The Lancet has just published this article "conservatively" estimating that the death toll in the Gaza genocide could be 186,000 people or more. That's 8% of the population, obliterated.

thanks op. I was about to open a thread after seeing Zarahs comment referencing it.

lancet is the most prestigious medical journal.

Dulra · 08/07/2024 07:14

Horrific. It is time the UN start demanding access to independently assess what the hell is going on

TomeTome · 08/07/2024 07:47

Surely no one can justify what is happening now?

Efacsen · 08/07/2024 08:04

This is a shockingly high estimated number of deaths - tho' have wondered for sometime who was counting all the 'other deaths' not due to direct bombing/shootings especially the deaths due to starvation and the poor survival of newborns

Really challenges the 'not a genocide' position now

.

No comment on the Lancet article?

79Helene · 08/07/2024 08:42

@Efacsen No actually I don't. I've made my comments about that on other threads.

If you say so - tho' can't actually see where, given this article was only published on Friday

How can anyone justify this genocide now

Marshmallowbrain · 08/07/2024 09:00

Just awful. Regardless of people's views this is just fucking awful and can't be justified. The world will continue to look on and actions left unpunished. A tone is being set here for the rest of the world.

Genocide would be 100% of the population gone no?

No

No that's not the definition of genocide enshrined in international law

100% of the Tutsi population weren't killed in the Rwanda genocide were they?

Parkingt111 · 08/07/2024 09:08

Although this is something I was aware of, to read this written down in such stark words was still difficult. Even if there was a ceasefire this very moment, the Palestinians will continue to suffer and feel the effects of this brutal war for years to come

Armed conflicts have indirect health implications beyond the direct harm from violence. Even if the conflict ends immediately, there will continue to be many indirect deaths in the coming months and years from causes such as reproductive, communicable, and non-communicable diseases. The total death toll is expected to be large given the intensity of this conflict; destroyed health-care infrastructure; severe shortages of food, water, and shelter; the population's inability to flee to safe places; and the loss of funding to UNRWA, one of the very few humanitarian organisations still active in the Gaza Strip.

Genocide would be 100% of the population gone no?

No, it's the intentional destruction of a nation in whole or in part

Genocide would be 100% of the population gone no?

No. 8000 men and boys were killed in Srebrenica and that was ruled to be genocide.

I meant I've made comments about Israel's behaviour in Gaza in other threads.

My point here is that it's so utterly disappointing that 9 months into this some people still seem unable to make comment without slipping in a completely unnecessary and goady comment about antisemitism/Jews.

I'll leave you to it.

ConnieCounter · 08/07/2024 09:26

Shocking figures but I suppose not really that shocking when we know about the issues in Gaza. Mass displacement, lack of all services, food, aid etc.

Because you've actually got nothing to say.

That's not an exact summary.

It doesn't lessen the tragedy to better summarise it for those who won't read the link as describing the death toll to date as 37,396. And based on the reviews of similar previous events the authors of the letter (note, letters are not peer reviewed in the same way as articles) consider it would "not be implausible" for the total including indirect deaths to reach 186,000 when the effects of displacement and loss of infrastructure are considered.

It is a very strong call for an immediate ceasefire.

That's a fair point @DogInATent

Not familiar with the Lancet letters page - does it publish responses challenging content of correspondence?
