@sansaSnark - I read that the poll of medics was self selective, so possibly not an entirely accurate reflection of all medics? Hope so anyway .....

Fourducksate · 02/03/2020 20:36

Someone asked in the previous thread (RobinRose1?) if there had been any communication from schools.

We have had a couple of emails to say
that no one in school or the immediate area surrounding school has been diagnosed with CV and they are taking advice from PHE on hand washing and good practice with cold and flu symptoms, reminding students of the importance of these.

They will let us know of any changes.

Jenasaurus · 02/03/2020 20:36

Thanks for this thread!

SansaSnark · 02/03/2020 20:37

Even so I think the poll of medics is pretty damning! Even if it's self selective, for 99% to say the NHS isn't ready is still really high.

AvocadoOwl · 02/03/2020 20:40

I don't think any heath organisation in the world could possibly be ready for a pandemic like this. I wonder what planet the 1% who think the nhs is ready is on Confused

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 20:43

The Snohomish County, Washington resident who died of coronavirus was a man in his 40s

Horehound · 02/03/2020 20:43

It's not a pandemic is it?
How many cases of "normal" flu are there each year? I think there's a lot of hysteria on here hmmm

Bessica1970 · 02/03/2020 20:43

Where did the missing case go? News has us at 39, but still at 40 on worldometers

mrshoho · 02/03/2020 20:43

Sansa it's not treally a surprise. There are only a handful of intensive care beds free in most hospitals during the Winter season so a sudden spike in patients needing intensive hospital care would be difficult to say the least.

SansaSnark · 02/03/2020 20:43

@RhubarbTea

I can understand why you're concerned, it seems more real when you know someone who may have been affected. However, to think about it- their chances of having contact with one particular pupil in a large secondary school are pretty low. Last week, the pupil likely wasn't showing symptoms and so less likely to pass the virus on.

You say you didn't get that close to them, and it doesn't sound like they were ill, so I do think your chances of catching anything are low.

Obviously if it turns out they are considered "close contacts" of this pupil, things are different, and of course if you get a cough/temp etc then you should call 111, but at the moment your chances of having caught the virus are still relatively low.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 02/03/2020 20:43

All these negative tests... how can testing for a NOVEL virus, thats completely new and never been studied be completely accurate? Any medics on here that can put it into layman’s?

Bessica1970 · 02/03/2020 20:44

How long ago was the Chinese lady in London diagnosed? We still only have 8 recovered so I hope she’s ok!

mrshoho · 02/03/2020 20:45

the missing case I presume is the clinician at the cancer hospital in Northwood who is now showing as not having the virus

WaterSheep · 02/03/2020 20:45

It's not a pandemic is it?

The WHO may not be ready to call it a pandemic, but it fits their definition.

A pandemic is the worldwide spread of a new disease.

Horehound · 02/03/2020 20:46

But that could be flu, a cold etc.
If the WHO aren't calling it a pandemic then that's good enough for me.

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 20:46

I am concerned about the validity of the tests also.

Horehound its not about just numbers, but the expected trajectory. 50 was lower than tue expected usual (so far) trajectory. Does that help?

Found out a shop nearby has put the price of hand sanitizer up from 99p to £4.99! How do these people sleep at night? That’s the price of milk, bread and eggs for families that are already financially stretched. Sad to hear but even sadder that I’m not surprised. #coronavirus

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 20:48

Unnecessary to try to politicise and criticise here.

Doesnt help anyone atall and creates a poor toxic environment for discussion.

RhubarbTea · 02/03/2020 20:48

Thanks Sansa. I know that logically. I just feel slightly eeek as I slept in the guest bedroom which normally has various teenage boys crashing in it so I'm just hoping they don't come down with it later.
Have just had some sambucol Grin

FecktheBoss · 02/03/2020 20:48

Thanks for the new thread

WaterSheep · 02/03/2020 20:50

If the WHO aren't calling it a pandemic then that's good enough for me.

That's the WHO's definition. The reasons they're not calling it a pandemic are dubious, as it fits their definition.

Wehttam · 02/03/2020 20:52

Dr John Campbell new video if it hasn’t already been out up, apologies if so. He seems slightly more concerned and is questioning the lack of pro activity instead of reactivity to developments. Anyone else feel he has been more vocal about his concerns of late?

Horehound · 02/03/2020 20:53

You are desperate for them to call it a pandemic! Seems like you almost want it to be!

Anyhoo my bit of gossip is I know that all travel for GSK employees is banned.

allthesharks · 02/03/2020 20:53

From the previous thread:

  • The advice posters given to schools suggest washing hands: -Before eating -When arriving home -After playing sport -After using a tissue -After using the toilet -When arriving at work/school*

My DP is a primary school teacher. At his school, he said that children washing their hands before school would take more time than registration. Some children go straight to the dinner hall at lunchtime without the opportunity to go to the toilet. Girls get changed before and after PE in the toilets where they would be able to wash their hands, but boys get changed in the classroom where there isn't a sink. And if you allowed a child to go to the toilet to wash their hands after every time they use a tissue, he said they'd get nothing done as everyone would use it as an excuse to leave the classroom for a few minutes.

I'm not saying any of this is right, but from a practical point of view, schools aren't set up to accommodate this level of hand washing. Hand sanitiser would be an easier option, but availability is obviously an issue at the moment.

There are 60 million people in this country
Yes we need to anticipate but perspective is needed ... 40 people diagnosed ... some Tenerife holiday makers have come home and are fine ... the media dumbs that right down ...
scaremongering everywhere ...
