So what supermarket substitutions have you had in your xmas shop? I was expecting a couple, but most were like for like...

This is the most annoying one:

Sainsbury's Milk Chocolate Yule Log, Taste the Difference 442g,
substituted with

  • Sainsbury's Raspberry Sponge Roll, Taste the Difference 268g

Tesco finest 2.6kg Wiltshire gammon joint as sub for 0.9kg bog standard one.

Winner!

Battlecat98 · 23/12/2022 11:01

I had a few low fat/ low calorie options so,
Reduced salt/sugar baked beans - yuk
Schweppes ginger ale swapped for Tesco low calorie ginger ale and the worst for me,
Extra mature cheddar swapped for 30% reduced fat cheddar.

No big deal really as everything else was there, just need to get the ale and cheese. Can live without beans

DorothyCannoli · 23/12/2022 11:28

No awful substitutions thankfully, but have been sent no crackers (for cheese) as apparently there were no substitutions available!

helloisitmeyourelookingfor · 23/12/2022 11:38

@DorothyCannoli
I can well believe there were no substitutes for crackers

They were only ryvita and oat cakes in Asda yesterday and I wouldn't have thanked them for either of those

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 23/12/2022 11:39

13 substitutions today, but nothing too dreadful so it's all good. Most of our subs were changed for something better.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 23/12/2022 11:52

Smoked salmon pate substituted with butternut squash pate Sad

Salamander91 · 23/12/2022 11:57

Gluten free stuffing substituted with gluten free gravy 🤦‍♀️

Chateaudiaries · 23/12/2022 12:00

All my subs were replaced with better or equal alternatives except I was given a white cabbage instead of a red one! Braised white cabbage anyone Xmas Confused

Oceancreature · 23/12/2022 12:07

Orange juice substituted with apple juice, would have been ok but there is already apple juice on the order. Ready rolled gluten free pastry missing but 2 jars of mince filling is present so no idea what to do with that now I can’t make mince pies! Irish cream truffles substituted with plain dark chocolate truffles. Tomato soup substituted with tomato and basil which we don’t like, too much like pasta sauce for us. At least our Christmas dinner essentials; sprouts and the like are available. Considering just doing an in person shop next year…

SellFridges · 23/12/2022 12:12

We’ve got goose fat potatoes instead of butter basted ones. DD is veggie and although she’s fine with butter, I suspect if she sees the massive GOOSE FAT label she may squirm.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 23/12/2022 12:32

Own brand plain flour for 'posher' plain flour.

Tyrell's furrows crisps for normal flat ones.

Otherwise all delivered. Waitrose. Usually found them to be quite reliable in the past.

But I usually choose to have my shop delivered with enough time to pick up anything missed. All our meat was ordered from the butcher's; but the delivery guy mentioned the previous delivery was missing the gammon and the lady was quite put out.

Clarinet1 · 23/12/2022 12:32

It wasn’t subbed but I didn’t get my Christmas cake!

TwoRockSalmonAndAHaporthOfChips · 23/12/2022 12:36

Morrisons - a slightly smaller but just as nice cheesecake; small Christmas puds instead of a big one (but no biggie as not all of us have it anyway); and a different bag of salad. So really very minor, and I was pleased as you pay the extra for more generous subs at Morrisons.

BooksAndHooks · 23/12/2022 12:37

I only had one sun the Tesco finest brandy sauce subbed for cheaper Tesco brandy pouring cream.

IClaudine · 23/12/2022 12:41

I got a box of sweet biscuits as a sub for this🙄

Reugny · 23/12/2022 12:48

I learnt the hard way last year to get all Christmasy cakes at least two weeks before if you want it on delivery. There will be supermarkets that still have them on their shelves e.g. Sainsburys, M&S, but some of the supermarkets don't have them anymore Christmas week.

I didn't get any substitutions but oddly Asda were out of mince pies, mixers for spirits, certain crisps, random ready made bits and meat to make a casserole with. So I will be going out later to buy them plus some of the food I now need for tomorrow.

PollyEsther · 23/12/2022 12:58

Our subs were fine, but they’ve (charged us for) but not delivered cauliflower cheese or creamed cabbage. They charged but didn’t deliver our ketchup last week.

We also use Sainsbury’s and can’t fault them usually, I suspect it’s just the Christmas demand has meant things get packed in the wrong crate etc. They always refund without qualms so can’t complain too much really.

thenightsky · 23/12/2022 13:12

Tesco. I ordered two 600ml double cream and got subbed two tiny pots of Elmlea. I rejected it as it is hopeless for cooking.

jay55 · 23/12/2022 13:20

Rejected
Dark choc maltesers subbed with malteser buttons
Rhubarb tonic subbed with plain (which I have loads of)
Dundee cake subbed with iced Xmas cake (half the weight, more expensive!)
Twiglets subbed with mini cheddars.

Accepted
Sainsburys crumpets subbed for warburtons.

Was expecting much worse.

Red cabbages are bizarrely short supply this year. None in M&S, Waitrose of Sainsbury's today - DH needed to get one at great expense from boutique Clapham delicatessen - but since we're going to braise it in the coke stock from the gammon we can't make do with a ready-made version.

Friolero · 23/12/2022 13:26

Ocado - got a different cheese selection to what I'd ordered. The one they sent was 50% more expensive for the same size which is annoying but we want cheese so accepted it.

AllTheAll · 23/12/2022 13:29

No tubes of sugar cookie dough left. But the bakery had unfrosted cutout sugar cookies and pots of buttercreme frosting for purchase. So I just went even one step lazier. It's okay; I've dialed things up to hard in other aspects of xmas so this is a good reprieve.

TidyDancer · 23/12/2022 13:35

Sainsbury’s here, delivery last night. Got own brand biscuit box instead of a McVities one, largely the same so absolutely fine. Treeselets weren't available and got mini cheddars instead. Again fine. Mince pies not delivered even though charged for so they've been refunded. Generally pretty good really.

ancientgran · 23/12/2022 13:42

I was happy with mine, I got apples swapped for organic apples, small tub of double cream swapped for a big tub and a selection of cheeses swapped for a big selection of cheeses. The poor delivery man said he'd been having a nightmare with people complaining about substitutions and did I know I had 3, I said yes and happy with them all. Good old Sainsburys.

My Sainsbury's delivery guy said it's been a nightmare, lots of students working and don't seem to know anything about cooking so doing bizarre substitutions.
