Washington state reports 4 new cases and 3 new deaths in King County https://t.co/eUoE2b20hLL*

3 new deaths taking the total there to 5? Wow, that would suggest that there really are a lot of cases undetected in Washington Sad

Keynote1 · 02/03/2020 19:19

Can anybody answer a couple of questions. If you are at home with just yourself and husband and haven't been out do you need to wash your hands as much, I am doing mine continually to the extent they are dry and sore. Hubby says if no contact with anybody/thing outside a couple of times is fine and I am being obsessive.
I also have a cold, runny nose and slightly sore throat this came on last week, I haven't been away or near anyone with confirmed case, saw a friend who had been abroad (not a listed area) home 9 days before I saw him but I already had the start if cold then but am still worrying. I did ring 111, they were very good and understanding g of my anxiety and just said sounded like a regular winter cold and not to worry, does feel like a regular cold, just want to put it out of my mind- lord knows what I will be like if/ when this gets worse.

RedToothBrush · 02/03/2020 19:19

there is no evidence of a case of the virus being transmitted from child to adult.

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence...

RedToothBrush · 02/03/2020 19:20

Wow, that would suggest that there really are a lot of cases undetected in Washington

Or that the outbreak was rampant in a care home. Which we know to be the case, making this somewhat unsurprising.

DonkeyKong2019 · 02/03/2020 19:21

The Washington cases are a care home. I wouldn't be surprised if most don't make it of the residents

salty78 · 02/03/2020 19:21

@halcyondays my DS has a school ski trip to Lombardy coming up and all the school has said is that they will follow advice from those above. So I take that to mean no money back unless FCO advise against travel and therefore why the school have not made a decision yet as to whether the trip is viable.

persin · 02/03/2020 19:22

About time to get out of the cities maybe

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 19:22

Why has the brighton outbreak stopped dead?

AvocadoOwl · 02/03/2020 19:22

Ah, missed that bit of the update @RedToothBrush. Are all the deaths from the same care home?

Finding it hard to keep up now.

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 19:23

@Keynote1 It does sound like a regular cold. And no you don't need to continually wash your hands. Just wash them after going to the toilet, before you eat, before you cook, and if you have come in from outside.

AbsentmindedWoman · 02/03/2020 19:23

Do any of you go to the gym? If so, are you thinking of not going because of the sharing of equipment?

I have reluctantly decided to not book classes at my beautiful luxurious yoga studio. I love it so much, it makes me happy but I can't justify the extra time spent on the subway and in crowded Manhattan streets.

The studio is warm and obviously people are sweating, so although it's very clean and delightful to be in normally, I don't think it's a great environment right now.

Are you in a high risk group?

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 19:23

I am no loger convinced of overwhelm, and believe the cases coming from outside have been continued, which is what the WHO statement says

Containment is feasible

SansaSnark · 02/03/2020 19:24

I think what the WHO saying is that if this was a flu virus, they wouldn't have expected the containment measures in China to have worked- but they have to an extent, which is obviously a good sign. That doesn't mean that the transmission rate from individual infected individuals isn't higher, though.

Re: Movements of children and shutting schools, I think schools in South Korea have been shut for the past 3(?) weeks following their equivalent of half term. Obviously we can't know if things would be worse if schools had reopened, but this doesn't seem to be controlling the spread of the virus there.

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 19:24

I would definitely not be excessively handwashing if I was just at home without visitors and just my dh, no.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 19:24

I've stopped going @MargotB7

Abraid2 · 02/03/2020 19:25

I think many teens would be quite capable of helping. In the last war they did all kinds of things. Lots of teens have to carry out charitable work or community projects for Duke of Edinburgh and similar schemes. And actually, helping other people is a good way to build up self-esteem and resilience.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 19:26

At home I hand wash after the toilet and before preparing food.

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 19:26

Contained, not continued

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 19:26

CDC confirms Florida's two presumptive #coronavirus cases are positive, Governor DeSantis says, adding that one patient traveled to Italy and the second has not traveled but has underlying health conditions. 'We do anticipate to see more positive cases in the state of Florida.' t.co/crsXefMAyP

MissPoldark · 02/03/2020 19:26

@YoursTunbridgeWells

I should add a disclaimer to what I said, which is that I do have a tendency to catastrophise and I am suffering with anxiety at the moment. However I fear that would be the reality of a worst case scenario.
I have the same fears as you but we mustn’t dwell on that as it’s not helpful at all.

MargotB7 · 02/03/2020 19:27

Are you in a high risk group?

No just a massive worrier and wouldn't want to get it and then pass it onto family. I might not go this week and just exercise at home. I know I'm overreacting though

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 19:27

@Keynote1 Most cases of this virus start with a temperature and then a dry cough. That is how to distinguish it from an ordinary cold. Ordinary colds are runny nose, sneezing and sore throat. You might have other symptoms with a cold, but you pretty always have a runny nose.

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 19:27

Not lots statistically speaking

SansaSnark · 02/03/2020 19:28

@Keynote1

The advice posters given to schools suggest washing hands:
-Before eating
-When arriving home
-After playing sport
-After using a tissue
-After using the toilet
-When arriving at work/school

Corvid-19 is mostly a lower respiratory infection. Symptoms to watch out for are a cough, temperature and breathlessness. Only

MissPoldark · 02/03/2020 19:29

At home I hand wash after the toilet and before preparing food.
Also after blowing my nose or doing any dirty jobs like taking the bin out.
