Are all the deaths from the same care home?
@AvocadoOwl I don't know to be honest, but they were saying at the weekend that around 25 patients and 25 members of staff were showing symptoms so they thought that there were highly likely to be a number of cases there.
I think the pattern we are largely seeing is that we have become aware of localised outbreaks when someone in a vulnerable setting - such as a hospital or a care home - becomes very serious. When other people in the facility - either patients or medical staff - are tested they are positive.
This has been the case for the Wuhan outbreak, when it turned up in Iran and when it became obvious in Italy.
We should expect to see the same in the UK tbh.
On the flip side to that, it would suggest that since we are only noticing the disease when we get hospitalisations or serious cases already in hospital, that the serious case rate is percentage a lower one than has been suggested.
But it highlights just how vulnerable people with pre-existing conditions are - not simply because they are more likely to have serious complications, but also because they are more likely to be in environments where they are infected in large numbers at the same time.
I will try and follow up on this and find out if these new deaths are indeed at the care home. I know that they had at least two serious cases yesterday as it was.

The area had many
Its all been contained
The other cases are mainly from outside

marg I did go to a gym bootcamp class today but no one else turned up (although I think a couple of regulars were on nights) so I ended up with a personal training session. TBH I've always washed my hands straight after leaving the equipment, too many sweaty people around.

Has [[https://twitter.com/FryRsquared/status/1234491912775782400 this Tweet]] from Hannah Fry (scientist) about the importance of hand-washing already been shared?

Just catching up on the previous thread. I've been out at work. Hoping Boris' plan has some more information about how schools can deal with this. We have a lot of worried parents, and no information other than wash their hands properly.

Great first post @GPwife2411 ! Lots of good links on there.
I was going to post this on the last thread re whether or not we have "contained" the outbreak in the UK.
I'm not 100% sure we can say the Brighton case is contained yet. I think we have to wait at least until the end of the week. The Essex case has come from somewhere, for example.
As others have said, I think the next week is critical for the UK.
I am cautiously optimistic that we have only seen 2 community spread cases so far, but equally I saw recently that 15,000 people have come back from Italy in the last week in London alone.
The increasing number of cases in other European countries, especially France will have consequences for us too, though.
I do think the pilot scheme of testing from 100 clinics was a good idea though and something other governments should be implementing.

I was going to attach an image but the paper clip symbol seems to have disappeared, anyone else?

Each new outbreak area here has been shut down
Something is working.
It's very encouraging that WHO have stated containment is feasible, but if it was flu it wouldn't be so.
We don't know the means of transmission, and tue spread rate being quoted as higher doesn't make sense to me.

UPDATE: Sixth person dies of coronavirus in Snohomish County, WA; no word on their age. The other 5 were all elderly residents at the long-term care home.

I hope I'm helping - I keep hearing advice about handwashing.
Please make sure hands are 'well washed'.
As part of a 'health' topic in school we worked with a nurse who brought in a 'stain' which showed up germs left on hands AFTER washing.
In most cases, after regular hand washing, the stain showed pupils had germs right around the edge of the nail bed, in a 'U' shape on every finger. So wash well, especially around each finger nail.
I was surprised at the time - and really think this is important now.

Public Health - Seattle & King County @KCPubHealth
We are reporting 4 new cases today. Of the 4 cases, 2 have died. In addition, 1 of our previously reported cases has now died.
This brings the total number of cases to 14, including 5 deaths total.
These are the new cases:
• A male in his 50s, hospitalized at Highline Hospital. No known exposures.
• A male in his 70s, a resident of LifeCare, hospitalized at EvergreenHealth in Kirkland. The man had underlying health conditions, and died 3/1/20
• A female in her 70s, a resident of LifeCare, hospitalized at EvergreenHealth in Kirkland. The woman had underlying health conditions, and died 3/1/20
• A female in her 80s, a resident of LifeCare, was hospitalized at EvergreenHealth
• In addition, a woman in her 80s, who was already reported as in critical condition at Evergreen, has died. She died on 3/1/20
And this is yesterdays report:
publichealthinsider.com/2020/03/01/public-health-confirms-four-new-covid-19-cases-including-one-death-bringing-total-cases-in-king-county-to-ten/
The four new cases are in:
A female in her 80s, hospitalized at EvergreenHealth in Kirkland. The woman has underlying health conditions, and is in critical condition
A female in her 90s, hospitalized at EvergreenHealth in Kirkland. The woman has underlying health conditions, and is in critical condition
A male in his 70s, hospitalized at EvergreenHealth in Kirkland. The man has underlying health conditions, and is in critical condition
A male in his 70s was hospitalized at EvergreenHealth. He had underlying health conditions and died on 2/29/20.
All of these newly identified cases are among residents of LifeCare, the skilled nursing facility in Kirkland that was previously identified to have two associated cases.
Six other cases, already reported earlier by Public Health, include:
A man in his 60s, hospitalized at Valley Medical Center in Renton.
A man in 60s, hospitalized at Virginia Mason Medical Center.
A woman in her 50s, who had traveled to South Korea; recovering at home
A woman in her 70s, who was a resident of LifeCare in Kirkland, hospitalized at EvergreenHealth
A woman in her 40s, employed by LifeCare, who is hospitalized at Overlake Medical Center
A man in his 50s, who was hospitalized and died at EvergreenHealth
So the majority (but not all) of these known cases are connected to LifeCare
Hopefully that goes some way to explain the high number of deaths suddenly being reported in Washtington State.

Those are some pretty grim stats. Talk about sticking their head in the sand.

King County declared a state of emergency Monday morning, as the number of deaths linked to the COVID-19 coronavirus continues to grow. According to King County Public Health, two more patients have died, and four more cases have been confirmed in the county since Sunday, bringing the total number of infections to 14. Health officials said among the latest deaths was a patient whose illness was previously announced.
EvergreenHealth said all six patients who have died in Washington state were patients at the Kirkland hospital. Five of the patients were King County residents and one patient was from Snohomish County.

Trump has responded with his usual rubbish and ineffectual self promo crap.
Nothing about the 30m without hc cover that cannot afford to go for testing or medical help.
He is risking the worlds health with his eyes shut approach
