Is anyone stock piling yet for coronavirus. I got a few bottles of Calpol this afternoon and some ibuprofen but wondering if I should stock kitchen cupboards. Daily Mail is getting me into a panic !!

Gin.
It's payday tomorrow though so I'll do the usual shopping and but more gin and ginger ale to go with it.

BrieAndChilli · 01/03/2020 09:56

I’ve stocked up, I’m less worried about actually getting the virus but more that if it does kick off and quarantine becomes a thing I won’t then have to rush out to try and stock up with that the hoardes if people that haven’t. I’ll try and grab some milk bread and fresh veg/fruit if I’m able to.

BrieAndChilli · 01/03/2020 09:58

Hopefully electric/Netflix etc will still be fine so if holed up for 2 weeks we will catch up on shows/play board games/play video games/sort out cupboards/deep clean/touch up paint etc all the stuff we are normally too busy to do!

janemaster · 01/03/2020 10:01

Talking to a friend yesterday about this and she already has a month's store of food. I went to the supermarket and chatted to the cashier who said it has been "mental" as it has been so busy. So although the shelves looked okay apart from no antibac spray, there were clearly more people buying foods.
I have stocked up a little bit. So extra pasta, stir in sauces, toilet rolls. Just wanted to be able to last 2 weeks if we were quarantined.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 01/03/2020 10:01

I generally dont have full cupboards and ive only got a little freezer ...big fridge Grin

I don’t work much and if i needed to pop out somewhere for tea its not a biggie

But i will make sure that my freezer and cupboards are better stocked...and i think i will keep doing it, I remember when it snowed badly quite a few years ago and the local shops i could walk to were running out of things I WANTED...masses of stuff i didnt want Grin

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 01/03/2020 10:02

brie

Dh will tidy the garage and attic...he’s got it all planned

Mintjulia · 01/03/2020 10:12

It depends what you mean by stockpiling. I have extra 3 packets of Nurofen, 3 of panadol, an extra bottle of Calpol to deal with a high temperature
Plus an extra kilo of rice, pasta, and white beans, some tinned tomatoes, uht milk, some extra veg, fish & sausages in the freezer. Loo roll, toothpaste, soap.
Enough to last two weeks for two of us.

janemaster · 01/03/2020 11:45

Government has just announced that it could be forced to shut down entire cities. Now there will be panic buying.

janaus50s · 01/03/2020 11:54

Online shopping from grocery store will work

janemaster · 01/03/2020 11:57

Maybe, but I am not relying on it. Sorry but I simply don't trust the Government.

MarshaBradyo · 01/03/2020 12:01

It’ll prompt more people if they do shut towns but atm it’s just a tool they’ve kept in the table and not ruling out.

janemaster · 01/03/2020 12:04

But simply saying it will prompt panic buying.

MarshaBradyo · 01/03/2020 12:09

Maybe, I’d still call it stocking up as I saw on Saturday. Loads of people, busier than usual and a couple of items out of stock.

Panic buying to me is when you see carnage and loads of empty shelves, don’t think we’re there yet.

AlternativePerspective · 01/03/2020 12:18

No, it’s ridiculous scaremongering. It’s a mild virus for the most part, not the apocalypse.

Given the mortality rate is estimated at about 1% globally and very much depends on the state of medical facilities available wherever you get it the media need to stop being so hysterical over this.

The only stocks I might be getting in are the ones from the stock market which has taken a hit and which will come back in the next few months and make me money.

janemaster · 01/03/2020 12:21

@alternativeperspective WHO are saying that about 15% of people who get it need to be hospitalised. Yes for babies and young kids it is a mild virus. But for a lot of people it is anything but mild. 15% of people do not need to be hospitalised for flu.

speakout · 01/03/2020 12:26

janemaster

Do you have a link to that 15% figure?

AlternativePerspective · 01/03/2020 12:30

How many people have died from the flu since the 20 who have been diagnosed with Corona in the UK, none of whom are dead?

And the WHO are talking about the world so that takes into account people in 3rd world countries who are already in poor health/malnourished and who are easily susceptible to bad side effects from any illness. The UK is not the 3rd world, whatever the Daily Mail would have people believe.

It will also take account of people who know they have underlying illnesses and who will go to hospital as soon as they develop symptoms. If they are known to have underlying medical conditions then they will likely be hospitalised if they present with symptoms. That doesn’t mean that 15% of people will be so ill that they need hospitalising.

I have a serious underlying illness as a result of the flu 3.5 years ago ironically. If I catch the virus there’s a fair chance I could end up in hospital or worse. But there’s also a chance I might not. But if I catch it I will certainly be speaking to cardiology who might insist I come in anyway, in which case I could become a statistic.

But I have no intention of panicking over something which might never happen.

SecretWitch · 01/03/2020 12:33

We have a well stocked pantry but I’ve ordered more antibacterial wipes, bleach and soap. I took a count yesterday and seem to be good with acetaminophen and cold remedies. I do think I will get in some more loo and kitchen roll.

I am not panicking but it never hurts to be well prepared.

I am wondering how people who don’t have access to ready cash are feeling about all these recommendations though. It is not cheap to gather up all these supplies.

janemaster · 01/03/2020 12:34

It was on this site somewhere.

www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries

speakout · 01/03/2020 12:35

AlternativePerspective

Exactly. That 15% figure is rubbish. It means that 15% of the people who develop illness severe enough to visit a doctor may require hospitalisation.
We don't know how many people have the virus, many people will never seek medical help because their illness is not serious enough.
Right now my DD is in bed with a sore throat, shivers and aches.
Chances are she will be well in a couple of days, probably some kind of virus, maybe even Corona, but not something she will even tell her GP about.
THousands of people have cold and mild flu like symptoms without notifying the health authorities.

FlamingoAndJohn · 01/03/2020 12:36

It depends what you mean by stockpiling. I have extra 3 packets of Nurofen, 3 of panadol, an extra bottle of Calpol to deal with a high temperature

I call that stockpiling. It’s not extreme but it’s more than you need to get from one shop to the next.

Sparklingbrook · 01/03/2020 12:58

DH has informed me we are taking a trip to the cash and carry this afternoon. Good opportunity for some major stockpiling, I will see what I can find. Grin Might get one of those huge gateaus to see us through.

BIWI · 01/03/2020 13:20

Don't forget the gin @Sparklingbrook Grin

Sparklingbrook · 01/03/2020 13:23

Oh yes-I wonder if I can get a catering pack of gin @BIWI. Shock Grin

SusanneLinder · 01/03/2020 13:55

You don't need to stockpile. It is sensible to have 2 weeks worth of food in,just in case. Many people shop fortnightly anyway. I have 2 weeks of food in my cupboards/freezer ,so if there is a lockdown, I won't be adding to the panic buying that would inevitably take place. We could probably survive a bit longer if necessary.
