kaballie, a thought just came into my head...might not be at all on the right track...but would Ila, not possibly then pronounced EEla...if it is indian?

Must admit, we made our life very hard, because we wanted our childrens first names to be names that would be pronounced exactly the same in english and german....and bubba...yes....german is so much easier, with it being a phonetic language....much more straightforward, lol!

kaballie · 19/04/2008 22:39

You can say it EE-lah or ye-lahy or eye-la which is the closest approximation in English.

I'm goin to bed and I hope this thread is too!

3andnomore · 19/04/2008 22:43

oh right...like I said....I don't know the indian language...the thought just came into my head....iykwim...I wasn't being nasty....

I have a real hate thing though....in germany a lot of english names are in fashion....which is o.k. if they are phonetic names like Marvin, forinstance, or if they are english/german names anyway....but the amount of Noelles (which presumably are actually meant to be Noels and Leenus, which would be, erm, Linus ....that I just think is stupid, really....I want to tell those people to inform themselfs of the correct pronounciation....but hohum...they will be alright if they stay in Germany...they will never know....

just rememebr a post, from not that far back really, where someone could not understand why people mispronounce the Irene....and the person thinking that Eye-ree-nee was the correct pronounciation, whereas most people thought it was Eye-reen....(me including)....just a random thought that jumped into my head, there...should stay of the wine, I think.....

Twominutes · 19/04/2008 22:50

I'm going to say what you're al dying to say.

Isla is classic and a little quirky. It's a fashionable choice right now though.

Ayla is chav.

Flame me, blast me, call me déclassé !!! I can live with it.

VictorianSqualor · 20/04/2008 11:46

ROFFLE.

MrsMattie · 20/04/2008 12:25

Elias = lovely. Alias = not a real name.

I cant' stand the name Isla / Ayla however it's spelled.

pinkyminky · 20/04/2008 22:46

I think Irene is usually the spelling with the e sound at the end- as in Irene Handel?
I'm afraid I'm another with an affection for the correct spelling of names There is a child in my extended family with their name spelled 'creatively' and people sort of at it, it's a shame- they assume her parents can't spell. To clarify I don't mean non-uk spelling, I mean made up spelling.
