I was wandering around the supermarket doing my weekly shop earlier and noticed all the pasta was gone but the shelves of pasta sauce / passatta/ pesto etc are still full, what the heck are people planning to do with their big stockpiles of plain pasta?

I apologise in advance because I realise this type of post has been done to dealth already

Olive oil, cracked black pepper ?

DF used to do a thing with cabbage and pepper.

And really, no one should not be making their own sauce from scratch anyway, surely Grin

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 09/03/2020 13:31

My local Sainsbury's was stripped of........ mushrooms.

Riddle me that!

TabbyMumz · 09/03/2020 13:32

"Develop type 2 diabetes?"
Pasta does not give you diabetes.

ShirleyPhallus · 09/03/2020 13:35

Actually very irritating as I’m 38 weeks pregnant so trying to stock up the cupboards and freezer for when we don’t want to go out next few weeks

And there are a bunch of idiots who don’t usually wash their hands making a fortress out of pasta and toilet roll ready for the apocalypse to strike

crustycrab · 09/03/2020 13:37

I don't use jars of sauce

Ninkanink · 09/03/2020 13:39

But to answer the actual question...

We don’t use jarred pasta sauces (well maybe once a year or something if we really can’t be bothered). Generally we make our own sauces using tinned tomatoes and/or passata and vegetables, or dress it with olive oil, lemon and herbs, or make creamy/cheesy sauces.

GloriaMumsnet · 09/03/2020 13:41

Hi everyone, we've moved this to the coronavirus topic area.

Ninkanink · 09/03/2020 13:42

Oh I see you mentioned passata in the OP - we get ours in cartons from the supermarket which we do most of our shopping at, and they’re still fully stocked. We don’t use pesto from a jar as if we fancy that we just make it ourselves.

PointlessAddict · 09/03/2020 13:43

Wipe their arse with it.

JammieCodger · 09/03/2020 13:43

We have pasta around once a week and I haven't bought a jar of pasta sauce for at least ten years (and then only to use as a pizza topping.)

SinkGirl · 09/03/2020 13:44

Passata and dried herbs
Sage butter (if you freeze some sage leaves)

Maybe they’ve cooked a big batch of bolognese and put it in the freezer?

Polkadotpjs · 09/03/2020 13:45

No loo roll or anti bac wipes in my SAINSBURY'S but TONNES of pasta. Weird. And furniture polish?! Why?

Aneley · 09/03/2020 13:45

Make their own sauce? We never bought pasta sauce in a jar and we eat pasta at least once per week.

Springbubble912 · 09/03/2020 13:47

I found that a bit strange too - if you are too poorly to go shopping you are probably too poorly to want to make your own sauce , or if you can’t go out to buy pasta you also can’t get fresh produce to make sauce - I bought jars - I normally mostly make my own - apart from a couple of sauces the kids like ...

megletthesecond · 09/03/2020 13:48

Eat it.
It won't go off for at least a year. I know this because I've recently rotated my Brexit stash.

HoffiCoffi13 · 09/03/2020 13:49

I live in a really classy place... the only thing that’s sold out in my local supermarket is pot noodles Grin

marigoldsmarigolds · 09/03/2020 13:49

Pointless Addict he he heSmile

megletthesecond · 09/03/2020 13:50

Oh Passata. That won't go off either.

Butterwhy · 09/03/2020 13:51

Pasta lasts ages and is packed quite compactly isn't it, plenty of stuff to have with it. Soft cheese, passata, tinned tomatoes, tuna, pesto. Beans are actually pretty nutritious aside from the sugary sauce, plenty of protein and quite filling. I bought one extra packet so that will easily get eaten, if people have bought loads and loads then I'm not sure!

starfishmummy · 09/03/2020 13:55

Pasta is a regular here. But I never buy sauce.

RedskyAtnight · 09/03/2020 13:55

Pasta lasts for ages.
And hopefully people will donate it to their local foodbank if they are not planning to eat it themselves.

(My DD can eat plain pasta by the bucketload; sauces not needed)

Random18 · 09/03/2020 13:55

My youngest would happily have pasta for wvery meal. Preferably without sauce!

We have quite a stash built up although I have only bought 1 big bag of fusilli since panic buying commenced.

Springbubble912 · 09/03/2020 13:56

I don’t get why people are bulk buying eggs either ... they only last a couple of weeks - also in my local supermarket things like puff pastry and fresh make your own cookies and croissants were all gone ..

Jux · 09/03/2020 13:56

I rarely buy pasta sauce, I make my own, except sometimes we get some pesto. The bottle of pesto we have right now (unopened) was bought sometime last year.

Random18 · 09/03/2020 13:57

And I don't tend to buy jars of sauce but always have a stock of passata, tinned tomatoes, puree, garlic, onions etc
