Not sure if anyone's been following this, but the US military serviceman who set himself on fire in protest against the genocide has been named. He is Aaron Bushnell. His final message on Facebook was:

"Many of us like to ask ourselves, 'What would I do if I was alive during slavery? Or the Jim Crow South? Or apartheid? What would I do if my country was committing genocide?' The answer is, you're doing it. Right now."

I feel for him. That feeling of immense frustration and powerless at witnessing atrocities play out day after day and not being able to do anything to stop them. I'm sure there will be people who will be quick to write him off as insane, but it's the world that's letting this happen that's insane.

I did see this story. It's terribly sad, may he rest in peace.

"Israelis block aid to Gaza and celebrate by setting up a bouncy castle and eating popcorn and cotton candy"

My god.

They're hardly 'blocking aid' are they ? There are about 20 of them having a picnic.

Anyway you'll be pleased to know that aid has been delivered to Northern Gaza by a UK/Jordanian initiative.

Excellent work by the Jordanian airforce - but doubt that 11 packages of food aid is going to compensate for all the other ways in which humanitarian aid is being impeded

The effects of which become increasingly being felt by the most vulnerable palestinians as newborns and young babies die of starvation

“The Israeli government is starving Gaza’s 2.3 million Palestinians, putting them in even more peril than before the World Court’s binding order,” Omar Shakir, the Israel and Palestine director at Human Rights Watch, said. “The Israeli government has simply ignored the court’s ruling, and in some ways even intensified its repression, including further blocking lifesaving aid.”

OneMerryRedSnail · 27/02/2024 08:06

@Efacsen Israel has been on this for a month now

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/28/world/middleeast/israel-gaza-aid-kerem-shalom.html

OneMerryRedSnail · 27/02/2024 08:10

From PBS News Hour 26/2/24

Israel denies it is restricting the entry of aid and has instead blamed humanitarian organizations operating inside Gaza, saying hundreds of trucks filled with aid sit idle on the Palestinian side of the main crossing. The U.N. says it can’t always reach the trucks at the crossing because it is at times too dangerous.

Netanyahu’s office also said Monday the War Cabinet had approved a plan to deliver humanitarian aid safely into Gaza in a way that would “prevent the cases of looting.”
It did not disclose further details.

Efacsen · 27/02/2024 08:13

OneMerryRedSnail · 27/02/2024 08:06

Well they're not doing a very good job are they? because overall the amount of food getting to these starving people has dropped by over 30% and the number of newborns/babies dying has increased over the last month

There's been a bit of window-dressing over recent days which is presumably for the benefit of their ICJ report rather than the welfare of the palestinian people

Nothing new there! Israel always blames 'aid agencies'

Whilst at the same time declares their intention to 'starve out Hamas/turn starving locals against Hamas' by preventing humanitarian relief

I'm not getting into a big argument about this.

I'm reporting a newspaper article.

There is so much misinformation being promulgated about this conflict that most people don't know what to believe.

If Israel have broken International Law then that will be decided later.

stomachamelon · 27/02/2024 08:22

I think to cover the aid bases cooperation from all areas surrounding Gaza should be involved. Removes the ability of one cog in the wheel facing all the blame or breaking it down.
Hopefully that will be discussed in the ongoing talks. More air drops, addressing lawlessness, people stepping in with support from international actors.

That'll be a bit late for the babies dying now won't it?

stomachamelon · 27/02/2024 08:24

@OneMerryRedSnail if the UN is already saying it is unsafe to deliver it then it's not outside the realms of possibility that aid is sat undelivered.
Israel promised it would be provided. Perhaps an international task force could deliver it. Still has to be safe though?

The most helpful thing would surely be for Israel to stop weaponising aid and trying to 'starve out Hamas'

Don't you ever wonder how much food the poor hostages are getting with this strategy? Let alone the equally innocent population

Why should anyone help when it is the Israeli government entirely responsible for preventing aid getting in? Perhaps they could agree to a ceasefire without promising a ground invasion regardless of whether hostages are returned or not. They hold the power here.

Efacsen · 27/02/2024 08:52

the UN is already saying it is unsafe to deliver it

IDF were targeting the local police protecting the aid convoys - US told them to stop doing that by which time the police had withdrawn

IDF have made airstrikes on at least 3 aid convoys

IDF have refused permits/protection for aid convoys

Starvation is the cause of the breakdown of civil behaviour - UN convoy driver badly beaten - UN warned Israel about this months ago ?beginning of Dec - and were ignored

then it's not outside the realms of possibility that aid is sat undelivered.

World Food Programme did an audit this week - there is sufficient food in warehouses in Jordan and Egypt to feed the entire population of Gaza

See also photos of huge traffic jams of lorries laden with food queuing in the desert in Egypt

Israel promised it would be provided. Perhaps an international task force could deliver it. Still has to be safe though?

Maybe Israel could taken it's foot off the necks of starving desperate people and let them eat all that food

Parkingt111 · 27/02/2024 09:36

@Efacsen well said.
The deliberate blocking of aid and weaponising starvation knowing that it will affect civilians including children is particularly grim.
I pray that none of us here ever have to be in a situation where we have to helplessly watch our children slowly starve to death and there's nothing we can do about it. As a parent I can't imagine many things worse than that.

stomachamelon · 27/02/2024 12:26

@Efacsen I just see it differently you are seeing it with your clear bias.

And before you thrown a wobbler there are elements I agree with just not all of it.

We are entitled to disagree and I entitled not to buy into your emotive rhetoric.

@Efacsen @Efacsen

What about that post was "emotive"? I see a lot of posters dismissing others because they sayt what they write is "emotive" and therefore apparently not worth engaging with - usually stuff like children being slaughtered, starved etc.

Can you clarify from your point of view?

stomachamelon · 27/02/2024 15:25

I think it's quite straightforward and not needing of hand wringing and step by step instruction.

You can always google what certain words mean if you are still confused.

And I did engage so that removes that too.

@Efacsen @Efacsen

You are not biased?
Of course, we are entitled to disagree and I will vehemently continue to do so.
What you call " emotive rhetoric", I call outrage because what is happening in Gaza is outrageous, amoral and barbaric. Defending this is, in my eyes, beggars belief; the same applies to defending Hamas' atrocities.
Anyway, maybe this thread is not for you. After all, it is about the reality of what the Israeli government is doing, isn't it?

stomachamelon · 27/02/2024 16:15

I have as much right to be here as you do on the 'standing up for Israel' thread so I am good ta.

Another question dodged. Little surprise there in fairness.

This is a tweet from the Israeli film maker that won the award the other day

“A right-wing Israeli mob came to my family’s home yesterday to search for me, threatening close family members who fled to another town in the middle of the night. I am still getting death threats and had to cancel my flight home. This happened after Israeli media and German politicians absurdly labeled my Berlinale award speech - where I called for equality between Israelis and Palestinians”

it’s much longer in the tweet

@EasterIssland My Twitter won’t load this morning. Is that Alon Schwartz, maker of Tantura?
