She will be in a position to complain Victorian, as it will be her child and her pronunciation that counts!

What about Masonette as a middle name for your lump/bean if it is a girl? lol

Well, no. Because people will read it as it is spelt, she is aware of that and has chosen to spel it wrongly so it will be on her own head.

Makingdo...I am german, and even I realise that Isla is pronounced Eye-la....because as hatrick says it's the same as Island and Isle....it just makes sense in the english language (not many things ever make sense in this language, but that one does....)....however, if I say Ayla, honest to god I would not think it is pronounced Eye-la....sorry....it just doesn't make sense at all....

VictorianSqualor · 19/04/2008 17:16

Well, we'll see you in AIBU in a few months then

BubbaAndBump · 19/04/2008 17:16

I'm still laughing on my own at my brilliant Masonette idea - simple things and all that

As a teacher, I always ask kids how they say their name before just assuming I know (if it's not a conventional name) - sometimes make a phonetic-ish note of it in my register if I don't think I'll remember it, but always call them by the name they're supposed to be known as ~ quite easy really.

msappropriate · 19/04/2008 17:16

well not quite as Isla is a name that is more common whereas Ayla isn't so more people will know it instantly. (also its the same start as the word island) But then again maybe people who don't know what alias means may have trouble with it!

so, you will be happy to repeatedly explain to people that it is pronounced Eyela even though it should be pronounced different, really?

admittedly, it never actually bothers me that people get my sons names wrong and some call Sven seven and Yannic Yannice, lol....but it doesn't happen very often anyway...if people know their phonics they usually will be o.k., and tbh, even if your child has a name like ds 3 , who is Flynn, they may well still get it wrong...because Flynn has many times been referred to as Finn or eve=n Finlay, lol

thing is, she will receive many cards with her name spelled wrong, because people will just think it's spelled Isla, lol...
but again, you cna have the smae problems with common names...Clare forinstance being one of them....have a niece of that name, and I still can never remember if it's Clare, Clair or Claire, lol

kaballie · 19/04/2008 17:22

On the Isla/Ayla note my DD is 11 months and is called Ila (Pronounced Aye-la) and noone has ever mispronnounced it...Yet. Apart from the chap who called her Ill-er and then was very embarrassed!

Ila is the Indian Sanskrit way of spelling it and it means earth or water.

kaballie · 19/04/2008 17:24

Oh, and everyone spells it Isla but so what.

I meant Ila is pronounced Eye-la, not Aye-la.
Sorry I am an idiot, and noone probably cares anyway.
