Conflict in the Middle East

Thoughts to the Jewish community in the UK

Ihatetomatoes · 02/10/2025 19:38

There is a massive rise in anti semitism in the UK and other countries. Jewish people here have nothing to do with the conflict in Gaza, nothing at all.

The rise in anti semitism is disgusting.

Sending thoughts to the victims, their family and friends. No one should feel terrorised in the UK. People should feel safe here.

My heart goes out to the Jewish community and anyone affected by this horrible attack. What has the UK become? It’s disgusting that this could happen & against a backdrop of rising antisemitism. Normal, decent people in the UK support the Jewish community & we’re so sorry this has happened.

HellsBalls · 02/10/2025 21:08

The government recognizing Palestine as a state has emboldened the antisemites even more.

This. ^ The Government do NOT speak for me I can tell you, and I am furious that Starmer has presented the UK as a country that recognises Palestine as a state. Hmm

@Ihatetomatoes I agree. Thoughts go to the Jewish Communities. ❤

The anti-Jewish march going on is dreadful. Sad

Is anyone else dreading 7 October? it's less than a week away.

Those pretending they can't see what's happening here in the UK are utterly beneath contempt in their malevolent arrogance.

But pride goes before a fall, and I think they are beginning to piss off people who wouldn't normally notice or care.

I agree. The marches have been a big presence but the anger and disgust felt by the majority is real and growing.

Lunalara · 02/10/2025 21:36

Once again, a very all or nothing approach to these threads. I am disgusted by today’s act and even those who chose today to protest for Palestine. I feel awful for the victims and they deserve all the respect in the world, as do other Jews who may currently live in fear. I am “pro Palestine” though and this will not change that. I am not going to let some sick individuals represent what is overall a good cause.

Serious question @Lunalara . What have all the pro Palestine marches achieved? They've gone on for months, years now. I don't think they've made a bit of difference to events in Gaza. I do think they've frightened and intimidated a lot of people. And arguably they've emboldened people like today's shooter to see British Jews as legitimate targets.

GentleSheep · 02/10/2025 21:48

I've just been watching Tousi TV showing some of the pro-Palestinian demonstrations going on in London - absolutely appalling. I fully support the Jewish community.

Shooter? 😳

My thoughts and sympathies are with all Jewish people in the UK. Please know that so many of us value and respect you and are horrified by this attack.

I’m just going to quote @Dianaofthelakeofshiningwaters , who said it better than I can tonight.

It takes a lot to anger the British. We have never been particularly revolutionary by nature (unlike, say, the French!). But I can feel the mood changing from laissez-faire to "Something must be done about this."

itsraining2024 · 02/10/2025 21:50

Today’s actions by a mentally unwell man were abhorrent and disgusting. I’m not sure how it relates to people protesting for the genocide being disgusting.

Strictlycomeparent · 02/10/2025 21:51
  1. Appalling attack that can have no possible justification. I send support to any Jewish people feeling scared. There can be no space for antisemitism in Britain.

  2. I’m heartbroken about Gaza and the actions of the Israeli government.

Those two things should only be held together by the common thread which is all humans, everywhere have worth and dignity and should be safe to live their lives in peace. This applies as much to every person wherever they live and whatever faith they practice or ethnicity they are.

Lindos1 · 02/10/2025 21:59

I just feel total despair & rage at what has happened today.
Entirely predictable.
Our leaders have turned this country into an absolute cesspit, & emboldened anti- semites.
For shame.

Lunalara · 02/10/2025 22:01

We do not know tangibly what the protests, but it is entirely possible that governments would have ignored Gaza if people hadn’t protested. The reason I say this is because it took many months before many took semi official stances, such as recognising a Palestinian state. Again, it’s impossible to know for certain.

Secondly, there is an element of people being able to voice genuine concern about what they see as a huge injustice. So many people in Palestine are losing their lives, and seeing videos of bombs going off in Gaza made a big part of our population (among others) horrified. Many people who join these protests want to feel like they are not evil for thinking this is wrong, as some media sources are making it look anti semitic purely for thinking that bombing land is wrong.

Unfortunately, there are issues with genuinely anti semitic people joining these causes. This is somewhat inevitable due to the parties involved.
However, to get rid of these protests would eliminate the voice of most people there who say that Netanyahu is the biggest obstacle for peace.

This is the objectively correct and fair response.

Israel's Netanyahu and his cabinet have done a brilliant job of creating fear, horror and bad feeling against Jews across the diaspora by their actions against the Palestinian people.

If there are people in the world who wish Jews harm (and I don't condone that) then blame Israel's government.

Everyone should be able to live in peace and safety. Jewish and Palestinian. Wherever they reside.

Craftysue · 02/10/2025 22:09

BBC showed an interview with two Jewish teenagers. At the end one of the boys said " What have we done wrong?" I just found it incredibly sad

How about actually blaming the people who wish Jews harm?
What do Jews living across the world have to do with the actions of the current Israeli government?
And what about all those people who wished Jews harm in the past, long before the current government was in place?

It wasn't a mentally unwell man, he's been confirmed as an Islamist terrorist

BeepBoopBop · 02/10/2025 22:17

Words of sympathy are not enough. ALL pro-Palestinian demonstrations should be suspended. This is a Christian country where all races, creeds and colours have been made welcome. If you can’t play nice FUCK OFF to where your values thrive.
Tolerance stops when murder begins.

I agree with your points, but what I'm saying is that Netanyahu has whipped up hatred or at least resentment over the past 2 years. I think he has done Jewish people around the world a huge disservice by putting them in danger through his actions. People will want to retaliate. They shouldn't do so of course, but Israel has fostered bad feeling through its persecution of the Gazans and destruction of their homes and families.

If my government committed atrocities against a country or a people, then I would feel afraid of repercussions against me from those affected because of my nationality or affiliation. It's wrong that it happens, but it seems causative to me.

AgnesMcDoo · 02/10/2025 22:39

It’s tremendously sad.

mids2019 · 02/10/2025 22:41

I defy anyone to separate this horrendous killing from the increasing hostile rhetoric of those protesting about Gaza. March after march has been filled with hate filled vitriol levelled against the Israeli and Jewish community. The voices of hate have remained unchecked and we see the consequences today. The fear the News in community must feel on a daily basis must be unimaginable and this is on the streets of Britain.

New hate has to stop and we need strong leadership that is willing to call out terrorism and meet terrorism with strength where ever it lies.

Thoughts to those killed and injured during the most holy day of the Jewsih calendar. May they test in peace and let us never let terror win.

Cece92 · 02/10/2025 22:43

It’s horrific. Just let people be. In a place they feel most a peace in and safe! I can’t get my head around any of it. My thoughts also with the Jewish community x

Well the issue with your nonsense here is that ‘Judaism’ isn’t a nationality. So even if you hate the Israeli government and even if you want Israelis pushed into the sea… that still has f all to do with a few Jewish people in Manchester.

this sort of ‘well antisemitism is a shame but they brought it on themselves’ is exactly where it started in Germany.
