Shared by a journalist on twitter:

The CDC has stopped disclosing the number of Americans tested for coronavirus.

On the left is how the website looked last night. On the right is what it looks like now, with the testing info removed.

The lack of testing is a scandal.

This is the coverup. t.co/za5w9dkEKq

Clearly if there's not a financial issue and trips could easily be rescheduled, cancelling would be a sensible step. The school I teach at is pretty rural, so any trips are booked well in advance and include transport such as coaches which can't be cancelled after a certain date, which makes them harder to cancel.

VivaLeBeaver · 02/03/2020 18:48

@tud41 I'm not actually bashing Boris. Thought it was a clever answer. But that the devil is in the detail. He knows the nhs might need/want more than can be given. Either due to money, staffing, resources.

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 18:48

Might it be to give returners chance to return?

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 18:50

That was to little littlealex on ba flights

SansaSnark · 02/03/2020 18:51

@ofwarren I agree- the US is another country where IMO it's pretty clear there is community transmission going on and the number of cases being reported don't reflect the true numbers.

Forcing people to pay for testing (regardless of whether the bill will be eventually scrapped or whatever is a scandal).

People will also be put off if they know they'll get a big bill for being isolated.

Trump, even more so than any world leader, clearly doesn't have a clue. Apparently he's urged scientists to develop a vaccine faster- it's not a case of them not being bothered! Making a vaccine for a new virus and testing it properly takes the time it takes for a reason!

Jrobhatch29 · 02/03/2020 18:51

Did anyone watch the sky news update at 6pm suggesting the mortality rate will end up being less than 1%?

oneteen · 02/03/2020 18:53

It looks like it's going to be a warmer than usual spring - hopefully, if the science is correct COVID 19 will show some seasonality although not guaranteed because there is no evidence to state it will react like other viruses...

Worriedmom2020 · 02/03/2020 18:54

Can I have some advice please?

This week my DD has two trips. 1 to a place of worship and another to a huge city centre market inline with the topic for this term.

I don't want to send her due to sibling with heart issue and asthma.

Wwyd, please?

YoursTunbridgeWells · 02/03/2020 18:54

@MissPoldark I am with you. If I have to loose my DF then I would hope to have time to say goodbye, time for a proper funeral. If he were to die from CV then we wouldn't be allowed to visit him - so no goodbyes and he'd likely be in a mass cremation and I wouldn't be able to have a funeral - maybe some virtual event?

That's what freaks me - if I have to die from this, I won't be able to say goodbye to my children or my husband. OK, if I got squashed by a bus, then same thing. But knowing you're dying and not being able to say goodbye is horrific.

I also really worry about CV orphans. It's what I fear the most - that my children loose us both.

FourTeaFallOut · 02/03/2020 18:54

Less than 1% in this country or less than 1% worldwide?

Plantpotpot · 02/03/2020 18:54

So earlier there was a post regarding the WHO report which said of ALL the cases, 2.4% were aged under 19 and of that 2.4% 0.2% died (if I read it correctly) and that there is no evidence of a case of the virus being transmitted from child to adult.
This is good news!!!!!!!!! Why can’t people also try and look at the positive posts? Or do we just want to all feel doomed?

mintyneb · 02/03/2020 18:54

nettletea I'm just back from a fairly uneventful hospital clinic. All the team put on aprons before coming into our room which is something new although I think it may be a new policy this year anyway for improved infection control.

There was no sense of panic from the staff and we were the ones to raise the subject of the virus with the consultant. She just told us to follow the guidelines and obviously give them a call as well as follow the more formal route if we felt there was a need to worry or self isolate.

She did suggest that having some co-amoxiclav to hand would be good as they would medicate in the way they would for cold already.

Anyone else reading this, this was our experience of a cystic fibrosis clinic today in one of the leading European hospitals for the condition. I guess we just take all the right precautions and hope for the best like everyone else!

AbsentmindedWoman · 02/03/2020 18:54

@ofwarren urgh it's a pita isn't it. I fucking hate dental work at the best of times! Are you thinking of going?

@usernameishistory thanks, I think that's a good point that dentists aren't typically full of very sick people. Maybe I should try to go this week.

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 18:54

No surprise wrt the testing in the US. The whole system is a money soinning scandal that doesn't centre the patient, no more so bloody evident than in the handling of covid19

Trump is a disgrace what a farce him calling it fake news/hoax...and yet!

He's in the high risk group hopefully he'll be going to ground and letting real people take over

SansaSnark · 02/03/2020 18:54

@Jrobhatch29 I don't see how anyone can know that now. There's so many unknowns at the moment- although we have a better idea of how to treat things than in the first cases in China, we also have to contend with things like older populations (and more underlying health conditions) in Western Europe, and the virus spreading to countries with a lack of proper health care.

We also don't know the long term prognosis for people who have been ventilated etc. There was a patient given a lung transplant in China yesterday- we've got no information about why that was done, but clearly that's not going to be a viable option for very many people.

Iusedtobeapartygirl · 02/03/2020 18:55

Worried Mum, talk to the school and explain your concerns.

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 18:56

There should be a comma in there, as I didn't mean to say 'hopefully Trump' is in the high risk group.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 02/03/2020 18:57

@Worriedmom2020 my DD has a trip to a London theatre capacity 2k. I am all over the place with this. Tourists will no doubt be there from all over the world. I don't want her to go but other parents and DH think I am overreacting.
I am tempted to email the school and ask them what CV risk mitigation factors they have put in place and suggest this information needs to be provided such that parents can make an informed decision. I don't believe they are using public transport but have a hired bus. If the Tube is involved I will be apoplectic.

AvocadoOwl · 02/03/2020 18:58

@Worriedmom2020 if you don't want to send her don't send her. We all need to do what lets us sleep at night and we all have different levels of risk (and comfort with that level of risk!).

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 18:59

Why not just have your dc called in sick on the day if cv preps fall short?

halcyondays · 02/03/2020 19:00

Schools are in a difficult position with foreign trips. Some NI schools cancelled ski trips because there were close to the affected areas but I don’t think they were places that the government has advised against travel to, as yet. So they may not be able to get their money back. But of course the nearby places could easily end up in quarantine soon so you can understand why they don’t want to risk going ahead.

AbsentmindedWoman · 02/03/2020 19:00

The part about flights being cancelled is good because it's needed, but also sobering for those of us abroad.

We can't leave the United States (my wife is from here) realistically. But the window to go home could be closing for quite some time.

SansaSnark · 02/03/2020 19:01

@Worriedmom2020 If you've decided you don't want your DC to go on the trips, rather than keeping them off school in general, then just don't send them in on those days, surely? Either tell the school why, or lie and say they are ill- even if they are put down as unauthorised, IME you're unlikely to face any issues for just 2 odd days of unauthorized absence.

@Plantpotpot I don't see a death rate of 0.2% for under 19s as a good thing. This is far higher than the flu for that age group, for example. I also don't see why we should be trying to invent good news about something that in general is not good news for the world.

FourTeaFallOut · 02/03/2020 19:01

there is no evidence of a case of the virus being transmitted from child to adult.

Really? Does anyone have a link or source for this information?
