Aibu to wonder what they're going to do with all that pasta?

I was wandering around the supermarket doing my weekly shop earlier and noticed all the pasta was gone but the shelves of pasta sauce / passatta/ pesto etc are still full, what the heck are people planning to do with their big stockpiles of plain pasta?

I apologise in advance because I realise this type of post has been done to dealth already

The thing is if your locked in your home for two weeks or more how do you get all this fantastic fresh food to make a pasta sauce from scratch? It's not courgette season yet? I dont grow my own garlic or onions or other veg so where would I get it from?

Coulddowithanap · 10/03/2020 07:10

I always buy the massive bags of pasta as they work out good value, annoyingly they've all sold out locally as well as the small packs. We have lots of premade Bolognese sauce in the freezer so don't need any jars (although they are handy to have in when I'm rushing to cook dinner)

bellinisurge · 10/03/2020 07:14

Exactly,@slipperywhensparticus . Hence jarred is fine.

This.

If there is a food shortage then it’s a guarantee the dried and tinned food won’t be sold out while the aisles of fresh fruit and veg are fully stocked.

So it doesn’t matter whether you never use jars or “it’s easy to whip up- few toms, peppers and mushrooms”. If there’s no pasta on the shelves you won’t be getting fresh courgettes!

So it’ll be plain pasta or jars.

bumblingbovine49 · 10/03/2020 07:49

I regularly buy 3 kg packs which last about 3-4 weeks for 3 of us. DH doesn't like pasta much and I try not to eat it more than once a week. The rest is eaten by my 15 year old ds. He doesn't eat much else by choice.

I usually have a 3kg of fusilli or penne in as well as various other types such as lasagne, cannelloni, spaghetti etc.. We regularly use them all

@soupdragon
Me too ( and shh don't tell anyone but my family is Italian)

SoupDragon · 10/03/2020 09:01

😂😂

BiddyPop · 10/03/2020 09:21

I know I mentioned a whole load of ways I do pasta without a jarred sauce, but there are nights when it’s good for speed.

And we like a tomato and chilli “pasta” sauce baked with baby potatoes and chorizo - no pasta in sight!! (That one is very handy for having int he oven on a timer on particularly busy days).

BiddyPop · 10/03/2020 09:21

Does that mean I get kicked off MN 😂😂

I do think that most people use jars, but just to answer your question: I'm growing spinach, pak choy, peppers, beans, basil, leeks and lettuce in the window sill.

I have to because my veggie patch is near a pond and if the plants are too small the slugs eat them. So I give them a head start inside. Some will be ready to eat in a few weeks, others will take months. So I can eat pasta with fresh veggies about two weeks from now. The oregano, silver beet and potatoes have already been planted outside.

It is my hobby though, so nothing new.

I notice lasagna sheets are selling less well than eg spaghetti/penne. I fear this may be short sighted. The only possible use (other than endless meals) I am now thinking sensible would be to part cook a lasagne sheet and fashion some form of face mask. Or loo roll even. In fact I may just pop out to the shops . . .

KahlanRahl · 10/03/2020 09:53

Someone did mention adult nappies? For the covid diarrhea?

Really poor people in Asia rinse their bum by pouring water out of a jug. That seems to work as well so you don't have to bother with finding extra loo roll to stock up.

That might even work better than the real deal Grin

We don't have a pasta or anything else stockpile. We do however have an allotment that has some winter stuff coming through now. In lockdown though do I need to go and guard it? Could I even get here? It's a ten minute walk away.

Electric fencing?!

I decided to be offended by that Grin why poor ? Hmm.

Most of the world doesn't have mains sewage, so the use of toilet paper is a moot point anyway. You could have just said "most people in Asia" and been just as correct, but a little less superior.

Because - heresy though it might be - I personally do not consider the apex of western civilisation to be bog roll. In fact environmentally speaking, bogroll is probably not a great thing overall.

We have dried garlic and onion powder and mixed herbs and tinned tomatoes in and I made a nice sauce last night with tin of tomatoes, fresh onion as we had some in garlic power and dried herbs.

Also have tinned and frozen veg in. Could also make a cheese sauce thought don't know if UHT milk which we have in would be nice in that.

We still have several jars of pesto in which are good for more than just pasta meals – don’t tend to buy the pre-done pasta sauce as much.

The freezers are full at minute as just done months shop. We do a big shop then top up as month goes on with fresh food as money and time permit - though do like to have alternative options if we can't. As soon as they empty will be filled with left over sauces from meals where we haven't eaten it all or we've done some for freezing for quick meals later in month.

So doesn't seem that odd to me that people aren't buying out the sauce jars at same rate as pasta. Though I am surpised it's lagana pasta as that seems less versatile than some other options.

moolady1977 · 10/03/2020 11:02

There was no pasta at all on the shelves in my local Tesco store last night which is a big 24 hour store which means if we do end up stuck in the house I'm gonna struggle as it's the main part of my diet thanks to reflux and being put on a strict food diet
Toilet rolls weren't great but only the scented ,coloured ,Shea butter and aloe Vera stuff left which I can't use , didn't really see any other stuff missing but bleach was restricted to 5 per customer

Ninkanink · 10/03/2020 11:06

We have plenty of veg in the freezer. We also usually buy 3-4 heads of garlic, a bag of onions, ginger and chilli in our weekly shop. If necessary those can be rationed to last longer. We always have jars of antipasti in the fridge (courgette, peppers, olives, artichoke hearts, sun dried tomatoes) as well as capers and tinned anchovies/tuna. We also always have plenty of tinned tomatoes and passata. There is half a block of Parmesan in the fridge. At the moment we’ve also got preserved lemons and black garlic. If I was going to be at home for any length of time I would freeze lemons and limes and whatever fresh herbs are in the fridge (at the moment that’s parsley, coriander, tarragon and basil), but we also already have a container in the freezer full of open packets of herbs as we always freeze what we don’t use to avoid waste. From memory that contains rosemary, thyme, sage, mint, kafir lime leaves and bay leaves.

We’ve also got a well stocked drinks trolley which I feel is important. Wink

We make our own pasta sauces because we’re both quite committed foodies and we enjoy cooking and trying new recipes. We also don’t have children so we’re not run ragged in the evening like so many parents are - when I was a single parent to young children I used whatever shortcuts I fancied. It isn’t a superiority or snob thing as we’re quite happy to use whatever shortcuts we want, it just so happens that jarred pasta sauce isn’t one of them.

SoupDragon · 10/03/2020 11:07

A good amount of pasta in Sainsbury's this morning. Including their red lentil penne which has been out of stock for ages and is actually very nice in a pasta bake.

No hand wash or toilet paper and only about 4 bars of soap though.

Because the ones with more money have a shower type thing instead of a jug. Why is that offensive?

KahlanRahl · 10/03/2020 12:21

Sorry, I forgot to taf you. Can you read my previous post please? I don't understand why I offended you.

Did they have eggs and flour? Because you can then make your own. Bit of a boring faff but it was all the rage in my friendship group 20 something years ago.

I was trying to joke. Badly it seems Grin.

Let's just say of all the "essentials" that people seem to feel the need to stockpile, I think "toilet roll" is up there with a Dior dress and matching earrings as something I'd feel the need to take into the bunker if the balloon went up ...

KahlanRahl · 10/03/2020 12:28

Ooooh aha. We don't have penny's where I live so maybe that's why it didn't drop Grin.

I actually agree with you. It's not essential.
