plain, and with grated cheese. Also, we use tinned tomatoes not jars.

Lollygaggles · 09/03/2020 13:26

Surely just make your own? It takes 15 minutes.

Garlic, leeks, peppers, toms, carrots, green lentils, mushrooms or courgettes if you want. Blend and yum!

Ninkanink · 09/03/2020 13:28

My DH and I were laughing about the shelves being absolutely cleared of baked beans in more than one of our local supermarkets. What are they actually going to do, eat nothing but baked beans for weeks on end?? Now I like baked beans as part of a cooked breakfast or sometimes on toast, but I’m pretty sure I’d absolutely hate to have to eat tin after tin after tin...

Meanwhile, in our local large cheap retailer (won’t say which one because I want the stores to remain at a good stock level for any eventuality in which I might need it) there were shelves upon shelves full of a wide variety of tinned and packet meals/pies/curries/sausages/meats/sauces/etc that would provide a much more balanced and enjoyable meal plan if one was actually trying to eat rations.

We don’t eat pasta very often anymore (although mildly ironically we’re having it tonight!) so we aren’t missing it in the shops. We’ve got a few bags of different varieties anyway to tide us through until shops are restocked.

I’m hungry now.
