My DS name is here, I'm not in the least bit offended, we're all allowed to have different tastes and opinions...and voice them too.

ShoutOutToMyEx · 01/03/2017 23:49

*But when it comes to certain "foreign" names, there are some that get the response of "if you are going to live here, then give your child a British name/anglicise the spelling"

And these names are usually Polish names. I've noticed it time and time again. it seems unlikely that at least some of that prejudice does not spill over into RL.*

Yes, agreed. DP (E.European) and I are choosing names and I've given up telling people our ideas. A girl at work the other day actually wrinkled her nose and said 'everyone will think he's foreign!'

Er, he is. That's the whole idea...

Dixiestamp · 02/03/2017 02:51

Well it looks like DD has escaped the tirade but DS's name is a 'marmite' name...which is fine as that's his favourite food!

WhiskeySourpuss · 02/03/2017 06:35

Can't believe I got bingo! DS's name has finally made it onto the list... it's so unusual as in he's one of only 2 kids in Scotland to have been given the name in the last 16 years & the other is a girl that I've considered that the poster may know me or the other parent IRL

SaorAlbaGuBrath · 02/03/2017 06:46

So because of this so called 'privilege' that white children have, they're fair game for anyone to have a dig at? Ffs

It's not a "so called privilege", it's a fact. White, middle class children don't face the same prejudice as other races/cultures. That said, it's distasteful to mock any child. I see nobody is up in arms about the white "chav" (not my word but I can't think of a better one) children though. Funny that.

PetalMettle · 02/03/2017 06:49

Ha @meffy you only named 6 girls names and 3 of them are my sister's kids!
I never realised rafferty was Irish.
I do not like maud

crapfatbanana · 02/03/2017 06:58

All my children (including a future child if I were to have another) made the list! Result! 😄

lampfromikea · 02/03/2017 06:58

Thanks math. Not being Irish I had no idea that some of those were surnames. Particularly Tiernan, as I know an Irish couple who named their child that.

MrsMeeseeks · 02/03/2017 07:56

Here is an interesting article about black names and racism:

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/gadflyonthewallblog.wordpress.com/2015/09/06/white-people-need-to-stop-snickering-at-black-names/amp/

Joeybee · 02/03/2017 08:05

Landon.
Kaiden/Caiden...or any variant. Or Aiden or Jayden...or anything that sounds like these names!
Most names that start with K
Any name thats been given additional letters to sound more 'unique'.
Darcey
Skyler/Skylar
Place names
Surname names as first names - Beckett, Cooper etc.
Names that have been deliberately spelt differently just to sound more unique e.g: Benjaminn
Abbreviated names - OJ, AJ etc
I could go on an on...
I'm very fussy about names.

Rockaby · 02/03/2017 08:14

That article makes such a good point mrs! I've seen some disgusting posts on here directed at 'black' sounding names as well as from other cultures. Memorably, on one thread someone said a name sounded "too black". On another, a poster was goadily harping on about how much she hated Irish names and that they were "all ugly". I am not even paraphrasing. Fucked up thinking right there.

The author is right though; in fact the only children with names like Jayden, Hunter, Jaxon etc I have ever met have been white. If people think non traditional, Anglo-Saxon type names like these are totally fine, but snicker at 'black names', then I'm utterly baffled as well as disgusted.

RaeSkywalker · 02/03/2017 09:16

DS's name has been mentioned twice. Well, the nickname/ shortened version has.

So, question for those who have said that they dislike names like Ted, Kit, and Theo... if the child is actually called Edward, Christopher, or Theodore, does the name then escape your ire?

I'm genuinely curious!

RaeSkywalker · 02/03/2017 09:18

Thank you for sharing Mrs- I agree with you.

Rockaby · 02/03/2017 09:22

"Non traditional, non Anglo Saxon " that should have said sorry.

MrsMeeseeks that article was really interesting and also very true! Racism dressed up as humour is as damaging as blatant racism, if not more because it's "socially acceptable"

mydogmymate · 02/03/2017 10:06

Tyler and Tiana. Every child I've known with those names are little shits Sad

Dinocat · 02/03/2017 12:13

I don't actively dislike them, but one thing that always puzzles me about families with same letter names- how do you know who the post is for when it comes through the letterbox?!

A couple of names tho that I'm not keen on and can't really put my finger on why-

Darcy/Darcie/Darcey,
Teddy,
Flora,
Fleur,
Milo,
Archie,
Maisie

My name, DH's (although he is known by a shortened version) as well as the dog, all on here! Just waiting for DD!

Aeroflotgirl · 02/03/2017 12:31

Oh yes, OJ. and TJ, sounds blooming lazy. Kaydance, Demi Leigh, Ivy Rai, Billy Jo. Harper, Harvey, Prince, Princess, Tyson. I could go on.

Sudoname · 02/03/2017 13:09

ds name still not on here! I HATE the names Neville and Christopher. Both because they are my exes names.
