@FourTeaFallOut I think that S Korea must have a different criteria for declaring cases serious/critical compared to most other countries, as their numbers of serious/critical patients just don't match up with China/Italy/Japan.

However, I think we know that in Italy there are lots of patients who are in hospital but not considered serious/critical, but will obviously need a level of clinical care.

Doctors and nurses will also have to be dealing with testing patients and the worried well.

Boris on bbc, asked if the nhs will be given everything they ask for to help them cope......replied that “they” (the govt) will do Everything they can.

Doing everything they can is not the same as giving everything asked for.

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 18:09

So are new cases updated tomorrow at 2 pm?

tud41 · 02/03/2020 18:09

@VivaLeBeaver he can hardly say we will do even more than we can, can he? Boris bashing is getting a bit dull here.

Then people loving what NS has said which was essentially the exact same as what Boris has said.

SansaSnark · 02/03/2020 18:11

@alloutoffucks English cases will be. So far, NI and Scotland seem to have been doing separate updates. I'm not 100% sure about Wales.

CrunchyCarrot · 02/03/2020 18:11

Hmmm I just got an email from the online chemist I ordered a 3 month supply of cetirizine from, saying:

Something you've ordered has been more popular than expected and we are working with our supplier to secure more stock as quickly as possible.

So maybe people are buying up antihistamines along with other popular items?

ChipotleBlessing · 02/03/2020 18:12

@SansaSnark There are several worrying things about the Dutch situation. The woman in hospital was admitted to ICU with symptoms that didn’t match the coronavirus, some of the Dutch press have actually reported this as she was in ICU for something else. So it’s possible her coronavirus was hospital acquired. Then two of the cases with unknown transmission were, separately, at a massive carnival event. Dutch healthcare is amazing though, I’d have thought they have a better chance of getting it under control than most places.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 18:13

4 new U.S. cases of coronavirus:

  • First case in New Hampshire
  • 1 new case in Illinois
  • 1 new case in Oregon
  • 1 new case from cruise ship

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 18:13

@tud41 You must have been watching a different broadcast to me then.
Johnson needs to take advice from a pr company about how to present himself if he thinks he said the same thing as Sturgeon.

SansaSnark · 02/03/2020 18:17

@ChipotleBlessing Is that the same carnival event as in Germany?

The idea of hospital acquired coronavirus is pretty concerning.

I don't know much about Dutch healthcare, and I'm definitely not criticising them- it's just concerning to me as a European country that possibly doesn't quite have a handle on the situation right now. I'd hope to see them rolling out a testing scheme similar to the UK one to try and work out how many people in the community have it at the moment- it's one (European) country where I feel really confident in saying there are almost definitely undetected cases.

tud41 · 02/03/2020 18:18

@alloutoffucks yes he may have said it in a different way but the points were the same...

%60 could get it in worst case scenario.
self isolation.
Wash your hands.

That is essentially all the information we need.

FourTeaFallOut · 02/03/2020 18:19

People are still willingly stepping on to cruise ships?

Pebble21uk · 02/03/2020 18:19

De-lurking. Both my partner and I work in (different) schools which feed / have siblings in one where a case has been confirmed today.

My school have been quite pro-active - all classes have had hand gel for a couple of weeks now, parents have been getting regular letters reinforcing guidelines and today have been sent a copy of the WHO poster on handwashing / containment. And my school have taken the decision to cancel all sports fixtures, so children will come into less contact with those from other schools.

Still worrying though!

AutumnRose1 · 02/03/2020 18:20

Will school trips be cancelled, I mean even like day trips to the local museum etc?

FourTeaFallOut · 02/03/2020 18:21

Yeah, thanks @SansaSnark. You'd think they'd have clear uniform categories across the board but I guess that's never going to work under these conditions.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 18:21

boldlygoingsomewhere · 02/03/2020 18:24

Is that the same carnival event as in Germany?

Carnival celebrations are traditional in catholic areas of The Netherlands and in Belgium. Each town usually puts on their own parade/celebration but the larger and more famous ones will attract visitors from outside.

Keynote1 · 02/03/2020 18:24

Apparently cases down to 39, Doctor a false positive as per BBC News.

FourTeaFallOut · 02/03/2020 18:24

I doubt they'd stop school trips within the country any time soon. That being said, I'm holding on to the last installment of the school summer residential until the last
minute.

ChipotleBlessing · 02/03/2020 18:24

@SansaSnark, different to the German carnival event, this one is in the Netherlands. They have closed the entire hospital the woman was in and they have compulsory registration so contact tracing should be easier. There is a potential that there’s already been significant community spread though.

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 18:26

@tud41 As I have already posted on this thread, the role of a leader in a crisis situation is not just to give information. It is to reassure people that the situation is under control. Sturgeon hit the right note of being in control, Johnson did not.
There is lots of disaster management research out there about how important this is.
If it was just saying facts, we could get an AI to do it. It is about more than that. Churchill recognised that during the war with his radio broadcasts.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 18:26

Partial data shows at least 48 new cases of coronavirus and 2 new deaths in France since last night t.co/eUoE2b20hL

MissPoldark · 02/03/2020 18:26

And they’ve been taken to a hospital 400 miles away? (From Devon to RVI in Newcastle) what the...?!

SansaSnark · 02/03/2020 18:27

@AutumnRose1 At the moment, that decision would be down to the individual school. Schools obviously have insurance for trips not going ahead, but this wouldn't pay out at the moment unless the destination closed (as the Louvre has done).

Personally, I think schools should be looking at cancelling foreign trips and residential trips at least, but again this is difficult to do without being able to refund parents. It would be a lot easier if the government published advice telling them not to go (I think the government should do this btw, the risk of quarentine/not being able to get back is problematic on its own).

I also think schools shouldn't be taking children to large events, but again it can be difficult to cancel these at short notice. Again, if the government said (like the the french one) no gatherings above X amount of people, this would help.

I don't think there's much more risk to going on a local trip to being in school though unless there are diagnosed cases in the area.
