Hand sanitiser sold out everywhere

I’m absolutely NOT in panic mode about the corona virus. However, I thought it may be sensible to get a couple of bottles of hand sanitiser for the kids to use at school and also for me as I have an Invisalign brace and do have to put my fingers in my mouth when out and about to remove it to eat when on the go if I don’t have access to wash facilities.
But it is sold out everywhere or charging crazy prices online. I suppose everyone else has had the same idea but I also expect there are a few panic buyers out there.
Do you think this will all calm down soon?

Cheermeupplease22 · 02/03/2020 12:38

Yes I tried to get some in ASDA and couldn’t. I really hope it does calm down as it seems over the top. In any case soap and water are better.

pinksmileysticker · 02/03/2020 12:39

Sigh. Hand sanitiser is anti bacterial not anti viral. Stock up on bar soap, instead. If you don't have access to wash facilities, bring a bottle of water!!!

I can't buy any masks anywhere as I'm working on a project using MDF. This panic buying is pathetic and people are putting tradesman at risk as they cannot obtain dust masks or even respirators. The guys at the builder's yard are absolutely hacked off with it and cannot say when these will ever be back in stock.

Try Poundland. There were bucket loads by the till in my local one a couple of days ago

BillywilliamV · 02/03/2020 12:52

Yep, checked Tesco, Aldi, M&S and B&M this morning, nothing!

swingchandelier · 02/03/2020 12:57

@pinksmileysticker anti bac over 60% ethanol is effective in killing off viruses, hence why used for Swine Flu and Norovirus and being recommended by PHE here.

tiredanddangerous · 02/03/2020 13:05

It’s mad isn’t it? I haven’t looked for any in the shops but have just gone onto my tesco app and sainsburys app and they’re all out of stock.

I wonder if lots of people have bought one bottle or a few people have gone in and bought 10 bottles each.

Lordfrontpaw · 02/03/2020 13:06

Try Superdrug. They had the big bottles and some small ones on click and collect.

Bellini12 · 02/03/2020 13:07

I suspect there is quite a lot of panic buying going on.

I wonder when the companies will restock? At least someone is doing well out of this nasty virus - their profits must be going up and up!

Bellini12 · 02/03/2020 13:08

I tried to do an online Superdrug order (I needed other bits and bobs) but all was sold out!

100ml Vodka + 50ml aloe vera gel + 10 ml tea tree oil + peppermint oil and you've got your very own anti bac gel.

Or just drink the vodka and use soap Grin

HollyBollyBooBoo · 02/03/2020 13:12

@pinksmileysticker you're right soap and water is the best thing however most anti bac rubs are 60-95% alcohol so also kill viruses.

RogueV · 02/03/2020 13:20

It’s ridiculous out of stock in Ocado too.

I hope people realise good hand hygiene in the form is washing them is the key!

Fraggle45 · 02/03/2020 13:22

I can't find any

I'm immune suppressed from treatment for ms and it's something I use all the time

Hoping the nurse at the hospital might be to help find some

inwood · 02/03/2020 13:25

Loads where I am in SE London.

However, my kids' school has banned sanitiser as a distraction.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

FoxEars · 02/03/2020 13:26

People
Need to wash their hands more.

Full stop.

People's lack of hygiene and hand washing is astonishing.

There are some dirty animals out there ...

AutumnCrow · 02/03/2020 13:27

Veterinary iodine (available online) will kill every fucking thing, if you really want to be sure. You can also buy Hibiscrub online.

Cheaper option is to buy mouthwash from somewhere like Savers containing alcohol (ethynol) and use it as a hand wash. Savers also do one containing chlorhexedine which, as a mouthwash, helps stops secondary bacterial attacks on the system via the gob if you have to touch braces / dentures / etc.

I also noticed that our local Asda had no hand sanitising gel on the main shelves in the aisles, but did have some small bottles on the shelves next to the pharmacy area. Might be worth a look.

Drink vodka and prosper Wine

Abraid2 · 02/03/2020 13:27

I have made it with surgical spirit, aloe vera and tea tree oil.

Devlesko · 02/03/2020 13:29

it has been for a few weeks now along with paracetamol, but the latter is just being restocked.

Pinkerpellosa · 02/03/2020 13:29

Do pharmacies sell surgical spirit?

RoxytheRexy · 02/03/2020 13:31

I put some on my Asda shop and it was delivered this morning fine

ParkheadParadise · 02/03/2020 13:33

You need to find a friend who works for the council.
My sister is a home carer and gets given hand sanitizer's on a weekly basis.

My house is full of them, in every handbag, car, kitchen. I don't usually use them I find them very drying.

Aderyn19 · 02/03/2020 13:33

I'm not wasting vodka by using it as hand sanitizer Shock

Bellini12 · 02/03/2020 13:34

That’s interesting. I couldn’t find paracetamol in Lidl (Or Superdrug) for weeks.

Some CF are charging an absolute bomb (£10 or more) on eBay for one 50ml hand gel (normally less than a £1).

I was in our small town yesterday for unrelated things, and almost walked into a man as I left the shop and turned the corner. He was carrying trays of the small blue carex hand gels - he had 3 trays of 20+ bottles and his very loud wife had a tray too. She very very loudly said ‘oh Derek (or whatever his name was) I can’t tell you what a weight off my shoulders it is to have these, and no bugger else is getting one I can tell you, they’re all mine’.....

It’s insanity. I could really have done with one or two for my very immobile 85 year old grandma, and for travelling on public transport which I have to do to get to work and school.

SecretIdentitee · 02/03/2020 13:36

My eldest DD is allergic to Aloe Vera, one of the things she is used to is carrying hand sanitiser as she doesn't use soap dispensers etc as she doesn't know the ingredients so rinses, dries and uses hand sanitiser.
On Saturday she was in a public bathroom and while drying her hand someone robbed the hand sanitiser from the corner of the sink.
Barmy! Will probably just fill empty bottles with soap from home for her in case this becomes widespread.
