Hand sanitiser sold out everywhere

I’m absolutely NOT in panic mode about the corona virus. However, I thought it may be sensible to get a couple of bottles of hand sanitiser for the kids to use at school and also for me as I have an Invisalign brace and do have to put my fingers in my mouth when out and about to remove it to eat when on the go if I don’t have access to wash facilities.
But it is sold out everywhere or charging crazy prices online. I suppose everyone else has had the same idea but I also expect there are a few panic buyers out there.
Do you think this will all calm down soon?

Speaking of which - my sister orders her loo rolls online in bulk (maybe she needs to tell me something) and they have run out of loo rolls! Its all they sell...

Coming on to to update that a friend has had some success in her local Co-op with small Carex.
She's picked me one up which was very thoughtful.

I tried mine earlier this week, but every related product was out of stock.

Hugglespuffed · 05/03/2020 11:59

I honestly can't believe someone let that person buy 4 boxes. It isn't as if the shop needed the business as they would have known that the hand gels would sell out really quick anyway.
Sorry but your friend is utterly selfish and that sort of greed is terrible. No one needs 100 bottles.
I have 3 small bottles that I've had lying around for a while so am saving them for when I'm supposed to be catching a flight in a few weeks.

Superdrug Trafford Centre has some this morning.

Methylated spirits is still pretty much available (it's 95% alcohol so you would need to dilute it down to 70) and then use it with aloe vera or some other carrier to make a gel.

Wilko have the 50p handbag size in stock online. Max 6 per customer and £2 click and collect or £5 delivery fee

Our local sainsburys has now been raided, stockpiling has now shifted to the basics of rice, flour, pasta, and feminine hygiene products. I enquires with customer services re: supply .. he’s never seen it quite like this and suggested take precaution but believes restocking will continue in the face of demand/supply.

I have a massive cupboard full of the stuff, by default over past few years, not to prep for anything.
We will be sharing firstly with family, then extended, then friends who need it.

SouthWestmom · 05/03/2020 14:41

Is it just panic or is there a rationale behind the stockpiling?

I have bought some pasta, loo roll, uht milk, cereal, painkillers, pasta sauce, biscuits and cereal and teabags because if I have to stay in with a sick kid or parent I want to have some food for a couple of days. So I'm guilty of buying more and sticking it in a box in the house.

I've just called my dd when I heard about the san pro panic buying and told her to tell her friends to make sure they have some.
Some of her friends are thousands of miles from home, not having seen their families since Christmas and not likely to whilst the virus is still here.
So, I'm one of the people who may have caused a small surge in buying from one or two shops. I'll buy dd from a different shop in our town.

ProfessorHasturLaVista · 05/03/2020 14:54

Boots in my town rationing to one per person. It's Bayliss and Harding, they had run out of Cuticura by 9.45 am. Loads of bar soap on the shelves though.

Pinkerpellosa · 05/03/2020 20:01

This may not be for everyone but there are lovely cloth sanitary towels available know (or you can knit your own from lentils Grin ).
They feel lovely (not plasticy) , look lovely, are better for the environment. Morre costly up front if you're buying but will last for years.( If you make your own from cloth lying around at home they're free)

Kuponut · 05/03/2020 20:20

Aldi who normally have loads of it by the tills are even sold out - I'd picked another bottle of the travel size up the other day before mass panic really descended (my handbag bottle was running low anyway so I needed some).

More worried about bog roll as it's on our shopping list anyway this weekend for a routine shop!

Aurea · 11/03/2020 13:04

You can buy hand gel here. 500 ml bottle plus smaller top up pump bottles of 100ml. It's 60-70% alcohol, tea tree oil and rosemary oil, both of which are anti viral. It smells lovely and doesn't dry your hands out. Mine has just arrived (thank god)

I work in the NHS. The surgery I'm in today has run out of hand sanitiser, antibacterial wipes and dettol. We have no idea when we can get more
