Hand sanitiser sold out everywhere

I’m absolutely NOT in panic mode about the corona virus. However, I thought it may be sensible to get a couple of bottles of hand sanitiser for the kids to use at school and also for me as I have an Invisalign brace and do have to put my fingers in my mouth when out and about to remove it to eat when on the go if I don’t have access to wash facilities.
But it is sold out everywhere or charging crazy prices online. I suppose everyone else has had the same idea but I also expect there are a few panic buyers out there.
Do you think this will all calm down soon?

@RoxytheRexy Check to see if it has 60% alcohol/ethanol - if it doesn't, then it's not much use for viruses

HavenDilemma · 03/03/2020 10:53

@BananaChocolateLump Why???? How utterly selfish

HavenDilemma · 03/03/2020 10:54

@PeonyTruffle Please can you PM me also? I have next to no immune system and my child is very ill. Desperate for just two bottles :(

PeonyTruffle · 03/03/2020 11:05

@havendilemma

I have PM'd you :)

You can buy 99% alcohol and aloe vera gel on Amazon to make your own. I've just ordered.

Lordfrontpaw · 03/03/2020 12:01

99% blimey, I think I drank some moonshine that was about that once...

Dailyjunglegrind · 03/03/2020 12:03

Hand soap is next.. shelves are empty..

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/03/2020 12:42

Would a small spray bottle of diluted Hibiscrub work?

Axlcat · 03/03/2020 12:47

I bought some hibiscrub which is what surgeons use before and after operating. Will this work?!

Axlcat · 03/03/2020 12:47

@PinkSparklyPussyCat crossed post!

Songofsixpence · 03/03/2020 12:59

Ooh, hibiscrub

I accidentally bought 5 litres instead of 500ml when DD’s pony trod on a nail a little while ago

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/03/2020 14:35

I've got it because the cat decided to mutilate his own ear with his claws! I didn't need a large bottle but there was no way I was paying the vet's price for a small one when I could get it on Amazon!

I'm not laughing at the 5 litres when I'm solely responsible for the pasta shortage after ordering 5kg instead of 500g!

Ivysaurus · 03/03/2020 14:41

No joy in Aldi or wilko today, I have added some to my online shop for Thurs so will see if it turns up

TroysMammy · 03/03/2020 14:50

I've found a couple of travel sized bottles of Lidl anti bac hand gel I bought a few years ago. I googled to see how much alcohol it contains and it has been for sale on EBay at £6.99 for 50mls. They only cost 49p to buy. The world has gone mad.

Robuns · 03/03/2020 14:50

A lot of places locally who had no stock and have been having deliveries in today. I've never noticed it before but the ones today all have 70% ethanol on the back or something similar, so maybe stock levels will improve soon as it seems they might be quite new batches?

Cwenthryth · 03/03/2020 14:58

I believe as coronavirus are enveloped (I think?) and chlorhexidine (hibiscrub) has its antimicrobial action on cell membranes, it should be effective? Given sufficient concentration/contact time - honestly in a household environment it won’t be any more useful than just washing your hands with soap and water, I’d have thought. You can’t use it like an alcohol hand sanitiser gel/spray - you’ll just end up with sticky hands, and you don’t really want to leave it on there, it’s horribly drying on skin.

twosoups1972 · 03/03/2020 15:11

My dd has developed some sort of allergy on her hands, they've gone red and blotchy. I've no idea if it's the school hand sanitiser that's caused it or the various ones we're using at home. Anyone know if there's an ingredient that's likely to have caused it?

Yummymummy2020 · 03/03/2020 15:15

I think when they are coming into stock, one or two people are buying the lot instead of just what they need as such and so there is none left then! This seems to be the case every where as a poster above described the same thing happening! There is definitely a lot of panic buying happening!!! I think it will come back in but maybe take a while and maybe the shops will have to limit sales per person? I suppose end of the day they are happy getting the sale if it’s one or fifty people buying them in most cases!

Lordfrontpaw · 03/03/2020 15:17

I’ve ordered rubbing alcohol and aloe Vera get. I’m going to make my own!

PinkJam · 03/03/2020 15:29

Does anyone know if this one is any use?

Cuticura Orginal Anti Bacterial Hand Gel because it’s in stock on Boots website

MarshaBradyo · 03/03/2020 15:30

None round here

Careradvice2019 · 03/03/2020 15:33

I was in boots this morning while my husband was at the bank ,
They had some behind the counter and she said she was limiting to 2 per customer. Fair enough I bought 2
My husband went in after he had been to the bank , she got really shitty asked if we were together, changed her kind to ONE PER HOUSEHOLD and refused to give him any because we were together
I told her we're weren't together and he wanted to purchase his own he wanted some for his car ( i.e. We weren't sharing ) and she pulled a face told us we were together and we weren't having any and it was ONE per household , ( it was 2 per customer 5 minutes before )

How fucking rude ! He only wanted one

Careradvice2019 · 03/03/2020 15:35

My friend who's husband is a firefighter is getting her some from work apparently
I would rather buy mine than deplete from the fire service to be honest although she would probably decant some if I asked but it feels wrong

Cwenthryth · 03/03/2020 15:37

My dd has developed some sort of allergy on her hands, they've gone red and blotchy.
Only my own experience - wash my hands a million times a day for work - but I can get this type of irritant dermatitis just from a combination of dry skin/environment, frequent hand washing or use of alcohol gel esp if not washed off properly & not using hand cream. Doesn’t have to be a reaction to a specific ingredient, just the whole combination of irritant factors being thrown at the skin.

Jobseeker19 · 03/03/2020 15:38
