DD (12)

Apple pen
Hair straighteners
New phone (this will be my old IPhone - she’ll be over the moon, as wanted mine for ages)
A couple of books from the Heartstopper series

Not sure what else to get yet

An iPad AND an Apple Pen? Holy cheese balls! Thats about £500 isn't it?!

I know this is Mumsnet but I'm astounded at the amount of money people are spending on their dc's. Is this really the norm nowadays?

To be honest, I think some people are fibbing or exaggerating a little for the attention. No well-adjusted adult spends £500/£600 on pre-teens.

PabloandGustheGreySquirrels · 18/11/2023 13:56

TheGirlWhoLived · 16/11/2023 13:54

@Cloudhopping I go all in at Christmas ☺️ I enjoy it, love getting the kids new stuff and they appreciate it. Grandparents throw money at us so we’ll spread some tree presents out between us too rather than getting different things. Probably £6-700 per child this year?

🤣🤣🤣 You wish!!

Wanttobeok · 18/11/2023 13:59

I'd spend £500 odd quid on my son at Christmas if I could afford it...why not? Maybe not every year but for example mine currently wants a gaming PC. No way we will ever be able to afford one but it would be worth it to see his face.

So I don't think people are exaggerating or making stuff up. Any more than the ones who have admitted they don't spend much or buy 2nd hand

I do 🤷‍♀️ but I only have 1

Froppysue · 18/11/2023 14:34

Loving all these idea here but still stuck for mine!
Never been so late buying things before.

Word of warning from white fox (and other places buying overseas) make sure your order is less that £135 or you can be charged import duty and taxes. I was caught out last year, should have split my order into 2.

ok so far:

dd 16 (almost 17)
bought:
Ada sweatshirt
des vu hoody
paulie skin set
filter tan set
new balance trainers
ideas:
Possibly a projector for room, she’s been wanting a standing mirror but don’t know if that’s weird to get for Xmas. Maybe some make up, stuck for anything else.

dd14 (almost 15) ND
bought:
Omori figure set
Connect 4
ideas:
doc martens, manga, clothes, nendoroid, cosplay stuff, loops, fidgets - she’s not too hard to buy for

dd21
tazman uggs (can’t find anywhere though) Lego big wave, flowerbomb perfume.
her partner: hoody, Lego set & spicebomb aftershave.

Stockings are my favourite part, usually sweets, chocs, body sprays, make up, good undies, fun stuff, jewellery etc.

I was thinking of taking things back a bit to when they were younger and get things we can ‘play’ with on Boxing Day. Going to get a few board games, Lego, diy kits, paper for lucky stars etc. need to get a move on though, no motivation this year!

Anyone want to take my bank card and sort this out for me ? 😂

tigerbear · 18/11/2023 15:30

@PabloandGustheGreySquirrels the Apple pen will be from grandparents. Tbh, I have no idea how much iPads are these days, but if it’s £££, I’m happy to get her a second hand one.

PuttingDownRoots · 18/11/2023 16:57

Our budget doesn't stretch to Apple products... but honestly I don't see the harm in spending that amount on high quality products which will get a lot if use and last for years.

You should go onto the beauty advent calendar thread where grown women are buying themselves numerous advent calendars for hundreds of £. I would rather threat my teen than buy myself an advent calendar for £350 (or three 😳).

I will have spent about £550 each on 2 older teens & 1 preteen by the time I'm finished shopping. I do start shopping early though, I started in the summer so it is easy to overspend 🙈
I'm embarrassed to share my list after reading this comment though.

Is White Fox the brand of the moment or something? My DD nearly 10 has asked for a hoodie, I’ve never heard of them and assumed it was some random brand she’d stumbled on.

Loving this list for inspiration!!

Yes White Fox Boutique is all over Tiktok!

That should say "treat" - not "threaten" btw 😂 couldn't edit anymore

Before DD was a teenage I would tend to agree with you but now.
Trainers £120
Nail lamp £100
Lego flowers £50
Pandora charm £50+

That's 4 things that I have bought DD and I'm already at £320.

I think it’s quite easy to spend £500 especially if they want/need an expensive piece of tech (iPad, iPhone etc..). I have spent around £200 each and they only have 5 gifts plus stocking gifts. Sadly you don’t get much for your money.

Rubyshoosday · 18/11/2023 19:18

I've enjoyed reading these lists - thanks OP.

TheGirlWhoLived · 18/11/2023 19:28

@PabloandGustheGreySquirrels if you would like I can send you a quick picture before I wrap it? But what I actually wish for is my child wasn’t born blind and deaf in one side so if I want to spend £700 on her at Christmas I bloody well will

TheGirlWhoLived · 18/11/2023 19:30

I haven’t spent £600 on the 3 year old if that’s what you were thinking? He’s 3. But we are going to Disney next year if you want something to get antsy over!

IndecentFeminist · 18/11/2023 22:56

It’s pretty easy to spend £600 odd on a teenager. We don’t, but I can see how it happens pretty easily. My teenager is the size on an adult, she’s in adult sized clothes and shoes so even a tracksuit and trainers could be £150 easily. Luckily the sport she is into isn’t massively expensive to buy for, but some are.

1stTimeMama · 18/11/2023 23:50

I haven't started for my teen yet, and she's being oddly resistant to sending me a list! I've loved reading this thread though, and have got soooo many ideas.
I don't know how people don't spend £££'s on older children, mine loves Lego, and just one of the sets I know she'd love is over £400, the other around £340. And that's just one present!

hby9628 · 19/11/2023 09:02

I've had a message from white fox to say their black fri sale starts at 8am tomorrow and will last 4 hours.

yodaforpresident · 19/11/2023 11:02

Fab thread - I'm always looking for stocking ideas ( I had not heard of laneige or sol de janeiro) as DD is rather reticent. Main items are a Roland electronic drum kit set and a Dinny Hall necklace so far. For those into Japanese items, I would recommend the Buildiverse nano lego.

XelaM · 19/11/2023 13:25

My 13-year-old mentioned at some point that the 90’s fashion is back and asked whether I had any 90’s clothes left 😂 (I don’t but also I wasn’t particularly fashionable even in the 90’s). Does anyone much wiser and more fashion-conscious know what type of 90’s clothes are back in? Is there a way to get her some kind of gift card for Vinted or a vintage shop on London (any recommendations welcome)?

TheGirlWhoLived · 19/11/2023 13:52

I think it’s more the bomber jackets, ripped baggy jeans, tight cropped t shirts. Not entirely sure though, I was definitely rocking my poppers and pedal pushers and I can’t see any of those round and about!
Most of the new 90s fashion is in places like Zara and h and m, but honestly I would just give cash, or a note saying ‘valid for one outfit (top, jeans, jacket whatever) on a shopping trip’.
You never know which stores are going to go bump and sometimes having a good mooch round charity shops, vinted or markets is better!

PinkyU · 19/11/2023 16:37

For anyone after bubble skin care they have 20% off everything in store currently.
