How do prevent the rise of anti Semitic feeling in the UK?

Will the continuous marches in London lead to an environment where anti semitism becomes acceptable? There has been a massive rise in hate crime against Jews and surely in the UK we have a duty to prevent any platform which may lead to unjustified hatred of a group in the UK?

I feel we should feel pride we have a diverse society with a while range of ethnicities and religions but we should always act to encourage social cohesion by not allowing events that could contain messages of hate.

Although the support of the Palestinian people is absolutely reasonable in terms of free speech in a democratic society and it is reasonable to comment on the actions of the Israeli state at times the marches in a lot of major British cities have the danger of including terrorist apologists.

Jewish ambassador says London feels less safe than Israel

Tzipi Hotovely told the Daily Telegraph that the Jewish community felt fear due to 'jihad ideology' witnessed during pro-Palestinian protests in the capital city over the past month.

The petition shared for president of Penn University to resign over her hate speech was a victory .

Today Liz Magill resigned.

Trulywonderful · 10/12/2023 18:48

I read something that said had resigned from being leader but was not a lecturer

Anyone know if that is true?

She should have to resign completely. Not fit to be working in an educational establishment

Muslims Against Antisemitism @ MAA

"These Hannukah lights make London a more beautiful place.

Seeing them, as Muslims, gives us security & safety.

Because pluralism means strength. At this time, may British Jews know & see that they have a space for a future in the U.K. "

She's resigned as President but is keeping her tenure in the Law Faculty. And the guy that accepted her resignation has also resigned.

"Scott Bok, the chair of UPenn’s board of trustees, announced Ms Magill had voluntarily tendered her resignation in a statement on Saturday.
In a separate statement, Mr Bok said he had also resigned with immediate effect on Saturday".

This explains so much

What the hell? Is there evidence of this? Horrendous

etmoiandme · 11/12/2023 01:07

@Trulywonderful Gosh was just reading about that too! I actually swithered whether to post it because I know some Jewish mums on here send their kids to Jewish schools and didn't want to cause alarm.

But the "evidence please" people could do with seeing these kind of reports.

Trulywonderful · 11/12/2023 01:16

Let be honest some of the evidence please people will just say don't post that because it will overshadow or they will say it was allegedly sent because the police are still investigating it.

Makes you want to bang your head against a wall at some of the comments made. It really does take a lot of twists to arrive where some people have.

I'm so glad those young women have been arrested.
Re Liz Magill, a couple of days ago footage appeared of her and two other women, also heads of USA universities, testifying to Senate.
I would link, but am still brain fogged with flu.
It was fascinating to watch , as each of them were asked about antisemitism at their universities. Each gave cautiously-worded, legalistic, answers. Which was a mistake. And Liz Magill has said as much, and apologised.
The problem is that, on any other issue, say misgendering or racism, these same universities would not hesitate to condemn it.
I hope all 3 women are sacked.

Humdingerydoo · 11/12/2023 08:00

I don't think the evidence please people are on this thread. They don't seem to have much interest in preventing the rise of antisemitism.

It is quite a difficult issue for those of us who believe in free speech as I do as I would like campuses to be full of all kinds of different views even if other students detest those views on issues from is there a God to trans issues, who is female etc etc. So I have no problem with a student supporting Israel or taking a different view. It is where we draw the line that is hard. Universities have tended to have far far too much censorship and safe spaces etc in my view on masses of issues. However as soon as people call for death of others we perhaps should dra the line but even there not always - context matters eg some on campus would call anyone supporting abortion or even rights of nations to declare war are calling for death. It is a can of worms. (I have not watched the ladies from the universities being interviewed however so do not know how their answers came over).

Penn seems to be up to its in its neck in it

Anne Norton, distinguished Professor of Political Science:

- liked a post that stated "Playing the victim is what Jews are best at"
- shared a post calling the brutal rape of Jewish woman "alleged"
- commented how good the Hamas hostages had it

Sausagenbacon · 11/12/2023 19:53

You would think that supposedly intelligent people could behave a little more intelligently.
The bottom line seems to be sponsors withdrawing funding.

Walkaround · 12/12/2023 08:24

I think the problem is, there is a feeling of free speech being shut down - not just to control extremists, but to silence perfectly legitimate concerns. Antisemitism is not reduced by banning marches or sacking academics, as that just feeds all the worst anti-semitic conspiracy theories and attracts the very people you want to discourage, until all moderate voices are drowned out.

etmoiandme · 12/12/2023 08:51

Antisemitism is not reduced by allowing influential academics to go unchecked and essentially giving them free reign to spread racism and harmful tropes among their impressionable students. There has to be some kind of consequence.
