Is anyone stock piling yet for coronavirus. I got a few bottles of Calpol this afternoon and some ibuprofen but wondering if I should stock kitchen cupboards. Daily Mail is getting me into a panic !!

I have a coupled weeks stuff in. Just basics.

Although I'm about to become a derisive figure on Mumsnet: I gave away a bottle of gin I was gifted at Xmas. I can take it or leave it.

It's always sensible to be stocked up , coronavirus aside I worry about getting snowed in this time of year . Or what if your household comes down with normal flu or something else

I was in a supermarket near a city centre earlier, shelves looked fine, but I overheard one assistant reporting back on a list to another, he said they did not have any more spam for the shelves. His colleague wasn't surprised and said something about the supply chain.

I have picked up some extra things in case we are ill and stuck in, e.g. flour, butter, milk to freeze, beans, but spam wasn't on my list. Am I missing something, anyone think this is useful to have a few tins of spam?

@chocmallows

I've done a very small box of longlife stuff. I've put in on top of our fridge. It's two bottles of longlife milk, 2 tins of corn beef, pasta, spaghetti, tinned tomatoes, biscuits and some noodles.

We don't usually eat corn beef from a tin or Noddles etc. But because I've got small kids I've made sure we can eat for a couple of weeks if people panic buy or we get I'll. I've also added two extra bags of frozen veg and chicken to the freezer. I feel like I can now do

Tomato pasta
Chicken pasta
Corn beef stew
Vegetable pasta
Aswel as noodles and stuff for dinner if we can't get hold of bread etc.

I think they should have maximum buy of most things to prevent people over buying. I have a lady from Australia on my FB and they have ran out of bog roll in most shops.

People are fearing the unknown. There has been huge amounts of cases in China but it's still nowhere near a million. When you think how huge their population is. That's kind of the case on all countries. Let's hope the UK is kept to a minimum with it too.

Although it's typical of this country to do anything until it's too late. Maybe all schools should close for a week and a deep clean. See how many cases come out after a week.

It also annoys me Boris saying bigger classrooms etc to cope with staff being off sick. Well I'm sorry but if my DD teacher goes off with coronavirus then my child is not going near school!

Also saying to encourage people to work and go to school but avoid socialising. So does this virus not target workers and students lol! Surely kids can take work home for a week. If they act now maybe things won't have to get bad.

What about kids with asthma etc too. Sorry I've gone off subject abit. I think the media is putting fear into everyone aswel.

Thanks @Cookiecrumble887 I have never cooked with corn beef before - can it be used instead of mince or better thrown in with soup?

If fresh meat is unavailable I am thinking it is worth getting a few cans in now, as long as I know what to do with it!

BIWI · 03/03/2020 14:51

Corned beef hash, @Chocmallows!

BIWI · 03/03/2020 14:52

corned beef hash

Cookiecrumble887 · 03/03/2020 15:01

Yes crumble it into a stew or as make corn beef hash.

Can even have it with chips or in a sandwich in these situations.

It's definitely worth having a few things extra to ensure you can whip something up. I usually use fresh meat but corn beef stew is actually yummy lol

Cookiecrumble887 · 03/03/2020 15:03

Corned beef that should say. Not concentrating sorry lol.

Fried spam with mash and beans is nice too. we had it as kids

Chocmallows · 03/03/2020 15:07

Thanks Cookie and BIWI, I will pick a few cans up as looks like a useful option if meat supply chains are slower due to virus issues.

viccat · 03/03/2020 15:17

I stocked up on some basics after Ocado emailed everyone last week to say the demand for delivery slots was unusually high. I work from home and I'm not particularly worried about catching the virus myself but wouldn't want to be stuck without food/loo roll etc. I also saw someone on TV say there may be shortages further down the line (due to supply chain/manufacturing issues overseas) and one of the things that may run out is tea. Shock

My current stockpile is mostly loo roll, porridge oats, the two kinds of non-dairy milk I like and extra pasta and jars of pesto... Oh and cat food. And chocolate, although that might not last very long. Grin

glueandstick · 03/03/2020 17:19

The corona stockpile of chocolate bars has taken a hammering.

Oops.

Shakermaker8 · 03/03/2020 20:29

I’ve stocked up on 28 bottles of Corona.
