What would you say is the peak mumsnet baby name? What would Ms ‘tinkly laugh/no is a full sentence’ call her PFB?

I think I’m correct in saying:

girl: Elspeth (always suggested, why?!)
boy: Jago

These days I don't dare challenge anyone's spelling in case I get told off for disrespecting their diversity or they run off sobbing to start a Mumsnet thread. A kid called Otterly would surely get nicknamed Tarka?

Haha, not the spelling, the pronunciation. At one time the rhotic police would have been all over it!

I think you'll find that @TheBirdintheCave and I were commenting on Otterly earlier, so fear not.

Don't talk to me about rhoticism - I moved to Bristol.

There is always someone suggesting Claudia! And Lydia. I don't get it.

Isn't Jago the parrot from Aladdin?

Iago wasn’t it?

Iago wasn’t it?

Yes, Iago. It’s an Othello reference.

KirstenBlest · 31/12/2022 12:14

Romilly and Seraphina are suggested on lots of threads but aren't much used IRL.
Outdated Welsh, Irish and Italian names get suggested, usually on 'sibling for ' threads.
A thread asking for little used names will get suggestions for Theo or Noah or Ava or Freya

danascully96 · 01/01/2023 01:57

James and Anna!

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 01/01/2023 10:29

Ottilie
Wren

Clara
Tabitha

Caspian

Arlo
Atticus
Kit

Glad it's not just me who is bemused not to have ever met an Ottilie in RL given its apparent popularity on here. Ditto Tabitha in my case, the only ones I've met are cats.

Talaforniababe · 01/01/2023 18:39

Anyone who calls a kid Ptolemy needs to be referred to social services.

Newyearnewfuckitatethecheese · 01/01/2023 18:42

Ha ha this thread is great. Anyone else lurking just too see if there kids name end up on here?

misslucy92 · 01/01/2023 21:34

I like Ptolemy better than some top 100 stuff (alfie Archie)

QuiltedHippo · 01/01/2023 22:03

Boys name would be something totally wet - e.g. Felix, Percy, Wilfred, Cecil

Girl would be Wren, it doesn't even sound nice and is a drab little bird but everyone goes nuts for it

Mybonnielad · 01/01/2023 22:05

Definitely Ottilie.

CharitySchmarity · 02/01/2023 17:34

Elspeth (always suggested, why?!)

I know a teenage girl whose full name is Elspeth but they call her Elsie. I suspect that in her case they wanted an Elsie but thought she might need a more serious sounding version at some point in her life. The only other two Elspeths I've met are an oldish woman who readily admits to being Elspeth and a 60-ish woman who goes by a nickname completely unrelated to her real name. None of them are Scottish as far as I can tell.

Swearwolf · 02/01/2023 17:43

Georgina for a girl, always has people saying it's beautiful. I think it's horrible!

For boys, under-used classics (otherwise known as dated 80s faves) - Peter, Steven, David, Andrew. He'll be the only one in his class!

takealettermsjones · 03/01/2023 11:02

My child's name has come up on this thread 😂 but I wasn't a MNer when I chose it!

How on earth is Ottilie pronounced Ot-teel-ya??! I admit I am common as muck and I've never met one 😂 but yes if my child had come home from school with a party invitation from Ottilie and said, "mum, how do I pronounce that?" I'd have been in the Ot-tuh-ly camp!

LovelaceBiggWither · 03/01/2023 11:17

My cats' and my kids' names are all mentioned.

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/01/2023 11:18

It's actually Oh TEE lee eh in German

The emphasis is on the second syllable

Purplemagnolias · 03/01/2023 14:08

It sounds so awful when pronounced Ottily in English 😫

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/01/2023 14:14

Even worse if they don't sound their Ts

AdaColeman · 03/01/2023 14:50

For a girl, Calliope nickname Poppy or Persephone nickname Sephie.

For a boy, Roland nickname Rollo or Lorenzo nickname Enzo.

Mumsnetters are obsessed with nicknames! Xmas Wink
