Well, it's difficult for me to say because this is my first month trying them too, but I got myself thoroughly worked up when I had used up almost the entire pack and hadn't got a positive, so I promised myself I would just relax and let it happen if it happened. But then on CD 20 I had an urge to do another one and to my absolute surprise it was a resounding positive....I guess I must just have a long cycle.

From what I have read they are really hit and miss depending on what time of day you do them. I had heard that first thing in the morning was a really bad time, but that's when I got my positive so who knows.

If we haven't managed it this cycle I am really not sure I would use them again. As you said it just makes you even more stressed! Besides, they only indicate when ovulation is just about to happen, considering the length of time it can take the sperm to reach their target vs the length of time the egg has before it begins to deteriorate I guess the jury is out on how useful they actually are...

Still it's always nice to see something give a positive result, just as practice for that BFP

cangaroo · 04/07/2009 22:55

Hi Beanmum

I empathise both with the TTC stress and the having to write a paper when everyone else is out drinking pimms!

I haven't tried using ovulation sticks, partly because I know that once I start I am going to get obsessed, alnd also because I am a bit confused about the whole timing thing. I have read on the NHS site that sperm take time to get to the egg (can't remember how long) and the best chance of conceiving is in the week before ovulation. So am finding the whole thing a wee bit confusing.

cangaroo · 04/07/2009 22:56

sorry poppyjen, crossed post!

Poppyjen · 04/07/2009 22:58

No worries

Beanmum · 04/07/2009 23:17

poppyjen that's interesting about early morning wee - didn't know that, and that's when I've been trying. Interesting that you got a +ve later than expected too. I have a short cycle and would've expected to have ov'd by now, but I guess we'll just keep on doing the do as often as energy levels permit and keep fingers crossed!

cangaroo yep, the timing confuses me too. My understanding is that the two days before ov and the day itself are the most fertile, and since sperm can live for a couple of days (some places say 5 days, but apparently this is optimistic!), the 5 or 6 days pre- and including ov are the fertile window. But it's possible to try to rationalise these things too much - who knows why it happens some times and not others? I got pg really early on in my cycle last time...

Hm, paper hasn't progressed much

sweetkitty · 04/07/2009 23:39

Evening ladies

On the cycle thing, I have a 27 day cycle and ov day 15 (or well I did) so ov later than I thought.

Here's my BFP story:
DD1 - BD once that month (was working away a lot) CD11 thought it was too early
DD2 - BD once that month (DH left to return to Scotland, DD2 leaving present) CD17 thought it was too late
DB3 - BD CD10, 12 and 14
DD3 - BD CD10 and 12 thought I had missed window

and how sad am I for remembering all this having all girls it must be the strong ones that survive lol

as for symptoms I get none whatsoever, doesn't stop me inventing some though, takes about 6 weeks for me to start feeling sick.

Poppyjen · 05/07/2009 15:23

Hi happy Sunday afternoon!

Just a quick question to you ladies out there - I am totally confused about cervical position - for some reason when it comes to monitoring my cycle I just can't tell high from low!

Is it high or low when it's difficult to reach on internal exam?

Sorry, fairly gross I know but I am hoping that you guys will understand - I'm doing all the monitoring I can to try to figure out what's normal

Thanks!

sweetkitty · 05/07/2009 21:50

Sorry poppyjen have never done the cervix thing, I usually just go on EWCM and OPKs

Poppyjen · 05/07/2009 22:16

It is a bit of a puzzle, who'd have thought I could know so little about my own body

I'm feeling a little crampy right now what an emotional rollercoaster this TTC lark is! AF? Hope not.

Sorry, I'm feeling whiney and down tonight for some reason, hope I am back to my normal positive self tomorrow...

tostaky · 06/07/2009 09:25

aaargh!!! I had a very busy three days weekend with friends over and their two DS (3 and 6), my DH with one hand injured (so couldnt help with a lot) and the bloody dishwasher broke on saturday!!!!
with that, no time to think about TTC, let alone any energy to BD and i have just realise that i am probably at the end of my fertile window... better BD twice tonight!

hello all I'd love to hop on the bus please!! But i'm rubbish with acronyms and also knowing my cycle so it's all a bit vague - sorry!! Not very good at the sciencey bit since my DD1 was conceived v quickly (we were going for a honeymoon baby but as the wedding dress didn't QUITE fit as well as it had the week before.....realised I'd have to NOT quaff quite as much champagne as i'd planned!!)
Right. So.

Damn, it's Monday. How did that happen? Hope everyone has had lovely weekends in the sunshine.

I was wondering whether my cycle length is a scary thing at the moment. I'm using the Persona as a fertility monitor (opk sticks = way too complicated, little machine with lights = simple) and I'm ovulating somewhere around day 14 of my cycle, but then I'm spotting from around day 20 before period starts proper on day 26. Anyone have any idea if I need to go and badger a GP about this yet? Or will they just tell me I'm being neurotic? In fact, AM I just being neurotic...?

I am feeling a little wierd about this cycle as my af arrived exactly two years after my last m/c after which I concieved my ds. So if I got pg this month it would mean having the same due date (plus two years) as my ds2! Still I would take that at the moment as having had 3 miscarriages since he was born I am just hoping to get pg no matter when.

sweetkitty · 06/07/2009 20:42

CD9 already wow how did that happen, better start talking nicer to DH and get on down Boots for some OPKs I want to see where my cycle is as this is my first one post DD3

rainbowdays - welcome and so sorry about the mc, hard isn't it

Shopna · 06/07/2009 21:44

Hi Everyone! I've had to ditch the March bus in favour of your company. I'm hoping for a BFP for April 2010. My daughter, now 3, was born in April 2006 so I'm hoping April is lucky for me again. You do hear stories about siblings being born in the same month / day so here's hoping! Wedding anniversary this month too so hopefully that will be lucky for us too!!

Poppyjen · 07/07/2009 21:19

Ok guys - this is not a drill.....

I was feeling a bit weird today and so gave in and took a First Response HPT this evening and it came back with a faint but definitely line-like positive....

EEEEEK!!!

I won't get off the bus just yet though, I am feeling a bit cautious at this stage and will test again tomorrow and a couple of days later to be sure....

Beanmum · 07/07/2009 22:19

Yay! Congratulations poppyjen, that's brilliant!
