Our tree lights are on a timer so they go off overnight, but it really annoys me that the first 6?7?8? settings on the lights are various kinds of flashing/blinking. So when we come downstairs in the morning, there's a headache-inducing disco thing going on in the living room unless one of us crawls under the tree to press the button repeatedly until we get the static lights.

Why can't manufacturers make it so the default setting is static, then you can press the button to do all the fancy stuff if you want it? Or, in fact, how about tree lights whose only two settings are ON and OFF?

Yes! Lights that are just ON, please! (Unless I switch them off.)

I’ve enjoyed this thread so much. It’s inspired me to, well, festoon is the only word my own house with fairy lights despite obviously not having a tree etc. I even have something called a “light curtain” I really hope they aren’t like a gateway drug and next year I am shiftily buying trees for each room in my house!

PS I can confirm the number of times you need to repeatedly press the button to stop the horrendous stupid flashing is 8. I have learnt my lesson, and lights with remote control buttons are the way forward now I’m fully indoctrinated Happy Christmas/Hanukkah/solstice - whatever anyone is celebrating. Thank you everyone for sharing your trees etc.
