I don’t know if it’s okay to link to newspapers but for anyone else who’s finding it worrying (I felt even more worried after talking to some relatives who could be quite vulnerable just ignoring any issues. I was trying to gently suggest they get in a few extra bits in case) there’s a detailed guide to how the people currently ill caught it, and how quite a few are related or have links in the most recent live update on The Guardian.

It’s horrible for those with it, or worried they may have it, or their friends and relatives are worried, or who have died, but it was quite reassuring that all of the connections look like they’re being looked into. Not sure who does that investigation, but it feels like there is something going on to try to minimise the spread.

I’m still worried, though I have done enough in getting in extra supplies (and giving to the food bank too, so not being selfish, I don’t think, just trying to be stocked up enough in case).

Wehttam · 01/03/2020 22:25

A lot of Iranian politicians seem to be getting it... either they all had a meeting that infected them all or it’s very wide spread there. Anyone else noticed that too?

OhMargo · 01/03/2020 22:25

Re the Dublin School shut down, the pupil had been on holiday with his family in the (presumably) Red Zone in Italy. Showed symptoms and voila, school shut down for 14 days. Precise, direct and good on them.

duffeldaisy · 01/03/2020 22:28

@littlealexhorne

Someone posted on a local group claiming to be doctor saying that they'd had several cases diagnosed in the past few days.”

That’s appalling. It should be illegal, and maybe is? Isn’t it some kind of malicious spreading of panic, or fraud?
Some people are disgusting.

magicrainbowbeans · 01/03/2020 22:31

Today someone asked me whether I thought they should keep on with plans to travel to x place in Northern Italy in the near future. I said no. They then referred to the media winding everyone up. Sounds like they have made their mind up.

Are you finding people on RL just don't get it.. Or are we on this board simply over anxious and ill end up looking silly for suggesting someone cancels their holiday?

I know I personally won't be getting on a plane any time soon voluntarily. But also willing to be told I'm scare mongering, if I am. I'm prone to self doubt at the best of times.

UC Davis Coronavirus Case Forces 124 Health Care Workers To Self Quarantine

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Possible exposure to a patient before her coronavirus was diagnosed at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento has forced the self quarantine of 124 health care workers including 36 nurses, an umbrella group of nurses unions nationwide announced Friday.

Criticism has surrounded the confirmation process involved in the Solano County woman’s diagnosis.

In a memo to its employees UC Davis administrators said the patient had been treated for several days before being tested for the COVID-19 strain of the coronavirus.

“This patient was transferred to us from another Northern California hospital on Wednesday, Feb 19,” the memo read. “When the patient arrived, the patient had already been intubated, was on a ventilator, and given droplet protection orders because of an undiagnosed and suspected viral condition.”

“Since the patient did not fit the existing CDC criteria for COVID-19, a test was not immediately administered. UC Davis Health does not control the testing process,” the memo continued.

On Sunday, the patient was moved into isolation, but hospital staffers had already been exposed to her.

One hundred and twenty four health care staff at one hospital!!!

That's insane.

Babdoc · 01/03/2020 22:32

We’ve just had our first confirmed case here in Tayside,Scotland. Someone who caught it on holiday in Italy. Waiting to see if they can stop the spread with isolation and contact tracing.

QueenofmyPrinces · 01/03/2020 22:33

Place marking just to keep on track with the threads.

AvocadoOwl · 01/03/2020 22:34

I think tomorrow's U.K. numbers are going to be a hefty jump Sad

RedToothBrush · 01/03/2020 22:36

A lot of Iranian politicians seem to be getting it... either they all had a meeting that infected them all or it’s very wide spread there. Anyone else noticed that too?

The deputy health minister got it and was known to have contact with a number of other senior officials whilst he was still doing a Chemical Ali impression saying "there is no coronavirus here" whilst sweating profusely and coughing.

So it's not exactly surprising nor unexpected.

tinysnickersaremyfavourite · 01/03/2020 22:37

These threads are moving faster than the virus itself Grin I can't keep up!

Wehttam · 01/03/2020 22:37

Magic for some people they won’t believe it until a neighbour in their hotel is being collected by a Hazmat suited ambulance crew. Even then they will play it down. It must be a coping mechanism.

