I find it very distasteful that people are making fun of predominantly white, middle class children's names.
It's really not on.

White middle class children don't face the same issues in the UK as the black or mixed raced children of immigrants.

Sigh. There's no point arguing anyway, I don't know why I'm posting.

TheTartOfAsgard · 28/02/2017 23:09

So because of this so called 'privilege' that white children have, they're fair game for anyone to have a dig at? Ffs

ShoutOutToMyEx · 28/02/2017 23:12

No, of course not. I really don't know how you've inferred that I think that, at all.

Being horrible about anyone's name is hurtful to that person and their parents, of course. But in the wider social context, it jars me far more to hear white people taking the piss out of African names for being 'ridiculous'.

Agree, but anybody taking the piss though. Also African American names and trends attract a bit of ribbing particularly, from a few ignorant people, unfortunately.

I'd take this thread with a pinch of salt any new parent searching for names!
Everyone is different hence such a wide variety of names mentioned on here. Would be boring if we all liked the same!

reuset · 01/03/2017 10:32

Too true.

MummyPenguin2 · 01/03/2017 10:36

I'm repeating names already mentioned, but I really dislike hyphenated names. They just sound so trashy to me.
Also:
Nevaeh (yes, it's heaven backwards. Well done)
Any alternative spelling- agree with jorja as mentioned previously. I recently met a Staciie (why 2 "I"s??).
Neve. I love Niamh, but can't stand the spelling Neve
Amelia- it means no arms or legs, I just can't get past that
Freya and Sebastian- too "overheard in waitrose" for me

OddShoe · 01/03/2017 10:37

Agreed user. You only have to take a look at the baby names board to see how wildly tastes vary.

My name has been mentioned couple of times. It's quite unusual, especially for someone my age. Pretty much every time I introduce myself to someone in rl I get comments about how lovely my name is.

Littlepiglittlepig3letmeIN · 01/03/2017 11:17

Shoutouttomyex,
maybe it's best if you don't read this read if it upsets you. You are taking it way too seriously.

Bingo!
Someone has finally mentioned my child's name!
How dare they!

SaorAlbaGuBrath · 01/03/2017 11:22

Aye my DDs name has just made an appearance which surprises me because it's not an unusual or phonetic name. I'm on here somewhere, one of my boys is, not the other and I'm willing to bet nobody has even thought of DPs name 😂

AYankinSpanx · 01/03/2017 11:53

Maude bleurgh

I hate Penelope as well - Lets face it who wouldn't?

Maud and Penelope were both on my name list. I absolutely love both of them Grin

MadisonAvenue · 01/03/2017 12:04

Troy is one I missed off my list.

ShoutOutToMyEx · 01/03/2017 12:07

It doesn't upset me - I'm not going to cry over it. Thank you for your concern though.

I always think it's worth considering about what seemingly throwaway comments can tell us about the messages we've internalised.

I don't think introspection is ever useless - and if I can't clearly explain and define WHY I think something, I have to wonder if I do actually think that.

As always, I'd rather be an over thinker than an under thinker.

And if someone told me something I said could be considered racist, or offensive in another way, I would do my best to consider that person's point of view and use it to inform my opinions going forward, whether I agreed or not - not scramble as fast as I could to tell that person that actually, it's not racist, they're just taking things too seriously, and really it doesn't matter because I can say whatever I want anyway.

BilboBagg1 · 01/03/2017 12:09

Names like:
Jayden
Jace
Kayden
Kade

GatoradeMeBitch · 01/03/2017 17:02

Lauren, Helen, Joanne, Doreen, Christine - I dislike those names. No idea why though.

And I won't even get started on men's names. I dislike most of them. I'm not even sure about my own ds's name tbh...

GatoradeMeBitch · 01/03/2017 17:04

But I do like Penelope! She was one of the Garden Gang - Penelope Strawberry. I also love Persephone and Peregrine. Percival...

It's lucky I'm not planning to have any more kids because the poor bugger would definitely end up with a long 'P' name Grin

TheLegendOfBeans · 01/03/2017 17:30

I like Penelope as well. If this baby turns out to be a DD I also like Persephone as a middle name, nn Percy (perhaps) Grin

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 01/03/2017 19:01

Hate unisex names.

Also Jorja (although it was suggested by DP Confused erm.......no (and if he hadn't already impregnated me he probably would have been looking for new accommodation).

Annabelle and Elizabeth always made me feel a bit ill along with anything hyphenated. I'm not a girly girl and they're just too fussy for me.

Niks2026 · 01/03/2017 21:11

I cannot stand Angus, kit, hamish, Erin, Freya, Paige, Chantelle, Charmaine, Robert, arlo, peregrine (what the bludy bell is that)
Heard someone say pip today. How is that even a real name?!?
Lucinda, river. Oh my god there's too many to list.

WetsTheFinger · 01/03/2017 21:30

Ellie.

Sounds like belly.

lampfromikea · 01/03/2017 22:53

I've never come across this (as far as I know). Out of curiosity, can you give some examples?

Annahibiscuits · 01/03/2017 22:58
