Also worth mentioning about today’s March that there were a lot more people cheering us on the sides / in trams / cafes. People are starting to understand why we March and are becoming more aware of the number of innocent lives being taken on an hourly basis !

stormy4319trevor · 02/03/2024 16:55

@Nads0622 Thank you, that's interesting and good to hear. I've met a lot of middle aged and older women concerned about what's happening in Gaza. Maybe because they have children and grandchildren. There are all kinds of people, men and younger people too, as well of course.

AliceA2021 · 02/03/2024 16:59

I imagine that many on the marches are genuine calling for a ceasefire.

This group are calling for 'the state of Israel to go'. Not sure where they are expecting them to go though 🙄

Large groups of protesters contain people with many different ideas.

There are some better banners this time with, 'no to islamophoia and no to anti semitism'. Lots more police on duty too so maybe that helps. At least so far no intimidation of customers of McDonalds or Costa. They don't like Barclays much though.

Just got back , peaceful , didn’t see any antisemitic slogans . From children to the elderly , all races and religions ( I would say the Muslim community was hugely under represented which saddened me as I feel they’re not coming out as much as they initially did and other communities are now more represented .)
A huge feeling of Peace, unity and love with one thing in common, wanting an end to the senseless bloodshed. Had a laugh with a few ladies at the end ( all pensioners) about were supposedly we’re all terrorists according to the media. I’m sure there were some people that misbehaved but we didn’t see any and they would hugely be in the minority but the media looks for them and plasters those images in the papers . I was explaining to my children that this is how women got the vote , by protesting. It’s part of British culture and it’s disgraceful listening to Rishi lecturing us on democracy whilst trying to silence us .

Thank you.
Your reference to votes for women elicited a wry smile as I found myself idly wondering earlier today how Sunak Starmer would have reacted to the suffragettes.

Rishi Sunak, the man who wasn't elected, lecturing us on democracy? You really couldn't make it up.
I listened to " Any answers?" phone in and all the callers ( bar one) were in favour of the marches, as a democratic right .
As you rightly posted, every right in the UK were achieved by protesting.
May it continues.

It’s hard as there’s so many people on the marches not everyone is going to agree. For example I disagree with the obsession with marks and Spencer which isn’t even on the BDS list and can empathise with the way shoppers who don’t know much about the situation feel but nothing is perfect and it’s a small critiscism of the March where I feel the benefit far outweighs the bad

PeasfullPerson · 02/03/2024 17:45

So on the one hand you say you didn't witness any antisemitism, on the other hand you admit there's an obsession with M&S, which is antisemitism.

Edited to add that I'm not having a go at you. I'm just pointing out that there is more antisemitism than you seem to realise. Which is understandable - you won't be as aware of it as I am as it doesn't directly affect you or threaten your family. That's normal. Just please don't try and tell me there isn't any antisemitism at these marches or that it's minimal, some kind of acceptable amount.

That’s not anti semitism. I personally don’t shop at marks and Spencer because I’m satisfied that funds have been involved in mistreatment of palestines , the same way I don’t buy things from Shein for other ethical reasons but I dont agree that that’s the way to make people who have no knowledge of the history understand. It’s ok to disagree. Unity comes from respecting that we will have different opinions. I’m allowed to not agree with everything and 100% it’s not anti semitism. Personally I shop local and at small independent businesses , is that anti semitic ?
there’s this obsession with calling any criticism of anything anti semitic and pouncing on anything people say. We’re allowed to disagree with things but can still respect other people’s beliefs .

Sorry I’m probably being pedantic but we don’t vote for prime ministers in a cabinet system. The political party choose the leader not the public. You are thinking of the presidential system.

Barquentine · 02/03/2024 18:26

Not surprisingly more protests today outside Barclays Bank for bankrolling, in the billions, companies manufacturing and supplying arms to the Israeli forces and thousands of people have closed their accounts so far.
Let’s hope many more do in a quiet protest for peace.

I am aware ,of course, that this is the system here but when you vote in a general election, you actually know who will become prime minister ( Boris Johnson, for example). Rishi Sunak became prime minister without a general election as did Liz Truss. Therefore, the electorate had no voice.

Years ago when I lived up north, there would be people protesting outside M&S every single Saturday. They'd stop anyone visibly Jewish and demand they speak out against Israel. When they were asked why they were outside M&S their answer was that it is because it's a Jewish shop.

So I'm going to really struggle to accept that there isn't any antisemitism involved in the obsession with M&S. I wish people would stop pretending it's just about Israel. It isn't.

Am not aware that anyone including nads has said that anti semitism is acceptable. I think you need to focus if your target is actually anti semitism. Or you do the cause a severe disservice.

Apologies for ignorance. I know the US is supplying arms to Israel for its slaughter. Is the UK?

I really don't need you telling me what to focus on, but thanks for your input 👍🏻

They said something about the benefits of the marches outweighing the negatives. I don't think any amount of racism can be outweighed by any 'benefits'.

Yes.

If you search on Google or similar, you can find the figures. I think it was about £42million worth in 2022, and almost £600million worth since 2008.

I completely disagree with the tactics used in the examples you’ve given from years ago and they’ve given the wrong reason for being outside the shop. If they’re saying they’re outside because it’s a Jewish shop , yes that is antisemitic but if it’s because they disagree with the ethics of where the profits are going that isn’t. If anyone at the March today has said they against a business because it was Jewish I would have 💯 called them out but I didn’t come across that. The criticism of business relates to the ethics of where the profits go and legitimate criticism of Israel.

Please stop lvereging gratuitous and unfair accusations of anti semitism. It does your cause no favours and in fact endangers it.
Yes anti semitism exists.
Have no reason to think that poster (or their children,) is anti Semitic, let alone excuses it.
I suggest you bear witness to the marches.

Once again you’re putting words in my mouth. At no point did I say that the negative was racism as it 100 per cent isn’t as I genuinely haven’t seen any, the negatives that I see is that the average member of the British public who has no understanding of what’s happening and is likely to be brainwashed by the media will inconvenienced by the protests ( I’m the sort of person who feels bad even if I have to make someone wait to cross the road as I hate inconveniencing anyone )
I feel like you want there to be a problem that there isn’t. At no point have I even alluded to their being racism at the protests and now you’re claiming that that’s when I meant when I was saying a negative. Just for complete clarification again, the negative is not racism , there is no racism. ( another negative I was referring is that I had to rush with my 3 kids after finishing the beavers session I lead which was complete chaos today, to go to the March but it was 💯 worth it as the benefit of hoping to raise awareness completely outweighs the negative )
just clarifying all the negatives so you don’t jump to the fact it’s racism which you seem to so desperately be hoping for

noblegiraffe · 02/03/2024 19:13

Wow.

The level of patronising smug superiority on this thread is reaching unprecedented levels.

I don’t know how Jews can stand to be talked over and at in this way.

PeasfullPerson · 02/03/2024 19:14

This thread and the regular posters on it in my opinion definitely do a disservice to efforts against anti-semitism. But they are just a small selection who are not representative of the majority.
I tried to make an effort to engage on here but my comments were met with name calling and swearing, and their empathy only extends to certain people. When I mentioned something disturbing had happened in response to me advocating for empathy towards the people in Gaza - silence.

PeasfullPerson · 02/03/2024 19:15

I wouldn’t bother with them @Nads0622
