Maybe the Canaanites were a peace-loving bunch farmers, traders, and city-builders just trying to get on with their lives in what’s now the Middle East - probably would have gone to Glasto now in the Green Fields. They had a rich culture, spoke early Semitic languages, and were even ahead of the curve with one of the first alphabets But then, according to the Bible, the Israelites turned up and either drove them out or wiped them off the map - because of Egyptian skullduggery and God telling them to - cheery stuff.
Of course, relying on the Bible for accurate historical reporting is a bit like using a fairy tale as a travel guide. Archaeologists now think the Canaanites weren’t destroyed at all, but just gradually merged into the surrounding culture so they didn’t vanish, they just rebranded. Probably great in their time like Woolworth's but didn't move with the time nor have God on their side.
Deuteronomy 20:16–17 (NIV):
"However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. Completely destroy them—the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites—as the Lord your God has commanded you."
"The Hittites were an ancient Anatolian civilization, emerging in the early 2nd millennium BC and establishing a powerful empire in the Bronze Age. They are known for their military prowess, especially their use of chariots and ironworking, and for creating the first known peace treaty with the Egyptians" - Blimey - they were smote to destruction.
