Long time lurker. Even longer Christmas lover. Here's my tree from last year. Please share photos and spread the joy of the season. I will never apologise for being a Christmas addict.

@IAm16StoneHalloween2024 Lametta is separate little silvers of tinsel, very vintage. We have it every year. This is our main living room tree. Warm white lights, and mostly vintage baubles. The fairy at the top was my grandmothers. DS calls it the creepy little doll 😂

i know it’s a tree thread but I also do my door and entranceway too and love sharing Xmas stuff 🙈 I’ve got thicker garland this year to make the doorway look better

Wow 😍I’m obsessed with this. Did you made it? Well done you!!

IAm16StoneHalloween2024 · 05/11/2024 21:45

@Pottedshrimpy I just watched a video on how it’s put on. So when you take it off, you just have to throw it away? Or it keeps for another year? I’ve not seen it on anyone’s tree ever (child of the 70s and 80s so I’m not sure how it’s passed me by).

It looks so pretty on your tree, really vintage looking.

Pottedshrimpy · 05/11/2024 21:48

I pull it off the tree and store it in a box for the year after. I buy a top up every couple of years. It’s lovely so sparkly and subtle. My aunt had it on her tree when I was little and I thought it was the height of sophistication 😂

Has lametta moved on?

I remember my nan having these very fine gold strips. But it seems now you can get gold, silver, rainbow metallic and pearly iridescent.

Which ones give the best effect?

Saz12 · 05/11/2024 23:59

I use silver @Lepetitmaman. Gold is softer, but my multicolour lights are a bit harsher coloured than the beautiful soft incandescent ones!

gemdrop84 · 06/11/2024 08:05

What beautiful trees, ooo I can't wait for December to get ours up. Here's ours 😊

I’ve just googled lametta but need to know more. It looks like fine silver threads??? Are they attached to each other or are they all separate? How do you put it on the tree?

Edited

Lamette is very fine silver strands and you put them a strand or two on the end of the branches-it kind of makes the whole tree sparkly. They come attached at one end and you pull them off to use.

There was the temptation as a child for my dsis and I to covertly throw hand fulls on the branches but I am a grown up now and do it more carefully.

LePetitMaman · 05/11/2024 18:51

When you say zillions of lights... Are these one huge set of cluster lights? Or multiple sets of standard ones please?

The lady that dresses the trees (which are spectacular) in our local garden centre told me to wind up and down each individual branch, which does look loads better... But still nowhere near as lit as yours, is there a technique you use?

@LePetitMaman I use lots of strands-maybe 10-12 ish and some very long ones. Literally 1000s. I have a big extension thing at the back with lots of places to plug in and start all of them at the back to hide the cords. Then the tree skirt hides the plugs on the floor.

I do wind around each individual branch and also around the trunk in places. I go the whole way in to the trunk with the lights wrapped around the branches-especially in the front middle. Use the longer strands of lights as I go down as much easier and the top so faffy the shorter ones easier.

I start at the top and get up on a ladder and go round-fiddly at the top as I do part then have to move ladder to other side to carry on. I go around-sort of think of it as layers as I go-always around though-not up and down.

When you take them off you reverse the process and start at the bottom.

Look forward to seeing your masterpiece!!

IAm16StoneHalloween2024 · 06/11/2024 09:48

@MrsMitford3 What do you think? Silver? Gold? Coloured? I’m tempted to go for silver as I prefer silver jewellery to gold, but this might not be the best approach?!

My tree will have no theme if that makes a difference.

My tree also has no theme-a wonderful collection of ornaments starting from my childhood on up to now. The "angel" on top made by my now 28yo DS when he was in nursery.

I use silver lametta. It reflects the lights so beautifully.

IAm16StoneHalloween2024 · 06/11/2024 10:12

@MrsMitford3 silver it is then!

MenorahCandles · 06/11/2024 11:14

@MrsMitford3 can I ask how long it takes you? It definitely looks worth it, your tree is beautiful.

I never realised people have more than one Christmas tree in their house - is this a recent thing? I don't think I know any of my friends who celebrate Christmas who have more than one, although some decorate their DCs rooms with lights etc. I don't think I remember it from childhood friends either. It always seemed to be one tree downstairs, and no decorations upstairs.

The big tree is from two years ago the other tree from last year as we were actually away over Christmas so went smaller (so 5ft rather than over 7ft).
I'll be getting this years up first week of December.

Obsessed with that big tree, absolutely gorgeous

Yes my now adult children always had their own small tree, they placed their school decorations and selected ones on their tree and could touch it as much as they wanted or reorganise it.

Absolutely loving seeing everyone's beautiful trees!
Can't wait to get mine up now! Here's a pic from last year, it's a miss-match and lots of vintage decs I've collected over the years. Probably giving 80s/quality street vibes,

This feels like a very cosy thread. I don't know why but the thought of multiple trees in a house, especially for DC, is lovely! Do people here put lights/decorate outside, or is there a dedicated thread for that Grin There are always lots of multi coloured flashing lights on our road, I wonder if this year will be less due to cost, if they run them from the mains?

BookyGilly · 06/11/2024 19:50

@gemdrop84 That's a beautiful tree. 🎄

@UpOnTheHousetop Fab tree. Like mine, it's not done by a committee or reflecting a theme. It's totally joyous, being happy when family baubles are put on it and remembering lovely memories. It's a mishmash of toilet roll Santa's and Harrod's baubles. But every bauble is cherished. 🎄
