The footage coming out of this this absolutely sickening. So many precious children killed. I've never seen anything like it. Poor innocent babies.

It's great that they managed to rescue 4 hostages (though it seems they killed others) but the human cost of that for Palestinians (and potentially other hostages) is absolutely obscene and not acceptable.

'This is what a massacre looks like': Israeli bombardment kills more than 200 in central Gaza

The Al-Aqsa Hospital has been overwhelmed by the dead and wounded arriving following the bombing.

@ConnieCounter I was agreeing with another poster about progress towards a ceasefire agreement. Not derailing the thread. You don’t get to decide how people engage with the topic.

Once again, I deplore all civilian deaths and indeed all deaths in conflict, it is tragic and we all wish it didn’t happen. The deaths of children are especially appalling. All human life is valuable. We do not make the world a better place by pretending that things are simple when they are not, nor by refusing to engage with different views, expressed in a civilised way.

However, I do have to go and do some other stuff now so I will leave, but thank you to those posters who have engaged with me in a civilised fashion, I appreciate it. 🙏

I avoid these threads and to my shame I sometimes avoid the news, and when I do read it’s a sanitised version because that’s all most of us can cope with. But today I read and needed to express my sadness.
I can’t understand how there is any civilised compassionate view other than this should not be happening. No matter what your view on the settlement discussion how can what is being perpetrated be viewed with anything other than horror.
How many of the Palestinian children’s name will never be known and spoken about. And what of the women and men lost. And what of the parents left behind with the unimaginable grief. There’s simply no explanation in my mind other than some lives do not matter.

Thank you; it is a tragedy for everyone affected. There's no shame in protecting your own mental health, what is happening is horrific. Take care of yourself and your loved ones. I'll be holding mine close tonight.

And we certainly don't make the world a better place by going "but Hamas" when people are mourning civilian deaths or by pretending October 7th was the start of the issues and that there aren't 1000s of Palestinians being held captive in Israel for spurious reasons

Apparently their work here is done so they're off

Bizarre

ConnieCounter · 08/06/2024 21:33

Well that's a relief. Rehashing the same shite that's been discussed here for 8 months on a thread about a hideous massacre which should mark a major turning point (I mean surely hiding in a humanitarian truck and the involvement of the US is major) in the conflict is so irritating. Especially when the poster isn't across the issues they're talking about.

Wonder whether using aid trucks today won’t put aid workers (more) at risk of being killed

also, if US has really helped on land today what does it mean. It’s a new step from Biden administration. Wishes he’d f**k off in the elections but the alternative isn’t any better. Can’t wait to read what sanders has to say

US boots on the ground might be the deal made to prevent open conflict with Iran. But it has potentially interesting legal repercussions which could add to the incentive to prevent the ICC and ICJ cases proceeding. If that is the deal that was struck, Netanyahu outplayed Biden there.

ConnieCounter · 08/06/2024 21:59

The use of the pier thar was meant to bring aid to Gazans to massacre them is also beyond fucked up.

Didn't even have the decency to bring over more than a few sandwiches beforehand.

Almost every week I think "it can't get any worse than this" and then it does.

Oh my goodness the scenes coming out of Gaza today are just beyond horrific. The children!! There are no words to describe. When will they be stopped!?

TakeMe2Insanity · 08/06/2024 22:29

I’ve been busy all day but briefly heard about the hostage release and was pleased for the individuals and their families - why? Because I am human.

Then I read about the massacre that took place in order to save those 4, I feel so numb that so many lost their lives today were slaughtered - why? Because I am human.

The “what should Israel do?” brigade and Netanyahu need to go and have a long hard look at themselves in a mirror.

At this point, I'm losing hope that it can be stopped. The only power that could realistically prevent this slaughter is the US, and that doesn't look likely to happen, either with this President or the next one.

