Hand sanitiser sold out everywhere

I’m absolutely NOT in panic mode about the corona virus. However, I thought it may be sensible to get a couple of bottles of hand sanitiser for the kids to use at school and also for me as I have an Invisalign brace and do have to put my fingers in my mouth when out and about to remove it to eat when on the go if I don’t have access to wash facilities.
But it is sold out everywhere or charging crazy prices online. I suppose everyone else has had the same idea but I also expect there are a few panic buyers out there.
Do you think this will all calm down soon?

I usually buy the sterizar hand foam for DD to use at school. Only in norovirus season as I have a sickness bug phobia. It's all gone from Amazon. Nothing in Asda etc near us either.

Because people are panic buying, I've been sensible (not greedy) ordered 100 nappies (4 packs) 12 packs of baby wipes. I've also just put a large bag of pasta and a few extra tins, noodles, crackers and 2 bottles of long life milk in a box and an extra packet of toilet rolls.

I've also got some frozen chicken and mince and some frozen veg in the freezer.

I feel a total twat saying this but I can't bare the thought of not being able to feed my kids. I feel happier knowing if we do get the dreaded virus, or places get locked down we have abit to keep is going.

It makes me laugh how they are saying go to school or work as normal but we might advise you to avoid socialising outside of that. I'd say a school full of kids using the same three toilets and not washing hands enough is going to be more risky than other places.

I really hope all this settles soon.

A couple of colleagues went into town at lunch. We work with the public and we wanted some at our desks. None in 8 shops in two areas of town. None in my local sainsburys or Tesco either. X

Abibranning · 02/03/2020 19:57

I work for a company that uses it all the time, we have stock but our concern is that the manufacturers that we use are currently shut down due to their location and quarantine restrictions. It’s probably a similar situation for the shop suppliers.

Ginfordinner · 02/03/2020 20:11

I work for a wholesaler that supplies antibac gel. We can't keep up with demand.

I use soap and water BTW.

MadisonMontgomery · 02/03/2020 20:19

It’s insane. We have had a patient ask if they could have the bottle we keep on reception, and a care home has asked if we can supply them with some as they are running out & struggling to buy more.

Itstheprinciple · 02/03/2020 21:04

I'm sure a lot of people will have stocked up on the anti bac sanitiser that doesn't have alcohol in and will be happily using it, not realising anti bacterial isn't anti viral.

VanGoghsDog · 02/03/2020 21:06

Sigh. Hand sanitiser is anti bacterial not anti viral. Stock up on bar soap, instead. If you don't have access to wash facilities, bring a bottle of water!!!

Sigh. Some are anti viral, the one I have is. Also high alcohol content kills both viruses and bacteria.

I can't imagine pouring water over my hands on a commuter train, what a ridiculous suggestion.

The best thing to use is the thing you will use.

superram · 02/03/2020 21:14

The corona virus has a lipid coating which is why alcohol will kill it.

Willow2017 · 02/03/2020 21:23

You haven’t seen the prices on amazon and eBay then! I bought a large one for 3.49 last week in Superdrug and it’s amazon for £60 (it’s not me). Ones that were less than £1 are £8++++

I have but this is the norml price not profiteering!

Dowser · 02/03/2020 21:46

Saw on a thread to put listerine in a spray bottle
Have you and old fleec3 blanket. Cut into oblongs . Wet. Put in plastic bag, Few drops of tea tree oil, or dettol Or zoflora.
Keep a spare ziploc bag , put the used ones in there.wash and start again

Hadenoughofitall441 · 02/03/2020 22:28

I’m so glad for my ocd right now, I’m in no way panicking about corona virus however I have ocd for washing hands and have a fear of vomiting so as you can imagine hand sanitizer is my best friend and it just so happens I have a bottle in every bag so have a bit of a hoard at home already and I’d only just restocked in December so that was handy. DP asked me if i had any because he couldn’t find any so he’s pinched a bottle.

BlackeyedSusan · 02/03/2020 23:07

Soapy pieces of wet kitchen roll in a ziplock bag. Less stingy than hand gel. Rub hands for twenty seconds? Would that work?

ClientQueen · 02/03/2020 23:11

It's annoying. I try and always have some in my bag as immunocompromised and at a push I use some on tissue to wipe trolley handles etc too
I've got one small bottle left

VanGoghsDog · 02/03/2020 23:23

I bought a 500ml bottle of Milton hand sanitizer and four small pump bottles, and decanted it so I have one in every bag, plus still loads left in the big bottle.

Was useful visiting my dad on the cancer ward last week as the bloody hospital has run out!!

Anthilda · 02/03/2020 23:24

I purchased 10 bottles to share around my large family, I also stocked up on hand wash, anti bacterial hand wipes, dettol wipes for benches and disinfectant.
I'm always washing my hands but my husband is immune suppressed and my step father has COPD so hopefully everyone will be more vigilant with the handwashing.
I find I'm wiping and spraying everything and a little concerned this could become an obsession.

Bellini12 · 03/03/2020 09:40

If anybody has any joy purchasing today then could you please let me know?

I got some in Sainsbury's Local today. They had plenty. I bought 2 small bottles. Kind of wishing I bought more - but I guess this is the problem if everyone does it.

It has a high ethanol content.

Robuns · 03/03/2020 09:59

Keep checking boots online periodically, I ordered 3 bottles in the early hours yesterday and thought it would be cancelled, and to my surprise just picked it up from store. There seemed to be no limit on how many you could order which was annoying, I got the 3 for me and family (only the 150ml ones) but I bet someone swooped in and ordered loads!

AlfieandAnnieRose · 03/03/2020 10:02

Lots in my local Sainsbury’s. I didn’t bother buying any, I’ll carry on just using soap!

Robuns · 03/03/2020 10:03

What about when you are out and about and there's no sinks about?

Helpmechangemymindsetplease · 03/03/2020 10:07

On the train and have had to eat my croissant without touching it - still it was easier than I thought Grin.

Helpmechangemymindsetplease · 03/03/2020 10:08

(Don’t have any hand sanitizer and in any case if they are anti-bacterial are they any use?)

SlayB · 03/03/2020 10:22

Not Zolflora some of the ingredients benzalkonium chloride 1.922% concentrated perfume compound. Contains 4-tert-butylcyclohexyl acetate and pentamethylheptenone. May produce an allergic reaction.

I found 5 litres of hand gel for just over £16. Decant in bottles as needed. It’s true that alcohol gels don’t kill some viruses – such as norovirus and rhinovirus – but the coronavirus has an envelope structure which alcohol can attack.

twosoups1972 · 03/03/2020 10:45

How do you check the % alcohol? The ones I have at home don’t say on the ingredients list.

GuyFawkesDay · 03/03/2020 10:48

I'm making some with isopropyl alcohol 99%alcohol), few drops of glycerin and some essential oils for nice smell.

Reusable spray bottles and I'm good to go.
