If you or a family member is in a high risk group - when is it time to stop going out unless really necessary?

I should really go to the dentist, but that could mean a schedule of several appointments over a few weeks to get a root canal.

Not going to my yoga studio this week though.

I do have another condition which means I need to run to hospital asap if symptoms worsen, and have no real choice.

It is really stressful. My heart goes out to the parents of children who are at risk, it must be so worrying.

There is a part of me that can't quite believe what is happening.

Robuns · 02/03/2020 18:28

Not a Boris fan, but a bit confused where he can pull an undefined amount of money, supplies (some of which are in severe shortage) and additional medical staff out of? Also he is the PM and the frontage for the government, but he has many staff working behind the scenes, he doesn't make every decision in isolation or write his own speeches even.

AvocadoOwl · 02/03/2020 18:28

Do we think the Coronavirus news special on BBC 1 at 7:30pm is going to contain anything new (eg COBRA decisions) or is it just going to be people rehashing everything we already know?

Also I see that Crufts appear to have been consulted following the COBRA meeting and say they are going ahead. So, doesn't appear that any real social distancing measures are going to be announced tomorrow.

AutumnRose1 · 02/03/2020 18:29

Thanks to those who answered

Are children considered super spreaders?

I was thinking that cancelling trips would be one of the easier measures to take to stop the spread.

Choux · 02/03/2020 18:30

the paring down of ranges to essential items, to be stocked in extra-large quantities

Reminds me of when we were all nervous of a no deal Brexit and Gove said 'people will have all the food they need'. Not want. Need.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 18:30

I'm in the same situation with the tooth @absentmindedwoman
I'm part way through a root canal and am so worried about going the dentist.

Robuns · 02/03/2020 18:32

@AutumnRose1 they usually are, hence being offered the flu jab now in winter despite typically being a low risk group (obviously some children aside who are vulnerable). They are one of the worst groups to get it in many ways because their lack of concept of hygiene (depending on the age of course) means that there are so many opportunities for them to pass it on. Most adults optimistically wash their hands often, tissue to nose if sneezing, don't rub their face or put everything in their mouth etc- not the case with little ones.

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 18:32

absent. I think you'd be pretty safe at the dentist with sterile gloved and masked dentist/instruments. Its not a place of the ill, but hospital I'd not be so sure at all

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 18:33

I wouldn't wait around in waiting rooms though, just ask how long the wait is

AutumnRose1 · 02/03/2020 18:34

Robuns thanks, that’s what I thought

BMJ normally needs a log in but their info on the virus is freely available
If that’s useful to anyone

SansaSnark · 02/03/2020 18:34

@AutumnRose1 Superspreaders are people who are more infectious than others due to shedding more pathogens- it's a partly biological thing (although we don't fully understand it). If the average person will infect say 3 people with coronavirus, a superspreader might infect 12.

Children are more likely to infect each other due to poor hygiene and close contact- but that doesn't make them a superspreader, although some children will also be superspreaders.

I totally agree that cancelling school trips would be a good idea- however, the best way to do this would be a top down instruction from government, rather than leaving it up to individual schools. Otherwise, some parents would put a lot of pressure on heads to go ahead with trips.

AutumnRose1 · 02/03/2020 18:37

Just to put my school trip comment in context

In London, children use the bus and tube free. Their visit to the national gallery, British museum etc is free. So those can be cancelled without any financial loss, surely? I see them every day nearly, I work odd hours.

That seems like a really easy non controversial step that might help.

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 18:38

Surely we cant know whether any school in the country will be cancelling trips to museums ?

How could anyone know this?

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 18:39

I think individual parents can decide whats safe or reasonable for their dc

Anothernamechange2020 · 02/03/2020 18:40

Thinking about it from perhaps a different angle (I've been thinking practically all along) is that no-one expected that 2020 would bring the deaths of their relatives. I had a moment of feeling quite sad. People's children (be they grown up) brothers and sisters maybe. It just made me think how delicate everything is.
I know that sounds depressing, sorry to change the tone.

AutumnRose1 · 02/03/2020 18:41

user I was just asking in case any parents had had notes from their schools. It’s a chat thread. I’m not a parent so just asked. Is that okay with you? Well, clearly not.

FelicityFebruary · 02/03/2020 18:42

I said similar about Sturgeon last night allout.

There was a very good communicator on with Piers Morgan today talking about disease control and hygiene, Dr Bahrat Pankhania.

AutumnRose1 · 02/03/2020 18:43

“ Thinking about it from perhaps a different angle (I've been thinking practically all along) is that no-one expected that 2020 would bring the deaths of their relatives.”

Um, anyone with a parent in poor health expects it don’t they?!

Anothernamechange2020 · 02/03/2020 18:43

To add about school trips, we're still going on ours. I phoned the place today to check they had enough soap. I didn't care if I looked bonkers! I've got soap though to take with me if needed.
I can see most of our trip will consist of singing happy birthday!!

MissPoldark · 02/03/2020 18:44

Yes, but under normal circumstances you’d expect to be able to visit them in hospital, see them before they pass away and give them a proper funeral.

Blueberryham · 02/03/2020 18:44

I think Boris could do a lot more to reiterate social distancing. No hand shakes any more etc. At the moment you feel a bit OTT refusing to handshake but if this was reiterated by pm it would be easier to enforce

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 18:45

Well yes I see, but all I'm saying is how can we know.

I mean you literally asked Will school trips be cancelled, I mean even like day trips to the local museum etc?

Its a busy thread and some things just cannot be known, and you asked something that can't be answered realistically can it.

Anothernamechange2020 · 02/03/2020 18:45

@Autumnrose, yes I agree. Sorry, what I meant was maybe younger people who were otherwise fit. But it's also sad for older people. I was referring to otherwise 'fit' people.

littlealexhorne · 02/03/2020 18:47

British Airways are cancelling 226 flights from 16-28 March to destinations including New York, Italy, France, Austria, Belgium, Germany, Ireland and Switzerland.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-51713192

Not sure why this isn't starting until the 16th though?

AvocadoOwl · 02/03/2020 18:47

Bruce Aylward said there was no evidence of children being super spreaders, findings so far seem to suggest that children have a fairly minor role to play in spread. He said work studying this was ongoing though and the research done to date wasn't conclusive.
