I know this is Mumsnet but I'm astounded at the amount of money people are spending on their dc's. Is this really the norm nowadays?

I can't believe people are getting their kids so much for Christmas!

My stockings to my kids consisted of fruit and chocolate coins.

And mostly secondhand presents which I tried to buy in their original boxes.

I found most of the things they wanted were fad stuff they didn't care for after 2 weeks. Total waste of money.

Good for you, but I only have one teen and I earn a City law firm salary so why shouldn't I get her what she wants for Christmas even if it's "just a fad" 🤷‍♀️

Beingacatbed · 16/11/2023 17:47

Thanks for sharing your lists. Lots of ideas for me as my 13 yr old doesn’t have any ideas at the moment.

So much for people not having a lot of money! I've never had surplus money (never will now) to spend like that! Luckily, my family members (3 teens, 6 adults, 2 young kids and a baby) have never been materialistic. They don't ask for anything, they are happy with whatever they get

Vinniepolis · 16/11/2023 18:18

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 16/11/2023 15:47

@Vinniepolis - "Coloured cork-type noticeboard for her room" can you share what you got please?! My DD would love something like that.

Hi, it was from Etsy - the seller is called ‘coloured cork boards’. Lots of colours, 10% off and free delivery.

PokeyLaFarge · 16/11/2023 18:19

Ha!
The competitive no spend gift givers are out in force, I see!

On MN, you MUST get your dc's gifts out of a skip, ideally found under a dead fox
🤣🤣

Most people I know plan and budget for Christmas to give their kids/loved ones nice things
🤷‍♀️

It's not a weird thing to do, honestly

aModernClassic · 16/11/2023 18:42

My 14DD is getting.

  • England away shirt with player name on number on the back
  • Sheet Face masks
  • Dior bracelets
  • Chocolate orange

Plus I brought a Elle beauty advent calendar as you get a monthly subscription to the magazine too

DonPeggyJoan · 16/11/2023 18:45

What are the bubble tea kits please? I have some nieces who I think would like the sound of that! What's a decent set to get?

I've got my 12 yr old Neice a costa mug with a full size tin of costa hot chocolate as she loves hot chocolate and she'll feel very grown up having her own costa ones! 😆 they are £12 for the gift set in costa shops.

Whodhaveem · 16/11/2023 16:07

I did ask for people to refrain from making judgement on what people are spending, it’s the same chippy comments every year.

Everyone has their own budgets and reasons for how much they buy their children I don’t know why people can’t just respect that

And to say there is no suggestions for a smaller gift on this thread is just nonsense, there are lots of wonderful girls gift ideas from £5 stocking fillers all the way up.

And even if there is no suggestion for cheap presents go and make your own thread!! Jesus its the same crap every year from people judging how people spend hard earned money, good for you for buying second hand i wouldn’t dream of buying second hand for my children at christmas but i don’t judge people who do, each to your own and all that. Thanks for this thread got some good ideas for my overly spoilt children who will be bored with the "tat" in 2 weeks Hmm

Costa gift card

Retrievemysanity · 16/11/2023 20:05

@DonPeggyJoan i have got DD a bubble tea kit from Amazon previously and she loved it. It’s her birthday soon and a friend has got her one from Asda. She likes the popping bubble ones.

I have DD 15 (SEN) and DD nearly 13. I’ve got them tickets to the Strictly Come Dancing tour. Other than that, so far I have books for the youngest as she’s a bookworm and a bubble tea squishy. Eldest DD has just got into Guardians of the Galaxy so got her a Lego Groot. Good thread for inspiration OP, thank you.

I ordered so many things from people’s lists already- love this thread 😁

Wanttobeok · 16/11/2023 22:27

I wasn't being judgey! Apologies if it came across that way. If anything I'm a little jealous of what others can afford.
I LOVE buying presents and would happily spend a fortune at Christmas if I could. I say go for it!

I'm on here looking for inspiration for my nieces and so far have a few things to look at so thank you all for sharing your lists

CandyLeBonBon · 16/11/2023 22:36

Plscemarking but feeling v inadequate lol!

hby9628 · 16/11/2023 22:38

@thaegumathteth can you recommend a bead spinner? I've not heard of them before but having looked at them I think my DD might like this. She loves making bracelets out of the clay bead sets on Amazon & I've been after something crafty for her at Xmas so this might fit the bill.

Borris · 16/11/2023 22:59
