My Christmas is nearly ruined. They guaranteed to us they would bring all the drinks we needed and even asked what we wanted but they didn't bring enough. They arrived this evening to eat an amazing buffet and they will have the most lovely dinner tomorrow with loads of nice nibbles during the day but they couldn't be arsed to bring enough drinks. Probably there is enough wine but 4 bottles of J2O between 7 people clearly is not enough. And Dh drinks only beer, they know it and brought only 12 small bottles of corona which they are drinking too. No soft drinks for Dd at all. And the icing on the cake was when I asked MIL if I could have some coke from the half bottle they left in the kitchen and as I am pouring it BIL jokes that I am drinking HIS coke so I apologise and tell him I asked MIL to which he replies that it is not MIL's coke but his....then I realise that the only coke they brought. And no, they aren't strapped for cash. In the last few days they went to a posh restaurant, went to see a show on the West End and to the cinema. Also MIL cant stop bragging about her pay rise. I am annoyed.

Why dont you ask them to go out buy more drinks? Tell the you provide food for two days and they have barely provided drinks for one meal, so get out there and find more beer and coke and whatever you want.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 25/12/2013 13:10

Or,even better idea,THANK THEM FOR BRINGING DRINKS.

You know, like people normally do at Christmas. If you want more go and get some yourself.Don't expect.

Upcycled · 25/12/2013 13:12

I gave them hints but they didn't get it.
They are not my family for me to ask them to go 5 minutes down the road to get stuff.
In my own family I would not have this problem.

I am over it now.
Dh can go get his beer or ask someone to go for him.
Dd have her juice now.
I will drink tap water.

But next year things will be different.
They will have a list and they better get everything there. And it won't be much as they will come for dinner only. And FIL will need to drive back anyway.

Would be interesting to know if they are expecting ANY food triptrap since they didn't bring any????

QuintessentialShadows · 25/12/2013 13:14

I guess they did not realize that you would have nothing in, not even for your own child and that they were meant to bring everything for everybody. Maybe they thought they were just supposed to bring the drinks THEY were getting? This is why they made pointed jokes about you drinking THEIR drinks?

No qhintessentialshadows

We have being doing it for 6 years now and this was not the case before.

And even if you were right, make a joke to the host because she is drinking some of the coke is acceptable?

Well I did not find it funny.

I think triptrap actually called me a twat, see my post below hers/his.

I have been called worse. You must do better than that if you are supposed to rile me. Smile

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 25/12/2013 13:22

Not you quintessntial, you aren't being a thankless 'me me me' humbug! Merry christmas to you x

NotALondoner · 25/12/2013 13:22

Well I totally understand where you are coming from. You put a lot of effort into one thing, was told to not think about another thing as it was all under control, and it turns out it isn't under control at all. I would buy the coke and drink it in your room tbh.

Frozenatchristmas · 25/12/2013 13:27

I can see why you are annoyed. I know the bottles you mean, they are stubby sized, about 1/4 pint, if that in size so 12 bottles really is nothing.

If I were in charge of drinks there would a full case of beer, cava, wine and plenty of soft drinks. May be port and ballies depending on peoples likes.

It seems they have been pretty thoughtless.

Scarletohello · 25/12/2013 13:39

I do understand why you are upset, you have put a lot of effort and thought into the day and they haven't kept their side of the deal. Maybe don't host next year?

FWIW this is the first year ever I haven't had Xmas with my mum and dad, due to strokes and dementia they are now in care homes.

Wish the lack of coke was all I had to worry about.

Just laugh about it and enjoy the day.

It's just one day, in the bigger picture it just doesn't matter!

Xmas hugs to you. X

SirRaymondClench · 25/12/2013 14:17

This is so fucking first world it's painful!

MostWicked · 25/12/2013 14:29

A little annoying - yes
Ruined Christmas? Well I suppose it depends what's important to you really.

Cantabile · 25/12/2013 14:36

Just give them a list of what's needed and send them out before the off licence closes. They are determined not to take the hint so don't hint.

Upcycled · 25/12/2013 14:42

So was having a chat with them and they unravel their plan of staying until 26th evening...
I say: ' excuse-me? this isn't the plan?
MIL: ' but we want to stay tomorrow too...we have nothing to do
I say: 'but Dh leaves the house to work at 7 and I have plans too. I am leaving the house at 10.
MIL: pretending is going to say something but actually says nothing and changes the subject.

Hahaha, they expect me to slave in the kitchen for them for yet another day and perhaps go and buy more drinks too.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 25/12/2013 14:49

Why the fuck do you even have them for christmas- you dont like them! Stop martyring yourself. It doesnt make you a saint for 'slaving' in the kitchen for people you think are ungrateful- it makes you a mug. If you have something to say to them then say it instead of seething and sulking.

Onemanwenttomowameado · 25/12/2013 14:50

Upcycled, please take the time to read other threads on this site, or even watch the news- there are people in this world who are really suffering today.

You are surrounded today (and tomorrow!) by people who love you. You are with your family, and eating (by your own admission) good food.

Please calm down, stop being so miserable, and enjoy the many things you have. Lack of drinks won't ruin Christmas, but your attitude might.

SirRaymondClench · 25/12/2013 14:54

What I've been reading on MN and everywhere else lately is people who don't have enough to eat at all, or who will freeze because they can't afford to put the heating on, or who will be beaten black and blue this Christmas.

And there there's you - whining like a bitch because you don't have any coke to drink, but too childish and petulant to go buy yourself some, even though you can.

Grow the fuck up Op.

Upcycled · 25/12/2013 14:57

Who knows they love me? A part from Dh and Dd?
I have them for Christmas because I have no choice. My own family is miles away in other country. Dh is eager to please and won't spend christmas whit out them.
Dd is their only grandchild and only niece to BIL and SIL.
They have nothing more interesting to do.
I can't go watch the news because they monopolise the TV.
They don't help in the kitchen at all. AT ALL.

Yesterday i was doing piles of washing up after the banquette we served and MIL had the audacity to ask me to stop and get her some beer. Everybody else was doing fuck all. (obviously I ignored and she made somebody else get it.)

OP posts:
ForTheLoveOfSocks · 25/12/2013 15:03

FGS, so because it's Christmas the OP can't moan?

Suffering happens for the other 364 days a year, but most people on here don't beat people over the head with it.

OP Id be pissed off too. I don't blame you for your reaction.

CloserLook · 25/12/2013 15:06

OP I completely understand how cross you feel. It's obviously more about the rudeness from people you are welcoming into your home than the actual lack of drink. You had an agreement with them that they've stuck to previous years that you do the food and they do all the drink (rather than just bringing a few bottles). They could have just warned you of the change of plans and I'm sure you would have just shrugged it off and got in some drink without a fuss. Also they have presumably realised their mistake by now but still not offered to go to get any extra.

Please don't let them spoil any of your Christmas by trying to understand why they've decided to do it differently this year. And don't martyr yourself - go and get some coke. Go down the shop and come back with loads of drink then plonk it down in the kitchen with a relieved sigh and announce loudly that there is now plenty of drink for everyone. Xmas Grin

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 25/12/2013 15:06

Of course you have a choice fgs! Stop playing the martyr. If you dont want to do it say NO! If you want coke BUY COKE! If you dont want to cook DONT COOK! Tell them its their turn to cook next year if they want to eat with you. Tell them you're only happy to take turns from now on. Do whatever you like but stop making out like you have no choice.

Upcycled · 25/12/2013 15:11

They don't have room to host. And whenever we go to theirs, Dh ends up cooking anyway. So I would rather be in my own home and on my own bed.
