no but thats what it would look like to others. A friend adopted a child with the same (diminutive) name as her 2nd husband and people who didn't know the history always commented on it. My surname would make a great first name but I could not inflict that on a child.

I don't think it's egocentric to call your child a version of the mother's name.

After all, sons have been given the name of their fathers for centuries. Or is this alos ego centric?

Alias - is that even a name? Isn't it that some people use an Alia...or am I confusing something here, lol!

zebedee (zed for short)- To Magic Roundabout for me....and just don't like

Dominic- love, and was one of the 3 names I had on my list for ds3

Maximillian (max) (my name is maxine so its the male form) - like o.k.

I like unusual names, too...my sons are called Sven , Yannic and Flynn.
Dh liked Merlin and Orion....so, I think my ds's haven't done that bad namewise, lol!

still like Mason, too, and Miles is nice aswell, and my personal total favourite is Noah but dh wouldn't let me

Also quite like Dion

belgo · 19/04/2008 16:41

As some other posters have said, Elias is a name, but Alias isn't.

well thats the reaction it provoked with my friend and it used to upset them as a family.

belgo, either that or a lack of imagination or a desire to pass on the monogrammed silverware . I know a lot of americans that do that and some called them junior too

belgo · 19/04/2008 16:43

Mason Dominic is great.

What, Appropriate? Sounds like Alias' twin sister.

Or Appropriate Brown, Capability's lesser known brother. He specialized in designing very small restrained gardens for suburban villas. Nothing too flashy that might cause the neighbours to talk......

Bear in mind, Makingdo that Americans think Randy is a fine name too! Go for Max.

I know a lot of African children who are named after things that they like or admire or are useful (Gift, Faithful and Hammer). So Appropriate would be as good but the ms would less positive!

My fave noun name was Neon. Sadly he wasn't very bright.

BubbaAndBump · 19/04/2008 16:49

I love that people are still ranting about the choices you've given at the start Makingdo, but ignored the fact you've got to Mason! lol

btw, I went to school with a Morgan - similar style to Mason - just in case you've changed your mind again

You sure you're having a boy though?! lol

Makingdo, re alias: it is NOT a name, it is a word that means a pseudonym or assume name.

The link you provided just means there are some very daft people in the US who don't understand words. Hardly a big surprise. (There are plenty here, too!)

You just confused the name Elias with the word alias. Glad you've decided against it. Because you would have condemned your son to a life of people going 'er, what?' and thinking 'blimey, his parents must have been a bit odd'.

VictorianSqualor · 19/04/2008 16:55

Isn't 'eye-la' spelt Isla?
I'd have thought 'ayla' would be pronounced 'Ay-la'

msappropriate · 19/04/2008 16:56

isn't the pronunciation eye-la usually spelled Isla? You may get a lot of aye-la's as my friend has a simlilar problem with her sons name and everyone pronounces it aye not eye!

Well, as I said, it's your baby, your choice, but if people call her Aye-la you won't really be in a position to complain.
