Just this is really ...how did they do it? Was this the secret service on steroids?

Current theory is that it was a supply chain attack. So they were manufactured that way, or something added to them before they were supplied. Astonishing isn't it. How long have Israel been sat there with a finger on the button? Weeks? Months? Years?

NobbyNeighbour · 17/09/2024 18:15

No idea, must have taken some doing to synchronise it all.

mids2019 · 17/09/2024 18:17

So the pager manufacturers were in on it?

I wonder how the Israeli's knew they were bound for the military and why would Hezbollah use pagers?

Mebebecat · 17/09/2024 18:21

Yup intercepted a new set Hezbollah pagers and made the changes I'm reading.

RiderOfTheBlue · 17/09/2024 18:22

Not necessarily in on it. The Israelis could have infiltrated, had someone on the inside.

karoba · 17/09/2024 18:26

I thought it was a virus that caused them to overheat.

Happii · 17/09/2024 18:26

It'd be the largest supply chain tampering in history if that was the case, not impossible though. It's not that hard to overheat a pager, they're not designed to transmit a lot of traffic at once, could have been similar to a ddos attack (where hackers send so much traffic to one site/server/network that it overloads it and causes it to crash) and the batteries overheated if all done remotely. Not sure we will ever be told the actual truth.

mids2019 · 17/09/2024 18:28

No explosive?

It's an extraordinary story

BibbityBobbityToo · 17/09/2024 18:31

I'm thinking a software update (virus) that shut down some internal cooling fan and caused the batteries to overheat?

Birdscratch · 17/09/2024 18:32

Sometimes phones catch fire. Strange things happen.

Werecat · 17/09/2024 18:34

I guess we’ll never really know. Mossad is going to rebuild its rep by the looks of it.

TooBigForMyBoots · 17/09/2024 18:34

Fucking hell.Shock

MangeMonCochonnet · 17/09/2024 18:35

Interesting that the Iranian ambassador had one ...

An 10yo child has died and you think it’s an extraordinary story? Where is the empathy ??

I think it's horrible like a terror attack

EsmaCannonball · 17/09/2024 18:41

I find this fascinating but worry that it spells a new kind of terrorism in the future with smart devices being used against civilians. We've already seen Russian hackers target infrastructure but innocent civilians being targeted through hacked or tampered with devices with be a whole other level.

They were told not to have phones so they couldn't be tracked.

Birdscratch · 17/09/2024 18:45

Pagers obviously carry a risk too.

mids2019 · 17/09/2024 18:46

Obviously you would need timers and/or a powerful RF signal across a large region. Maybe the signal was relayed.

I would conjecture the pagers had explosive in with a certain signal maybe causing mini circuit closure is the pagers?

EsmaCannonball · 17/09/2024 18:47

Security experts are suggesting explosives are the most likely cause but nobody is completely sure.

EasternStandard · 17/09/2024 18:48

It is terrifying in that we now know what is possible with devices

Indeed. Those that exploded were only from Hezbollah members ? And not from other members of the public that might need pagers for their work?(i.e doctors).

this is not because they’ve over overheated otherwise they’d have exploded at different times rather than all today within a timeframe

Ozanj · 17/09/2024 18:56

Israel might have supplied them through decoy Egyptian and Turkish companies. That’s usually how they achieve things like this
