Another one for here, this study by The Lancet Group suggests there is no evidence for an inflated death count in Gaza

‘Although valid mortality counts are important, the situation in Gaza is severe, with high levels of civilian harm and extremely restricted access to aid. Efforts to dispute mortality reporting should not distract from the humanitarian imperative to save civilian lives by ensuring appropriate medical supplies, food, water, and fuel are provided immediately.’

US imposes sanctions on extremist group which some say has links to Ben-Gvir. This is getting interesting.

I’d like to spare a thought for any IDF soldiers who don’t really want to be soldiers at all, and are being forced to risk their lives for something they don’t believe in. They and their families are also victims of the Israeli government.

The following excerpts are from the article below which discusses the eight soldiers that were killed today. My comments are not related to the soldiers that were killed today, I have no idea what their beliefs were or of the way they conducted themselves in Gaza. But, I do have empathy for any soldier who doesn’t want to be one, and who may be acting with integrity while in horrendous circumstances. I pray they exist!

What happens in the IDF, if you say
you don’t want to do this anymore?

‘In May, the parents of more than 900 Israeli soldiers deployed in Gaza signed a letter urging the military to call off its ongoing offensive in Rafah, calling it a “deadly trap” for their children.’

And, after a vote in favour of extending exemptions for religious men, families of soldiers wrote a second letter to Netanyahu.

’That prompted a second open letter last week from families of combat soldiers addressed to Gallant and Halevi. In the letter the families said they were asking their “fighting children” to “stop the fighting right now, put down their weapons and return home immediately,” adding: “We will not sacrifice our children on the altar of public corruption.”’

Eight Israeli soldiers killed in southern Gaza, military says

Yes, agreed.

Many soldiers must have felt they wanted to defend Israel and to do whatever they could to free the hostages, but it must be beginning to feel as though this is all going beyond that, while not getting the hostages out, and that it could just carry on endlessly.

”Stop! Now! We Mothers of Israeli Soldiers Demand an End to the Futile War in Gaza
I'm part of a movement of parents of IDF soldiers who once supported the war, but now oppose what has turned into a pointless death-trap for our children, a war led by an extremist government unwilling to ever end it.”
(Haaretz, Israeli newspaper, May 26 2024.)

Now there is a real danger of complete war with Lebanon too.

U.S.: CBS News reported that U.S. officials fear tensions between Israel and Hezbollah could erupt into a full-scale war. Some officials said they interpret the recent further-reaching Israeli strikes as "preparing the battlefield for a sweeping assault" into Lebanon by the Israeli army.
(Haaretz yesterday.)

From Haaretz (Israeli newspaper)

ISRAEL: Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir participated in a parliamentary caucus advocating for Israeli Jewish settlements in Gaza, and said he was committed to building settlements "throughout Gaza,"adding that re-settlement "must be accompanied by encouraging emigration" of Palestinians from the Strip, insisting that "If we do not promote emigration, we are deceiving ourselves.

What is not clear to me is whether he and Smotrich are considered to be extreme, and outliers, or leaders with a large following in proportion
to the population as a whole.

ScrollingLeaves · 18/06/2024 22:52

From Haaretz ( Israeli newspaper).

A document based on information from the IDF's military intelligence 8200 unit that included details of Hamas' plan to raid Israel was brought to the attention of at least some senior intelligence officials but apparently ignored, Israel's public broadcaster reported, citing unnamed sources who provided the document.

Report:
New Evidence Reveals IDF Had Detailed Prior Knowledge of Hamas Plan to Raid Israel

A never-before-seen IDF document surfaces startling new details of Hamas' operational plans to invade Israel; The report outlines Hamas orders to take between 200-250 Israelis hostage

A newly surfaced document reveals that Israel Defense Forces and Israeli intelligence systems had detailed knowledge of Hamas' plan to raid Israel, including the number of hostages to be taken and specific instructions for their treatment while in captivity.

@ScrollingLeaves I'd like to say that's shocking but it's not. Negligent to say the least. Does the report say why the warning was ignored? I mean it's so specific and detailed why would you ignore it? I'd sort of understand if it was a "hey Israel we're going to attack you soon" and that was it but it's not. Israel (government and IDF) do have a lot to answer for and failing to take precautions to prevent the atrocity of 7/10 is their part to blame in all this.

@anotherlevel , I don’t know, unfortunately, and was not able to see the whole article. Maybe it will be archived soon.

There was a much earlier (28 Nov 2023)
Guardian article about ignored evidence:
Israeli intelligence leak details extent of warnings over Hamas attack
Officer who reviewed intelligence considered risk of big attack ‘an imaginary scenario’, leak suggests
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/nov/28/israeli-military-had-warning-of-hamas-training-for-attack-reports-say

I think they did not believe the evidence of a ‘plan’ of attack was evidence that Hamas really would attack, more that it was for show, and that Hamas field exercises, including kibbutz house mock-ups, that had been noted, were just general Hamas practice.

It is interesting imo that the senior intelligence officer who reported the
possible plan for an attack - which was ignored - was female.
In addition there were female border surveillance officers ‘spotting’ on the border whose reports were not taken seriously. (But I’ve already posted links about them often.)

Is that a legitimate translation? As bad as he is I can't imagine him being this blatant

@anotherlevel , I think @Dulra is right - there has been a mistranslation:

AP FACT CHECK
Israeli PM announced plans to rebuild areas near Gaza border, not build inside the territory.

CLAIM: A video shows Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announcing in Hebrew plans to build settlements in the Gaza Strip, with a $5 billion investment from the U.S.

AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. Netanyahu’s comments were translated incorrectly in English captions added to the video. He was referencing a five-year, $5 billion plan approved by the Israeli government on Wednesday to rebuild communities near the Gaza border, in the country’s Western Negev region. Netanyahu does not mention a U.S. investment.

THE FACTS: Social media users are using the miscaptioned video of Netanyahu speaking at the start of an Israeli Cabinet meeting on Wednesday to make erroneous claims about the alleged settlement plans.

The captions read in part: “Today the Cabinet will approve a plan to rebuild the settlements of the Gaza Strip. We will invest a very large sum of 19 billion shekels to make the settlements of the Gaza Strip available to generations.”

“BREAKING: Why did Israel commit the genocide in Gaza?” asks one X post that shared the video. Following an emoji of a finger pointing down next to the words “the answer,” the post continues: “Netanyahu unveils plans to construct settlements in Gaza, backed by a staggering investment of USD 5 billion.”

That does not mean there are not some extremist factions who do want to resettle Gaza.

I was just looking it up and saw by chance that AP had done that fact check. I think it is very easy to forget how mistranslations do occur.

Do some Putin shill found a handful of racist Israelis, cut some clips together for insta and is trying to claim all Israelis are like that. What's your point?

Nothing says peace like giving far-right extremists more power in occupied land.

A cynical person might think that maybe the government aren't that interested in peace and little things like human rights. But no, surely that can't be the case... After all, this is the most moral army in the world...
