A star, an angel, something random... what's atop your tree?

Just a lighthearted and not-even-slightly scientific pool because I'm curious!

I'm preparing to be flamed here but I've just ordered a disco ball for the top of my thoroughly non-traditional and possibly garish tree 😁

A silver and gold filigree star which was a free gift from Ideal Home magazine about 25 years ago. I make sure the top light shines through it.

That's assuming I have a tree this year - see also cats and Christmas tree thread.

A rather tatty fairy. She’s seen at least 30 of our Christmas’s so l’m reluctant to replace her.

One year I had a housemate living with me at the time and after decorating the Christmas tree, I realised that I had nothing to put on top of it - no star, no fairy, nothing. So, we jammed a little lion Beanie Baby on top as a bit of a joke but it stayed there for the whole Christmas period and quite a few people commented how quirky and different it was lol. Still one of my most favourite Christmases.

Shaun the sheep, munching on a piece of Xmas tree. I’ve had him 20+ years!

We have the extremely traditional Christmas Kiwi. NOT the fruit. The bird. I suspect it may have been a hair tie at some time.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 10/11/2021 09:04

I made a felted angel around 5 years ago. I had a lot of fun making her.

MissMatty2hats · 10/11/2021 09:17

We’ve had the same angel on our tree since we first got married 26 years ago, she always looks a bit wonky because she’s too heavy but it wouldn’t be Christmas without her.

However my 20 year old daughter is in charge of the tree in the kitchen, she goes with the less traditional option of Harry Styles in a princess dress.

@VittysCardigan

I have a fox wearing a santa hat & a scarf
Sturdy tree then!
Vickles20 · 10/11/2021 09:21

Primark do a soft plush like gold star. Got it the other day. Love it

SpookyPumpkinPants · 10/11/2021 09:24

I now have the fairy that was always on our Christmas tree growing up, in between I had an angel from a country I spent many years living in. She goes near the top & doesn't begrudge 'traditional fairy' the top spot.

I'll let you know when it's actually Christmas and my tree goes up Grin

Moorlander · 10/11/2021 09:40

@ApolloandDaphne snap! Our squirrel tree topper was originally to honour a very persistent squirrel who set up home in our loft that year!

And not a skinny pointy-eared Gisella Graham fairy either!

I don't think my fairy is a designer one. I showed it to my husband and he remarked that it might be a bit too large to go on top of our tree. Fair comment as she's about 30cm tall. However, because it's just a doll's torso and head on a plastic cone with a skirt over the top, she is free standing so could just be an ornament.

I'll find out when we put our tree up in late December and put my brand new fairy on top of the tree. (I wish I could find a doll similar to the fairy we ever used to have but it's really not that important.)

Iseeyoulookingatme · 10/11/2021 09:52

We have a star but now dh has left I might treat myself to a fairy. He was against me getting a fairy for the tree but he has no say now so I'm going to have to find the most expensive pretty fairy I can find.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 10/11/2021 09:53

A knitted David Bowie

Laska2Meryls · 10/11/2021 09:54

We have the loo roll tube Father Christmas complete with cotton wool beard made by my son at nursery school over 30 years ago..
Also a pair of knitted Christmas pudding baubles made by my dear departed Mum just underneath LooRollSanta

Laska2Meryls · 10/11/2021 09:56

We Have quite a collection of fairies now, .. they all hang from the ceiling in the hall.. You mustn't comment that you can possibly see up their skirts though because that would be rude!!

Laska2Meryls · 10/11/2021 09:58

And they'd get upset.. they look forward to coming our of their box and flying around the ceiling each Christmas.....

FlipFlops4Me · 10/11/2021 09:59

The angel that my mum and dad always had on top of their trees. AFter they died it was one of the very few things I wanted and it always goes on top of our tree.

showmethegin · 10/11/2021 09:59

We have Dolly Parton as the angel she is Grin

An angel in our house. But my favourite 3 decorations are a bell made from egg carton and pipe cleaner my dd made me when 4, a decorated fir cone with cotton wool and glitter on ds1 made me at 4 and a lollipop stick reindeer my niece made me at 4 also. I always place them up high at front of tree.

Runningupthecurtains · 10/11/2021 10:03

A knitted penguin just so DH can chunter on about penguins having nothing to do with Christmas. It wouldn't be the same without his annual lecture on the topic. 🐧🎄