Reading these threads many of us are quite matter of fact and probably accepting of the reality, for others it’s too much to take in. Some people are probably reading the news paralysed with fear totally unsure of what to do. Add in the conflicting news stance and gradual build up of mixed messages and you have an apathetic majority. Let’s hope they are right and it is nothing.

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 01/03/2020 22:37

magicrainbow I spoke to my dm this afternoon and she is also concerned and preparing for a possible 2 week isolation. Just getting in extra soap, some extra meals, tins, pasta etc. Nothing drastic but there was definitely concern there. She's due to go on holiday to Germany this month, and she and my df are not in the best of health so they are watching the news closely.
I think with the lack of hand sanitiser now available, I think more people are concerned but maybe putting on a brave public face? I certainly wouldn't discuss at work how concerned I am and would make it more light hearted.

Nicepud · 01/03/2020 22:39

AvocadoOwl agreed. I'm expecting them to jump too.

TheDword · 01/03/2020 22:39

Hope it’s ok to ask here but does anyone know about the chances of indirect exposure causing people to then develop the virus?

A family member is a beauty therapist and a client recently returned from Milan a few days ago after visiting her mother who has cold/flu symptoms. This lady is not self isolating (no idea why not).

My sister has been staying with therapist family member and is due to visit in a few days. We have a small baby and it’s making me uneasy but I’m not sure if it’s irrational to think she could have caught Coronavirus so indirectly?

Wehttam · 01/03/2020 22:41

I was all over this in January at work. They thought I was a fucking loon. It’s just the flu it’ll die off. Then they saw their first mask wearing Chinese students around town. Sometimes you have to really ring the alarm for them to hear it.

Dylaninthemovies1 · 01/03/2020 22:43

@Babdoc I had no idea you lived up in Tayside. I read your posts sometimes and have a lot of admiration for you. Im also in the Tayside area and very concerned

Thisisworsethananticpated · 01/03/2020 22:43

Are you finding people on RL just don't get it.. Or are we on this board simply over anxious and ill end up looking silly for suggesting someone cancels their holiday?

I am def more worried than people
In RL ! I have some flights booked via Milan , it’s not a holiday but a custody visit and kids really need to go , and I am realising maybe they can’t Sad

But there is NO way I am routing through Milan . I think it’s too risky , also not sure if the new quarantine rule allowed to airport transit ? I mean airports are the place no ?

People in RL think I am
Panicking

But I do not want to be the one that closes the school down

Thisisworsethananticpated · 01/03/2020 22:45

My work also worry me
We are a business that fly people
Around the world , that’s what we do

So yeah . And of course they have emergency meetings tomorrow and it will all be about the revenue

MarshaBradyo · 01/03/2020 22:45

Things will move quickly this week.

mummytothree87 · 01/03/2020 22:46

@Babdoc its all over facebook its someone who stays near ninewells hospital so hopefully they manage to keep it contained

Quartz2208 · 01/03/2020 22:46

With Washington State and the belief it’s pretty wide spread the Italy numbers make more sense I guess it’s only the moderate cases and above now that are appearing

mrshoho · 01/03/2020 22:49

Red, that case in California is incredible. I hope all staff involved are clear. But it is a perfect example of the knock on effect from just 1 infected patient. If god forbid any medical staff have been infected then how many more could they then have spread it to before the patient was diagnosed?

We really do need to protect our front line medics. I saw a video of the drive through swabs being done and they didnt seem to have the most sturdy protection. I was cringing just watching as these are people showing symptoms and presumably been to an at risk zone at some point.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 01/03/2020 22:53

I’ve been dipping in and out of these threads but never posted. I’m in Scotland - first confirmed case tonight. I work in HE in a huge college and am a bit concerned about the amount of people I come into contact with, touching laptops etc, no bins for tissues, often can’t wash my hands for long periods when teaching. I have no underlying health issues, so probably no big deal if I get it - but currently feel like I am coming down with the cold!

FecktheBoss · 01/03/2020 22:53

Dreading the numbers over the next few weeks. Are they still saying close contact is within 2m for at least 15mins?
