Is anyone stock piling yet for coronavirus. I got a few bottles of Calpol this afternoon and some ibuprofen but wondering if I should stock kitchen cupboards. Daily Mail is getting me into a panic !!

Apparently it’s not as big news in the USA. Not even the main story over there. Make of that what you will. The cynic me thinks the media here are whipping everyone into a frenzy to the and divert from the Brexit mess. The DM even tried to blame the EU for the spread of the disease in Europe the other day!

The DM is absolute worst. In the last few days alone they’ve published stories claiming the Olympics will be cancelled, that the premier league will be suspended, that the six nations will be cancelled and yesterday they said that Hyde Park will be used as a giant morgue!

All of this without any real source. They seem to be fucking revelling in it.

ManonBlackbeak · 29/02/2020 10:14

Willow’so your place of employment doesn’t have toilets hand washing facilities then?

Mosquito bites killed more people globally yesterday than Coronavirus.

  1. Don’t read The Daily Hate Mail.
  2. Practice good hand hygiene - honestly, this really will protect you from so many common germs & bugs.
  3. Buy a lottery ticket, your odds are on par with contracting this.

There are people with severe anxiety in our society and these threads feed that fear. At best they are very unhelpful and at worst completely irresponsible.

Willow2017 · 29/02/2020 10:22

That is rather assuming that the entire country is effected, rather than just individuals isolating at home.

It only takes a few people to be off for the supply chain to fail. Why are supermarket staff immune to diseases?
Surely having a few extra staples at home means you dont have to rely on anyone. Why is it so difficult to.understand that buying a couple of extra things each week isnt decimating the shelves but if tshtf in any particular area the panic buying will? Supermarkets dont have mega warehouses of stock its a jit supply scheme.

Lets face it it only takes a reasonable amount of snow in this country for people to start piling thier trolleys sky high. People who have a buffer at home dont need to join the crazies.

TabbyCatPaws · 29/02/2020 10:23

I'm off to Tesco later. Be interesting to see whether any signs of stockpiling, empty shelves etc

ManonBlackbeak · 29/02/2020 10:24

What about trains, buses etc? There will always be people travelling or them carrying germs. Do you panic so much over norovirus or flu or the common cold?

I work with kids. We practice good hygiene all the time. But constantly hand sanitising is probably veering on OCD territory.

WhereverIMayRoam · 29/02/2020 10:26

Of course they’re revelling in it Manon, it’s what they do! Quite honestly I wish I could self isolate for a few weeks just to get away from the idiotic conspiracy theories and the dramatic wailing and frothing of my colleagues!

People need to take sensible precautions and follow the advice that’s being given. There’s no need to run around buying all the anti-bac gel you can find but it’s perfectly reasonable to acknowledge that any of us could be instructed to self isolate and have some essentials in. Some extra toilet paper, pasta and cheese etc in this weekend’s shop won’t wreck the supply chain.

Willow2017 · 29/02/2020 10:29

Willow’so your place of employment doesn’t have toilets hand washing facilities then?

Of course it does but i dont have a toilet next to the checkout! Do you think i can spend 10 minutes going all the way to the staff area and back every time someone sneezes on thier shopping or coughs over the till? You wouldnt believe how gross people can be. Using hand gel a few times a day is better than nothing. I can wash my hands when i go on the one and only break i get per 8hrs!
We don't all work in a place where we can wander around back and forwards to the loo several times a day if we feel like it.

No need to panic buy, it causes more harm than good. Shopping can be delivered to or near your home. If people are sensible and don't stockpile, shortages are much less likely.

Willow2017 · 29/02/2020 10:38

Exaggerating much?
Who mentioned "constantly sanatizing" ?

Typucal mn make it up as you go along so you can criticize and feel superior.

Skyejuly · 29/02/2020 10:40

How can shopping be delivered if drivers are I'll?

Oysterbabe · 29/02/2020 10:44

We've bought enough store cupboard things that we could go a couple of weeks without needing to shop. It's just sensible imo.

ManonBlackbeak · 29/02/2020 10:51

Yet you willow insinuated that I probably didn’t have job because I’m not getting getting as worked up you...

Is that not a criticism as well?

Willow2017 · 29/02/2020 10:52

No need to panic buy, it causes more harm than good. Shopping can be delivered to or near your home. If people are sensible and don't stockpile, shortages are much less likely.

Nobody is panic buying!!
A couple of extra things over the last few months isnt panic buying!

Willow2017 · 29/02/2020 10:58

I am not worked up. I never used to use hand gel but now i have an auto immune condition and am on heavy duty meds i dont want to risk getting ill from grotty customers.

I cant pay bills if i am off work ill.

Moomin8 · 29/02/2020 10:59

Buying enough to have back up is sensible. Buying way more than you need is selfish and just makes panic buying more likely.

Pppppickupapenguin · 29/02/2020 11:07

It's not the preppers that will be panic buying. They'll already be organised for a last minute lockdown, as happened in Italy, or being too ill to leave the house.
It's those saying "It's just flu" that will be fighting over the last mint of milk or loaf of bread.

Pppppickupapenguin · 29/02/2020 11:08

*pint

I'd imagine minty milk to be gross.

FlamingoAndJohn · 29/02/2020 11:40

Purely to be sensible I've got an extra large bag of pasta, a few tins and large bottles of water and 2 bottles of long life milk incase we get trapped at home.

And this is the question. Are people doing something like this, adding an extra bag of pasta, stock piling or panic buying? The person doing the shopping most likely thinks not but then if everyone does that does it cause a problem?
And why buy water?

janemaster · 29/02/2020 11:49

I have bought some extra tins and pasta, and will be trying to keep our stock of food up. I don't care if some see it as selfish. I want us to have enough food for at least 2 weeks.
I agree it will be those saying its only flu who will be panic buying.

Moomin8 · 29/02/2020 12:14

It's not selfish to have a months worth of food - what is selfish is buying £800 worth of food for one person which is what one person I know has done.

Femail · 29/02/2020 12:28

No not currently but may put a few bits back tomorrow before the supermarket opens Grin as I work in one

Femail · 29/02/2020 12:32

Also I agree with the amount of grotty customers I've seen and come near me eg coughing or sneezing without covering there mouth bloody disgusting.
