Hand sanitiser sold out everywhere

I’m absolutely NOT in panic mode about the corona virus. However, I thought it may be sensible to get a couple of bottles of hand sanitiser for the kids to use at school and also for me as I have an Invisalign brace and do have to put my fingers in my mouth when out and about to remove it to eat when on the go if I don’t have access to wash facilities.
But it is sold out everywhere or charging crazy prices online. I suppose everyone else has had the same idea but I also expect there are a few panic buyers out there.
Do you think this will all calm down soon?

People are so fucking greedy and selfish

AutumnCrow · 02/03/2020 16:07

That's profiteering. Grim.

Lordfrontpaw · 02/03/2020 16:54

Well we can only hope that they bulk bought and get stuck with it very soon when the panic is over.

Bellini12 · 02/03/2020 17:07

I just thought the big stores could rush through an emergency order but I’ve never worked in retail so am a bit naive I guess!

Yep, none to be found in Gatwick airport north terminal this afternoon! I have anti-bac hand wipes so am using them.

Robuns · 02/03/2020 17:23

@Bellini12 it's not the shops so much as the manufacturers. I used to work in supply chain, and without knowing how long their process takes, I wouldn't be surprised if they started getting the cogs turning to produce more when it first reared its head; and stepped it up a gear when there were cases in Europe. They might not have of course and there might not be any for ages, but hopefully it will become easier to get hold of soon once that readiness trickles down.

Sally99 · 02/03/2020 17:24

I work in London and travel on public transport everyday. I’ve tried everywhere to get some without success.

CeibaTree · 02/03/2020 17:25

We bought enough for the whole family a couple of weeks ago when everywhere was still well-stocked (we haven't got an excess amount though, but enough to see us through a few weeks of commuting). I must admit I did this after reading a preppers thread on MN and I'm glad I did! I guess people have been stocking up for a few weeks now and that's why supplies aren't being replenished - as they have run out!

InvisibleToEveryone · 02/03/2020 17:32

Ooh might pinch the 2 5ltr bottles at work and make a fortune!

ginandbearit · 02/03/2020 17:53

Saw some in Swindon TkMaxx yesterday. £2 a bottle. Maybe I should have grabbed a couple of bottles!

PeonyTruffle · 02/03/2020 17:58

OP where I work, they had some in stock today (I bought one) I would be happy to PM you the website if you wanted to try there

PerspicaciaTick · 02/03/2020 18:10

I wonder how many of the little bottles are imported from China, which might be impacting the supply side as well as the issue of overexcited demand.

SlayB · 02/03/2020 18:31

Can't you buy some online ? Still lots about OP & @Sally99. My in laws both have cancer so a quick google. Also some places you can pre order.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 02/03/2020 19:02

You can also make a mask our of a sanitary towel!

I'm trying to imagine DHs face if I suggest this.

Jojo have this in stock- suitable for kids but kills 99.9% bacteria so can’t be too bad.

sunfloweryy · 02/03/2020 19:19

I think people must be, I buy it regularly but there was only one left in Asda when I went the week before last when normally the shelves are full.

Willow2017 · 02/03/2020 19:39

Mucky Pups £5.00 for 50ml !!!! Thats around 4x normal price for 100ml of gel!

NewYearNewTwatName · 02/03/2020 19:40

The supermarkets round here were mostly out of hand gel a couple of weeks ago. they have been re stocking but it's never there when I go in, just a little sign saying when more will be in.

I few weeks ago I got 4 pockets size ones, one for each of us and 2 bottles to top up the pocket ones.
even then the shelves were starting to look sparse there was only one brand left.

Lordfrontpaw · 02/03/2020 19:41

You haven’t seen the prices on amazon and eBay then! I bought a large one for 3.49 last week in Superdrug and it’s amazon for £60 (it’s not me). Ones that were less than £1 are £8+++

DecemberSnow · 02/03/2020 19:43

On Ebay, I saw ONE 500ml bottle of antibac gel.... For £200 and 142 had already been dold

DecemberSnow · 02/03/2020 19:43

Sold

DecemberSnow · 02/03/2020 19:46

I have health issues, i buy and use the antibac gel and wipes all the time....
So we have afew at home and in the car still, i need more , But cant find them anywhere.

A simple 3 day sickness bug nearly killed me

AutumnCrow · 02/03/2020 19:49

50 ml of hand gel is normally 49p in Asda. It's honestly cheaper to buy vodka.

Sowo · 02/03/2020 19:50

@BearimyJeremy paper towels are better than hand dryers to prevent spread of infection.
