It said three weeks didn’t it? Is that realistic? Won’t come soon enough.

IDK if Rafah continues to get 250 trucks/day or more every day from now on [70% of the population], Israel lets UNWRA deliver to northern Gaza via their military road and the air-drops do as much as possible in central Gaza??

Lots of ifs

And as we've seen upthread lots of promises to release the huge stockpiles of food which don't happen/drag on interminably

So I don't know

Efacsen · 07/03/2024 18:15

But then again there's Netanyahus threat to carry out his land invasion of Rafah ?early next week [Ramadan] and the ridiculous idea of evacuating Rafah

So who knows

Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel will push on with its offensive in Gaza, including in Rafah, regardless of international pressure. Israel’s prime minister said “There is international pressure and it’s growing, but particularly when the international pressure rises, we must close ranks, we need to stand together against the attempts to stop the war.”

Seems like Biden has finally lost patience with the Israeli government faffing about with promises to improve the food aid situation whilst babies and children are actually dying of starvation and widespread famine is looming

Hope it happens and happens soon

Calling it a 'port' seems a little excessive on their part - sounds more like a substantial pier

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/mar/07/biden-us-port-gaza-aid-delivery

I'm not sure what the point of this is, apart from ax expensive publicity stunt by Biden.

The issue with the aids getting through now is goods not being permitted through by Israel, l arbitrary rejection of goods at inspection etc. It could be allowed in now but Israel finds every reason to stall it.

The aid will still go through Israeli inspection before being shipped to the port. Why do we think they'll start allowing it in then, when they could do now but won't?

Parkingt111 · 07/03/2024 19:02

I think it's both. It sends a message to Israel and the world that the US does not believe that Israel is allowing enough aid in. They said it behind closes doors, when that didn't work they started to say it openly, when that didn't work they condemned, when that didn't work they went through a long and expensive process of air dropping aid, despite that Israel is still not budging with opening up enough entries for aid and continuing to reject much of the aid being allowed in. So now it's a big expensive show of building a port to allow in aid.
When really all they had to do from the start was say no more sale of arms if you don't allow in sufficient aid. But Biden won't do that.

Parkingt111 · 07/03/2024 19:05

This from sky sums it up better than I did

Plans for an aid port on Gaza's coast show the US does not believe Israel's claims that enough aid is getting into the territory, international affairs editor Dominic Waghorn says.
But there will be challenges to build the pier - both in terms of security and time.
"This is a clear sign that America is not buying Israel's claims that enough food and aid is getting in because America is saying, effectively, 'If you're not going to do it, we're going to do it instead'," Waghorn says.
"It is a pretty clear riposte to the Israeli claim."
The pier will be a "challenge" to execute in a secure way, he says, given US boots won't be in the ground.
And aid agencies have warned "time is running out" before famine is declared.

If US boots won't be on the ground, who is building it?

anotherlevel · 07/03/2024 20:07

I mean how is mocking the call to prayer going to help get rid of Hamas?

This seems to be working well with some people. But of course they'll say it's somehow Hamas propaganda/criticise the veracity of the article/deny/defend.

TokyoSushi · 07/03/2024 20:56

This is quite a simple explainer, so to US 'boots on the ground' but plenty of US boots on boats leaning over the side building the pier it seems. So a technicality, 'look we're not in Gaza, just super near it...'

From BICOM

In coordination with Israel, the UN will today assess using an Israeli military road bordering the Gaza Strip to deliver aid into the territory.

The US also made its second airdrop of aid into Gaza yesterday in a joint operation with Jordan, Egypt, and France.

Also yesterday, Israel’s Channel 13 reported that Israel will the for the first time allow humanitarian aid to enter Gaza via sea. The UAE will finance the aid shipments, which will be sent from there to Cyprus, for inspection by Israeli officials.

Sources suggest the first aid ship will sail from Cyprus in the coming days.

