Quite right too, Floodlight!

Is this about Ackman or Gay?
I think the thing with her plagiarism was that it was on more than one document. She had been spoken to and more arose.

headstone · 07/01/2024 10:31

There is always the question asked why people care about the Palestinians with the implication they must be antisemetic to care. I think we would have to go back to the potato famine, possible one of the last times Britain was involved in starving millions of people. What if ordinary British folk had cared more about the Irish then? Anyway anyone on this thread is invested more than the ordinary Brit.

noblegiraffe · 07/01/2024 10:39

Pretty sure you can care about Palestinians without boycotting Starbucks because they objected to a pro-Hamas post on social media, or without chanting support for a group whose slogan includes 'Death to Israel and a curse upon Jews'.

Unfortunately, there seem to be a group of protesters who seem unable to do this. One wonders whether they are either completely stupid and don't actually know what they are doing, or whether they do actually support terrorists.

Indeed.

Bill Ackman against plagiarism?
One rule for him, one for Claudine Gay.

What happened to "I won’t be engaging further with this particular meaningless blind alley"?

headstone · 07/01/2024 12:01

I don’t think there is anything wrong with not buying Starbucks, the coffee is shit for a start, people can make there own minds up if they want to buy it. Anyone involved with genuine antisemitism will surely be dealt with by the police I don’t see the need to smear everyone, although I can understand why smearing everyone with concern for Palestinians benefits certain parties.

I don't buy Starbucks because I don't like it.

That is entirely different to boycotting Starbucks on the basis that they are suing people over using their logo on a pro-Hamas social media post. Which is what lots of people appear to be doing - and police have had to be posted outside Starbucks as a result because these idiots are not only boycotting, but also trying to intimidate customers. I assume you object to that as you want people to be allowed to make up their own minds about whether to go there.

What do you think about the large crowd chanting support for the Houthis?

plusjamais · 07/01/2024 12:18

It's not being dealt with. How do you define antisemitism? It's not a scale of 'genuine' to 'a little bit'. If people are chanting in support for the Houthi at protests then we've got a pretty big problem. They are a virulently antisemitic - and misogynistic - group. Chanting slogans in their defence is therefore antisemitic. You can't expect Jews to feel safe around that (and why women think this is acceptable beggars belief). Why are they in masks? They're the same people shouting at Starbucks shops and intimidating customers, and boycotting their coffee, which is rank, I'll give you that.

I don’t see the need to smear everyone
Unless more pr-Palestine voices speak up against the actions of a minority, including organisers engaging with Jewish organisations, then of course there's going to be negative attitudes towards the protestors.

quantumbutterfly · 07/01/2024 12:45

Just come across a wonderful recording of a reporter calling Yale about the Hebrew lettering on their logo..fraid I can't link right now but Google it .it's golden.😂

So a plant pathogen in 1845 caused potato crops to fail. The 'ordinary British folk' of the time were pretty poor and didn't have social media telling them
what was happening. The British government believed in Laissez-faire and didn't help which was wrong and now Britain is a country that tries to help many countries.

stomachameleon · 07/01/2024 17:13

@headstone honestly did you think 'on the bones of his arse' ordinary British man is going to know or care?
Do you know much about social history from that era?

Cressidaick · 07/01/2024 19:56

Are people seriously trying to defend Gay? 🙄

Trulywonderful · 10/01/2024 01:00

"Today we’re issuing new, clearer images and asking for the public's help to try and identify these men linked to our investigations into suspected criminal behaviour at protests in London.

If you have any information call 101 or Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 quoting the relevant image reference."

Oh the Irony!
he’s going mad on X trying to justify the lifting of a whole passage from Wikipedia by his wife for her dissertation.

Pretty inaccurate summary there of the potato famine @Itsalmostherenow. Many actually do call it a genocide because although the potato crop failed, which was the main food supply of the Irish poor, the country did have an abundance of food and grain but poor people had to use it to pay their rent to their English landlords or face eviction. Large amounts of food were exported from Ireland during the famine and the British government refused to bar such exports. We didn't have social media at the time but they did have newspapers and it was reported on widely at the time, even a native American tribe called the choctaw in Oklahoma heard about it and sent aid. Over one million people died of starvation and over one million emigrated. The country lost a quarter of its population in 4 years! Don't want to derail thread but it is important to correct inaccuracies.

@stomachameleon could you explain what your post means? Why would people not care? because the Irish were pretty dehumanised at the time?

stomachameleon · 10/01/2024 08:57

@Trulywonderful do we know what happened to the women from the first March in the parasailing costumes? The ones with pictures attached to their backs?

Trulywonderful · 10/01/2024 10:58

Heba Alhayey, [DOB: 14/08/1994], of south London, has been charged with carrying or displaying an article, namely an image displaying a paraglider, in a public place, namely Whitehall, in such a way or in such circumstances as to arouse reasonable suspicion that she is a supporter of a proscribed organisation, namely Hamas, contrary to section 13(1) Terrorism Act 2000.

Pauline Ankunda, [DOB: 19/06/1997], of south London, has been charged with carrying or displaying an article, namely an image displaying a paraglider, in a public place, namely Whitehall, in such a way or in such circumstances as to arouse reasonable suspicion that she is a supporter of a proscribed organisation, namely Hamas, contrary to section 13(1) Terrorism Act 2000.

This is a summary-only offence, with a maximum prison sentence of six months.

They were due back in court for 10th November I think. Sorry don't know what happened after that. I will try and check.

Trulywonderful · 10/01/2024 11:10

A third woman was also identified and charged with a terror offence for supporting Hamas by carrying a picture of a paraglider at a protest. This was on the same protest 14th October as the other two. Noimutu Olayinka Taiwo, 27, of south London was due to appear in court at the same time

This is what the CPS said after charging them:

“Criminal proceedings against the two women are active and they each have the right to a fair trial."

“It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings."

So I think possibly the court day got delayed form 10th November and that is why or they have pleaded not guilty. A not guilty pleaded would mean a full trial will happen with a new future date.

Protesters are outside the Houses of Parliament tonight calling for an intifada.

Previous intifadas were characterised by campaigns of violence and suicide bombings.
