"Brilliant moment pro-Israel protesters get their own back on pro-Palestine mob"

Pro-Israel supporters have taken to the streets after a cinema was vandalised with graffiti for planning to show a film about the Nova festival massacre at the hands of Hamas terrorists.

Pro-Palestine activists sprayed the Phoenix Cinema in East Finchley, London, with the message "say no to artwashing". In response, members of the Jewish community and campaigners against anti-Semitism are holding a demonstration outside the picturehouse.
Music could be heard blaring, including Elton John's I'm Still Standing, as smiling pro-Israel supporters waved the Israeli flag in a show of defiance.
A tiny band of pro-Palestine protesters are on the scene, however they are vastly outnumbered.

The volunteer, who wished to remain anonymous, told The Telegraph: “It’s just an outrage. People who are survivors of this massacre are coming here and they could have been confronted with red graffiti that honestly looked like blood.
“One of the people here knows someone who survived the massacre and she was coming tonight. Imagine the trauma if she saw this. People from the community have gone together to clean it up.
“It claimed that the film was artwashing - but it’s not. It’s footage from the festival. It shows what happened. There’s no agenda.

I wonder if they watched the film to see what they are supporting.

If you read the article you can see they are withdrawing their sponsorship because of its link to and funding from the Israeli state. There has been objections to this film festival for years. This article is from 2015 so long before what happened on Oct 7th. It is not to do with what specific film was shown but the film festival in general.

Just to clarify, I don't agree with the protests and vandalism that happened outside the cinema.

The directors were previously among more than 40 artists and film-makers who
called for a boycott of Seret in a letter to the Guardian in 2015. The letter stated: “By benefiting from money from the Israeli state, the cinemas become silent accomplices to the violence inflicted on the Palestinian people. The festival is co-sponsored by the Israeli government via the Israeli embassy in London, creating a direct link between these cinemas, the festival screenings and Israeli policies.”

Does not negate my comment.

Why?
I wonder if they watched the film to see what they are supporting.
So explain what they are supporting? To me it is more what they are not happy with supporting and haven't been for close to 10 years

Pro- Palestine Mob

Is that disgusting?

That's what a lot of people call them

OK that's not how I took the article at all. They said they resigned because the Israeli state was involved. Not sure where you got supporting Hamas or fascism from.

Fascism - that was a quote from Salman Rushdie who was commenting on the irony of Left wing activists supporting fascist terror organisations like Hamas.
The article you posted said
Artists for Palestine UK network said Seret was “part of a broader art-washing strategy” by the Israeli state to “whitewash and cover up its crimes against the Palestinian people”.
It seems to me that the pro Palestinian protesters in this article are trying to “whitewash and cover up the horror of October 7th. “

Sorry I thought you were talking about the two who resigned.

Whilst I think it's wrong to march outside the cinema, the footage of the pro-israeli group that is circulating on social media is terrible and really paints some of them in a bad light. Includes racist and aggressive abuse and really takes away from what they are protesting against

Chickenuggetsticks · 24/05/2024 06:26

I think it’s really clear how anti-semitism is very much part of some of these protest groups. I don’t know how anyone in their right mind could object to this unless they just hated Jewish people.

Indeed. Yet many would argue there is no anti semitism

PeasfullPerson · 24/05/2024 10:43

This was not the right place for a protest. It was disrespectful and insensitive and people who simply want to go and watch the film should be allowed to do that in peace. As @Scirocco said there are better ways to object if people are concerned about the links to the Israeli government.

Not interested in anyone who makes inflammatory remarks or uses this shameful incident as an excuse to bash the left again unless they want to qualify their statements by explaining they mean an extreme minority.

This is irresponsible reporting, people shouldn’t be encouraged to ‘get their own back’? The original protest should have been disbanded and the relevant people involved should be dealt with. Counter protests are a recipe for trouble.

You're always talking about how important the right to protest is and have compared saying anything negative about protestors to antisemitism. But counter protests are a recipe for trouble?

Blackcats7 · 24/05/2024 11:01

I was speaking to a young friend yesterday whose father installs fire alarms in London. He was recently servicing a fire alarm in a jewish school. The head teacher asked him to be very careful not to set off the other alarm sound because they have had to set a different siren as a warning of a terrorist attack due to the marches and the enormous rise in antisemitism.
All the staff and children are terrified this might happen so setting this off inadvertently would cause huge panic.
The children have also been told not to wear distinguishing uniform to and from school.
This is what the “mob” have achieved for british jewish people.

Can confirm.

My daughter goes to a Jewish nursery up the road from where we live, and I always worry when I hear sirens heading in that direction. We live in a very militant lefty city and the pro-Hamas mobs (yes mobs; that's what they are) are very active.

Every Friday afternoon there's a protest at the bottom of our street. Not exactly pleasant to hear them shouting "there is only one solution; intifada revolution" as I'm cooking for Shabbat. DH grew up in Jerusalem during the second intifada and has PTSD from getting on the bus directly after one that was blown up. His friends were on that one.

So yeah. Shit time for Jews in the uk. We're moving to Israel next year. A war zone is more appealing.

Yup. It's a tabloid though so not surprising.

Being distressed by the ongoing genocide in Gaza and standing against the use of the tragic Oct 7th attack as justification for genocide is not anti-semitism.

What makes you think it's your place to tell Jews what constitutes anti-semitism?

Do you do this to other groups? I very much doubt it.

Calling a conflict genocide doesn't make it true.

Appalling that this is what is happening in the UK. Poor children just want to be safe at school.

The right to protest shouldn't mean intimidating minority groups.

I'm so sorry you have to.put up with this. London police allow the mob (yes that's what they are and behave like) to go unchecked. Chanting pro intifada should be immediately arrested.