When this started, I told people to run. That the window to get out was narrow and closing fast. Some chose to stay, to help. Some didn't make it out in time before everything closed. Some people went in with aid agencies. I didn't. I told myself that I couldn't do that to my DC, to risk them losing their mum in this. But on days like today, I look in the mirror and see a coward who could have tried harder.

I honestly at this point don't think Israel will stop until every Palestinian in Gaza is dead. I still have family there and I feel so utterly helpless. I hope desperately that they prove me wrong every day.

I also haven't gone to help with aid, I'm disabled and would be a liability and not a help, but I understand how you feel.

You aren't a coward though, you are pragmatic and oftentimes as a parent pragmatism has to win out.

And even if you were a coward, better that than some of the psychopaths who come on these thread to tell posters worrying about family and friends or just innocent victims that it's all the Gazan's own faults because they deserve it.

Scirocco · 08/06/2024 22:44

@MrsJackThornton thank you, that means a lot.

I hope your family get through this nightmare. If you feel you need a slightly more supportive space than this board to talk about things, there's a Muslim Mumsnetters board where some of us understand what it's like to have loved ones trapped in this. I don't know if you have a faith or not but either way, you'd be very welcome, I'm sure

I'm Christian (ish) and my Palestinian relatives are Christian too so I haven't wanted to interject too much although I was quite vocal in my support of the board under a different username

I appreciate the welcome and I might very well take you up on that tbh thank you

It's absolutely tragic what's happening to Palestine's Christian community. I am so sorry.

Oh no @Scirocco Your first duty is always to your children. That is what parenting requires. I am so sorry for this awful situation, for how hopeless it feels. There's a saying it's always darkest before the dawn.

@Scirocco I am so sorry that you are feeling so hopeless but you are definitely not a coward. Your place is with your dc you are right that is where you are needed now. I really hope things begin to improve but remember, despite what you read on these boards, there are more with than against Palestinians and the world is a lot bigger than the US and UK. It sees what is happening and it stands with Palestine and the thousands of innocent civilians who have lost their lives.
@MrsJackThornton I hope your friends and family are safe and continue to be and hope this nightmare will end for them soon. 💐

The world is a messed up cruel place. I wish people could find their humanity and remember that we are all equal and we all matter and that peace will not be achieved through the gun or the bomb, never has and never will.

I had to start this thread because apparently mentioning the fact that 210 or more people were killed during the same operation is "whataboutery" and shouldn't be discussed on the thread celebrating the release of the 4 hostages.

Such cognitive dissonance is absolutely unbelievable and is really really disturbing.

I think there is confusion and misuse about the term ‘whataboutery ‘.

Talking about the other side of the same coin is not ‘whataboutery’ as in deflecting away from one issue to an unrelated one of a separate time. It is talking about the same thing.

For example, on this thread - about this morning’s massacre of over 200 Palestinian people, the wounding of many more, and the possible killing of some hostages - someone could say, ‘Horror though this is, one good thing to come from it is the four rescued hostages and Noa and her dying mother meeting again’.

That would not be whataboutery, I don’t think, just as it was not whataboutery on the other thread, rejoicing in the rescued hostages, to point out the devastating corollary.

PearlKoala · 09/06/2024 00:31

I just saw Motaz Azaizas latest post on Instagram. I try to avoid photos/videos of what is happening these days and just read about it because if I'm honest I feel fucking haunted by some of the things I have seen but his photo popped up at the top of my feed. Those poor children. It's all so pointless when a ceasefire could have been agreed to, the hostages would have been home months ago and those little children would be tucked up at home with their parents. How can people applaud the 'rescue' and say well done when this is the result, people held hostage for longer than they should have been and children blown to pieces. Nothing about this conflict has been done well.

I am so sorry for your despair, but please do not think that. This is all like vortex of revenge sucking innocent people into an abyss.

Your children need you and more orphans will not help. You will be able to do more, alive, in the future.

You have done so much on these threads too to succinctly explain what has been happening to Palestinians and how it is wrong, giving them a voice really, but without loosing sight and understanding of what Hamas did to Israelis. Like a wise guide.