Efacsen · 07/03/2024 21:21

Thanks @TokyoSushi it might be easier to build a pontoon type thing in Egypt and then tow it a few miles down the coast to Gaza - someone's bound to fall in leaning out of boats like that

,

TokyoSushi · 07/03/2024 21:24

Yes, perhaps they'll do that. The Sky article seems to suggest it'll connect in northern Gaza, but the whole strip isn't that far to move it I suppose.

What a complete nightmare this is, the IDF are so entrenched in their no mercy whatever the civilian consequence position it's difficult to see them not going into Rafah. I dread to think what Ramadan will bring.

Efacsen · 07/03/2024 21:41

@TokyoSushi personally don't think it's beyond the bounds of possibility for Israel to also sabotage this US plan - there's been talk of a maritime pathway for aid from Cyprus into northern Gaza for ages which Israel agreed to weeks if not months ago - but it never happens

For a long time France had a special ship moored in Cyprus with a fleet of helicopters to fly aid in northern gaza - don't know if it's still there or the French got fed up and took it home

As you say a complete nightmare and things only getting worse for the hungry people

TokyoSushi · 07/03/2024 21:45

Yes, I also have a feeling it might not come to pass, Cyprus definitely seems to have a big part in the plan, so I imagine with us having a big base there too, we also have a big part in the plan.

The other thing that could happen is that the US say they won't put boots on the ground so the Israelis will have to distribute the aid. The Israelis could refuse to distribute, which would cause utter chaos then at the new port with every person for themselves.

The IDF were saying just now that they won't open the Erez crossing on principle, because that was a key access point for Hamas on 7th October.

Parkingt111 · 07/03/2024 21:48

I read something this morning about COGAT saying they would be happy to facilitate aid through additional crossings into Gaza but they haven't been given the go ahead to do so by the Israeli government. Il see if I can find it, I do remember thinking at the time that it seemed unusual for COGAT to say. It's almost as if everyone is trying to distance themselves from being a part of the starvation campaign and right now all fingers are pointing towards Netanyahu

Efacsen · 07/03/2024 21:54

@Parkingt111 also read something similar about increasing tensions between IDF/COGAT and the Israeli government over this

Also the signs of some rapprochment with UNWRA

Parkingt111 · 07/03/2024 21:58

@Efacsen I think it was in the times of Israel but I can't find it now. If I do I will post it. If COGAT is happy to facilitate it then I can't understand why the ones who hold power are refusing it.
The maritime corridor will take quite awhile to establish and the situation could very well drastically deteriorate by then, which in turn would also make things more difficult for COGAT.

Efacsen · 07/03/2024 21:59

@Parkingt111 have you seen the tweet in Hebrew posted by @BelleHathor yesterday at the end of the ICJ 2 thread about the gossip in DC and fate of Netanyahu - might not be true of course but did predict the port before it was announced

Parkingt111 · 07/03/2024 22:07

@Efacsen yes I saw that. It might not be 100% true but there's no smoke without fire, I also read (unconfirmed reports) in the times of Israel that the US may seek to enforce that US weapons are not used in any assault on Rafah.

Efacsen · 07/03/2024 22:09

COGAT actually being on the ground in Gaza can likely see what's happening first-hand and experience how awful it is -it's also responsible for the IDFs humanitarian response so maybe has a different view for those reasons

Parkingt111 · 07/03/2024 22:20

Yes I agree.

TokyoSushi · 07/03/2024 22:21

A COGAT spokesman seemed to say that they would happily get tonnes of aid into Gaza if the Israeli government would open the borders, but they won't open them...

A father and son found executed. They were wearing the white jumpsuits that the IDF make the prisoners wear. Graphic images.

"You don’t murder over 15,000 children, bomb over 300,000 houses, destroy hundreds of schools and universities, ruin ever single mosque and church, destroy every single hospital, attack refugee camps in safe zones, displace millions and get to say it’s a “PLAUSIBLE GENOCIDE”…

THIS IS A GENOCIDE"

Are we to believe that Hamas was in every single one of those buildings?
